0:45 "Look at mid levels for rotation and increase the PRF" might sound like technobabble but it's factually correct. Mid-level updraft rotation in a supercell is one of the first signs of a potentially developing tornado, so it would make sense that Jo would want the radar scanning for rotation in that particular area of the storm. PRF (pulse repetition frequency) is a real Doppler radar term, it's the rate at which radar pulses are transmitted. When a supercell thunderstorm is close to the radar dish (as depicted in this scene), the radar would need to have its PRF increased in order to receive accurate wind velocity and rotation data.

Most of the tornadoes in this were actually pretty damned good. The thing that broke the suspension of disbelief was the EF-5 at the end. The actual twister was incredible. The way the protagonists dance with it at knife-fight distance isn't. As you said, they should have been dead 5 separate times they were messing around with this EF-5. And then it just... dissolves. Big tornadoes don't just "go away." They rope out, and the rope stage can actually be more powerful than the wedge stage! Tightening circulation, increasing rotation velocity. And yeah. The scene with the pipes was probably the worst scene of the entire movie. EF-5 tornadoes are not gentle with their victims. "Violently dismembered" is the norm. "Granular human remains" is not uncommon either. And this thing was *filled with debris.* Not a fun thing to be pummeled by 2x4s going 160+ mph, not to mention all those nice sharp farm implements they showed one scene earlier!

Not hardly the first or last time that Hollywood's done that - as a filmmaker once told me, they're not trying to teach physics to the audience, they're trying to tell a story, and EVERYTHING is going to be a part of that story physics or none. Bouncing tanker trucks whose explosions the protagonists casually drive right through, whole houses for the protagonists to drive through, combine harvesters weighing as much as train engines tossed hundreds of yards... EF-5s do weird things, but not THAT weird. Even the movie *Gravity,* whose director WANTED to use accurate physics, was forced to use Hollywood Physics instead when he realized 2/3rds of the dialogue were the characters giving physics lessons!

In 1996, hiding under an overpass wasn't generally known to be a bad idea. A news team famously rode out the F5 Andover KS tornado in 1991 under one (though the tornado largely missed them) and it went nationwide. For Sin 57 he says the storm chasers should know they aren't using a safe shelter (the bridge), but this movie came out in 1996, one year before the TV crew survived a tornado in Kansas by hiding under an overpass. So the characters in this movie wouldnt know that. The myth that bridges are safe during tornadoes led to overpass-related deaths during the 1999 Bridge Creek - Moore Tornado, which hit three freeway overpasses directly, killing one person at each. This is when hiding under an overpass was finally deemed not just unsafe, but the worst place to go.

a few things...I live in Texas in Tornado Alley. I've also traveled through OK and can verify that in both states, dirt roads show up everywhere. Often leading to a field or somesuch. That "delicious" corn isn't the type grown for you and me, it's grown for livestock use. As for how it can be bright and sunny with a massive (or at least a F5) tornado right up ahead...it can't. It should be pouring rain and hailing like crazy. At least that close. I have been in tornadoes, or at least watched them go by. It's never been sunny either near or next to where the tornado is. I've also watched rotation that could have touched down (which is technically still a tornado) and actually filmed it. It was dark and had just been raining with hail about 10 minutes before. When they're on the ground, you get rain, but it's sideways and hurts like hell. I still loved this movie. True story: My now ex-wife and I went to Universal Studios with friends while I was on a business trip to Florida in '07. They have a "ride" called Twister. It's a simulation of this movie in which they actually make a small, thin, not-quite-F1 tornado inside the building. As a spectator, you're in an area that's like a roofed, railed, hallway kind-of area. You stand and watch the "show". No lie, when the tornado warning horns went off and the rain came down and the hail fell, and the "tornado" formed, I found myself unconsciously baking up against the wall behind us. I then noted I was doing it and looked at my wife and she was right next to me. I also noticed a few other folks who were back up against the wall just like us. Everyone else was lined up at the rail. Afterward, when the "all clear" was sounded we all noticed each other and started to sheepishly grin at each other. One fellow looked at me and said, "Nebraska." I said "Texas". Another lady said, "Oklahoma." and we all laughed. I then said, "That was a bit too real." They agreed. If you're ever at Universal Studios theme park, check out the ride. And if you're from Tornado Alley, just skip it, cause you've already seen it for real. :-) Cheers!

