I love how the characters keep mentioning cameras or some other way for Pegasus to read minds even though Yugi has explicitly said it's the Eye. They accept that the Eye can let you duel through VHS tape and rip souls from bodies (and personally witnessed that at the end of this duel), but reading minds is somehow outside of its realm of power

Great video. Loving this series. To me Pegasus is the greatest yugioh villain ever. He's iconic but not just pure evil, there's a lot of layers to him. And as you say, when he speaks he delivers big chunks of exposition in a way that is somehow watchable and not just shoved in.

If you think about it, even if Kaiba managed to land his Crush Card Virus successfully on Pegasus, he still would have lost. Remember that after Yugi eventually destroyed Toon World during his duel with Pegasus, not a single monster Pegasus played after that had more than 1500 ATK. Relinquished, Thousand-Eyes Restrict and even the Jigen Bakudan strategy would be enough to beat Kaiba at that point. Also at 3:38, Pegasus pretends to not understand how Kaiba's Duel Disk works because it's part of his scheme. The sole reason Kaiba created the Duel Disk (at least in the Manga) was to block Pegasus' ability to read opponent's minds, as he figured that Pegasus' powers required line of sight and the Duel Disk's ability to produce holographic monsters would block your view of the opponent. This went out the window for the anime because of the Duel Arenas, but it's still important to note.

One of the things that makes Pegasus such a better psychic than the fakers is the important details that he never claims to be psychic. Mai for example said she was a psychic and just kind of hoped people would believe her. Pegasus freaks people out cause he does things a psychic does and keeps doing it consistently, letting his opponents come to their own conclusion. So much more effective.

7:33 I mean, if I have the choice between the eye and the puzzle, the only reason I'm choosing the puzzle is because I don't want to give up my eye for the eye. Being able to see exactly what your opponent has in their hand and on the field is clearly the winning strategy in real life though. We know because there are already decks that allow you to do things like draw like crazy and stack the deck. This is literally what the Dark Magician archetype does in modern times, in fact, to mimic what Atem is capable of doing. As much as I love the deck, it is not a YCS or WCS winning one just because it is designed after puzzle power.

That final Bandit Keith really shows how silence sometimes gets things across better than lines. In the sub, he's just silent, which gives off the feeling he's pissed at seeing such a powerful card like Toon World and is wondering how the heck he's supposed to deal with that. Also, regarding Pegasus's skill: the plot is actually that he's not very skilled without his eye. He obviously knows how to play his cards, but he's so used to knowing what his opponent's cards are that he lost his dueling instinct when dealing with unknown cards.

@@NitPik-p3r That Pegaus part about his skill actually does happen during the duel vs Yami, when the mind shuffling begins. Pegasus gets more frustrated each time he misses (Magical Hats) or a new unknown card gets into play. I don't know how it's dealt with in the dub, but in the sub he's called out on his frustrated reactions that he's having such a hard time because he lost his dueling instinct. Later when activating a spell to destroy the remaining Hats, Pegasus counters that a great duelist doesn't need instinct but just thinks how to win without taking risks, but inadvertently just proves Yami's point because his lack of instinct never made him see that it was Yami's goal all along to make him lose his cool and take drastic action to remove the Hats by card effect rather than just by calmly dealing with them 1 by 1 by attacking them, enabling Yami to use Living Arrow to get rid of Toon World.

The real question is how Atem's soul got reincarnated if it was trapped in the puzzle (like Bakura's in the ring but unlike Seto's, whose reincarnation is the most straightforward).

The thing I really don't like about this duel is Kaiba not having monsters under 1500 ATK after Crush Card is resolved. We all saw him play Hitotsu Me Giant, Mystic Horseman, Grappler, etc. It would have been cool to see him fight under Crush Card and have him struggle, then find a way that would almost win him the game, using only weak monsters, and ultimately fail. It would be a nice character development to see him rely on something other than pure power.

That question at the end about the others not having compassion..... I have a type of answer, but it's a stretch. Kaiba was so rude and such a freaking prick to almost everyone in the anime from moment 1 of his appearance in this anime. The only 2 people he wasn't a dick to were his brother and his 3 copy card crush. And Blue-Eyes isnt even a person!!!! Every other character and most of his cards he finds some way to say something disrespectful or snarky. That is, at least until Yugi beats him in their first duel. Then he begrudgingly respects Yugi for being stronger than him. It's super easy to believe that everyone else feels bad for Mokuba being captured, but they don't care as much about Seto. It's super easy to believe that they all just care more about how he was such a royal snobbish bitch-boy than anything else. Even if he is trying to save his brother, that's not gonna suddenly make him nice to them afterward. It'll just be business as usual, but with 50% more Mokuba. And of course Yugi is the only 1 with a heart of gold with as much compassion as he has since 1. He's the protag. 2. His character is essentially a weak, timid, angel. He's the kindest of the group because he has a childlike mindset that anyone can be at their best and nicest if you gave them a chance. He believes that anyone can be redeemed for their bad behavior as long as you seek to understand them and try to connect with them. How many of the others genuinely believe that at their core the same way Yugi does? Not even Tea has that kind of compassion for everyone at the end of the day. She has a set limit on how much bs and what type of bs she's willing to accept. I mean just listen to her English dub speech about Yugi having a heart when Kaiba was gonna "irl game over" himself over the fact that he COULDN'T SAVE HIS BROTHER MOKUBA!!!! He has the most noble cause and is doing what anyone would consider doing if they couldn't save a loved 1. And what does little miss Friendship Speech have to say about that? She just cheerleads about how Yugi is more of a man because he would never reaort to doing what Kaiba did.

My goofy headcanon is that Croquet and the other guards don't even like Kimo at all. Such a snakey brown-nosing fake go-getter type, jumping at the chance to do more jobs for Pegasus to feel more important and then trying to abuse that authority. I’m not sure. I recently watched breaking bad so I’ll use that as an example. We learn more and more about all the characters and their backstories. And the MORE we learn. The more sympathetic (to a degree) we are for them. But they are still terrifying. I think knowing his backstory would be scarier. Because if there’s nothing stronger than dueling for a loved one. That puts Pegasus on the same level as them as far as determination. We know he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants. It’s an extra factor besides “money and power”

Merrick is great, but I gotta give it to Pegasus He has personal steaks against both Yugi and Kaiba, as well as a personal tie into the game itself. I think he has a ton of personality and he did not feel like a generic villain. Marik feels a bit more like they are trying to come up with a villain. Less organic. Marik also feels more like team rocket in that he tries a bunch of small schemes that never really work out - it feels like he’s winging it Vs Pegasus has one giant arc. And one master plan. Yes, he hired eliminators to “eliminate Yugi “but he was not in direct control of them like Marik was, and I believe they were more designed to test Yugi. Whereas Marik was trying to win
