You've Got Mail is a movie that lots of people love. I am not one of them. It's the worst. And no, it's not a Christmas movie either. But it IS a sinful movie, so we counted the sins.
Next week: Christmas sins
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

Gotta give props to the movie though, they actually generated a genuine conflict between the two leads. Most romantic comedies they fall madly in love from the get go and then manufacture some bulls**t conflict halfway through to justify them breaking up, and yada yada. Here the biggest problem is they both omit more information than you likely would in real life, but they otherwise do a decent job of showing the conflict without lazily half-assing it like nearly every romantic movie does.

Well said. I loved this movie when I was younger for some reason and still do, even though some scenes/dialogue were a bit dodgy it made up for that by having a certain charm. Just a product of its time, imo. I also liked that it didn't need to be basic/stylized with perfect angles and allegorical/consequential dialogue to be enjoyable. Not that there is anything wrong with those types of movies.

12:51 as someone who has worked in retail I can attest to this. I used to work for a small hardware chain where most of workers were on the older side and a lot the workers were retired master plumbers, electricians who could give our customers great advice. However because we were charged a little bit higher than the average Hardware store they wouldn't buy anything from our store but instead buy it from the other store. Then they would come back to our store and bitch about how they did not receive any service from the big chain store. And they wondered why our store went out of business! People are idiots sometimes.

The reason it shows the dad's girlfriend hitting on Joe is that each time he rebuffs her it puts her in a situation where she ends up spending time with the nanny. The nanny is there to go with them and the kids and he decides to just take the kids himself so she's left with the nanny. At the recital, she puts her hand on his leg so he gives up his seat and has the nanny come sit next to the girlfriend instead. So then the girlfriend ends up with the nanny because she has spent the whole movie being pushed into situations with the nanny. 🤣

After this movie came out they took solitaire off all of our computers at work! LOL! Heck who had time to play it working as a dispatcher on a military post LOL! My dad who hates anything that's nonfiction in books or movies actually loved this show! He came to visit me at Christmas & watched it 3 time! Once he was outside replacing the windshield wipers on his car, came in for a drink of water sat down & forgot what he was doing & finished watching this movie. Dad passed in 2011 so this is a great memory of him where there weren't that many for me. Good time dad!

Thank you! 👏 Finally, someone agrees that Joe Faux ("F-O-X" 🙄) was a jerk as well as a creeper. Even at the end, he's justifying himself and calling it a "small thing" that he destroyed her livelihood AND her beloved mother's legacy, instead of taking responsibility and expressing regret. He has zero character growth and yet his manipulation and "nice guy only to get a reward" tactics succeed in having the woman whose life he ruined, sob and beg about how she wished he was the one so badly, before falling into his arms. This is not a love story. It's an ode to the corporate overlord who got everything he didn't deserve in life. 💔

The writing letters to her mother is a call back to the original movie shop around the corner, which is where the name of the store comes from. This movie is also one of many remakes including a Broadway show, a movie with judy Garland etc. In the original the wizard from wizard of Oz actor tries attempts suicide offscreen as he believes his wife is cheating on him. I like you've got mail but any other iteration is more nuanced even if the guy is always a jerk... Even when played by Zachary Levi

What's funny (not in a haha way) is that this move highlights the real issue of box chain bookstores driving out independents in the 90s and early 2000s, but now, the chains and independents are sort of on the same side (in an enemy of my enemy is my friend way) because Amazon is using the same tactics that the chains originally used by deeply discounting their books. And they're doing it better...Support your local bookstore! Even if it's a chain!