Agree. I was in Texas once, and saw a black horizon in the afternoon in summer. I remember thinking (excuse my language) "F**k this" and quit for the day (I was riding motorcycles cross-country) I've seen it rain on one side of the street, dry and sunny on the other side. :)

I grew up in South Dallas (Oakcliff for y'all DFW's) and yes many tornados can break out in one day but normally the sky blackens or it takes on a purple or green color. Once in NOLA on vacation a F0 ended coming down on me and my friend within 30 seconds of getting the tornado warning while we were getting on the on ramp. I had enough time to get the warning then look at the trees blowing hard side to side and think "Shit that's tornado winds!" Boom!

I've seen the sun shining on a tornado funnel...complete with a rainbow next to it. Some tornadoes are completely "rain-wrapped" in precipitation. There is no rhyme or reason, but it does happen. Kind of depends on the time of day, as well. If the sun is at a lower angle close to sunset it can easily drop down and shine below the cloud base.
@gothgirl4evr7822 жыл бұрын
I had completely forgotten about that ride until you mentioned it, but yeah that was a pretty intense ride. I have never been in a tornado but I lived in Central Florida since I was 12 and have been in counties hurricanes so I can totally relate to what's it's like being in something as scary as a tornado or hurricane. I'm not sure which would be worse, tornadoes can be stronger with the winds but hurricanes last a lot longer so on top of wind there's flooding and storm surge

Something else that's wrong. In the beginning of the movie, the father is saying that the tornado is an F5. That was 1969. F scale was used in the early 70s. At the end, the debris would have ripped them to shreds. Also, notice how they didn't lose their shoes or that head piece she's wearing. And yes, I've watched the move so many times, I can quote it. One of my favorites.
@stevencollins78515 жыл бұрын
12:17 This was actually a good decision by the director and/or screenwriters. The most unstable atmospheric conditions are marked by intense sunshine alongside a storm. Also, tornadoes toss light objects and suck up heavier objects. This is why the sensors can't get accurate readings without Dorothy getting sucked into the funnel first. The sensors will eventually fly out of the funnel, but they will have been introduced into the center of one of the tornado's vortices by Dorothy, allowing them to get accurate measurements first.

Here's a few that you missed: 1. The opening sequence takes place in 1969. While Jo and her parents are going down the stairs of their house, her father says, "TV says it's big. Might be an F5." The Fujita Scale was not introduced until 1971 and was not adopted by the National Weather Service until the late 1970s. 2. The first tornado that they chase should not have been able to obliterate that barn the way it did. It would have had to have been an F3 at the lowest, yet it is between an F1 and an F2. 3. When Dusty told Jo that the NSSL was predicting an F5, that actually can't happen in real life. According to the NSSL's own website, they can't predict the strength of a tornado. They only assign a rating after assessing the damage and wind speed after the storm has passed. 4. When Bill and Jo are sucked up into the F5, you can see their eyes are open. Considering how high the winds were within the funnel, there's no way they would have been able to keep their eyes open, the wind would have forced them shut.

keynan martinez dude it’s a classic. This guys channel is all about picking apart movies so you can feel smarter even though you’ve never made a movie in your life nor could make one so brilliantly. Or they think it’s funny..both are pretty retarded and pathetic.

You got something wrong during the scene with Meg's wind contraptions going nuts. She mentioned the sirens going off right as she was going down her stairs. If you listen closely, you can actually hear a tornado siren just going off half a second before the movie cuts back to the drive-in theater.

No matter what, I still love this movie no matter how much sins are on here. I grew up watching this and made me have a interest in weather and meteorology when I was a kid.

You missed the scene when the father says the wether service is claiming that the tornado is an F5. The Fujita scale had not been invented yet during the time the opening sequence was fictionally set in.

Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are both dead now. They weren't old men.
@plague61745 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Phillip was born and grew up in my current area, a suburb in Rochester NY. My high school announced it on the morning announcements when he died for a moment of silence since he had also attended my school.

When they strapped themselves to the well with that belt, i was saying to myself "Bullshit, even if they were to stay strapped on, the wind speeds of dat tornado would rip them to shreds or even rip their bodies in half with dat 300 mph wind speed"
@DeoraisWhelmed8 жыл бұрын
Not only that but with the incredible aim of that tornado -_- they should have been impaled by something or blown up by another truck.
