The more I think about it, Mai really is the most important and well-rounded character in Duelist Kingdom. It may seem hard to believe, but consider this: • Mai was the driving force that made Joey the great duelist he is. She was his first tournament opponent, his first tournament win and instigated the conflict between him and Rex that resulted in Joey winning his ace monster Red-Eyes. • Out of the goodness in her heart, Mai let Yugi and the others camp out with her overnight and gave all of her food and shelter to them. • Mai made a conscious effort to pay back the Star Chips she owed to Yugi, even taking a dive when dueling Téa to help get Yugi out of his slump. • Gave her _Glory of the King's Hand_ card to Joey after Bandit Keith stole his so that he could participate in the tournament. She honestly does so much good for the group and she's a significant character in Yugi and Joey's dueling career.

@@Eric6761 I can kind of understand her case. She's played a few duels once and then only saw her friends playing a whole bunch of cards completely different from the ones she played. It takes at least a few tries to get to the bottom of something. I know the first time my buds at work showed me how things worked I only remembered a few things for a few hours. It's only because of day-to-day grind that it seeped into my memory to the point my body could do it on auto-pilot. This is a lot of the same thing. Imagine someone gives you 40 different pictures and says "This picture means this, this picture means this, this picture means this" until they tell you once what every picture does. Then you pull random pictures and try telling your friend what each picture does on your memory alone and they correct you when you're wrong. Do this for like forty minutes or so. Then you completely forget and ignore this thing you did for days while your friends are reciting completely different random pictures to one another like some crazed lunatics, then, like a week later, they give you the 40 pictures your friend explained you a week ago and you're expected to just remember what they all do because someone told you that one time back then once and corrected you a bunch of times when you got things wrong. That's just not how learning things and memory work.

A big thing lost in the dub, is that this Mai duel and the next Mai duel are both incredibly important in the Yugis cooperating with each other rather than being separate beings. For this duel, while Yugi proclaimed he was scared in episode 24 due to the decision made by Yami, in episode 25 he seems more stuck on the fact he had to interfere in Yami's duel and that he's useless on his own. In other words, it seems the problem's deeper than just what Yami tried to do to Kaiba, the core of the problem is about why he needs Yami in the first place. Mai talks about that courage is about making decisions for yourself, which resonates with Yugi, setting Yugi on the path to want to become much more active in his duels rather than letting Yami deal with everything on his own. Similarly, in the Mai vs Yami duel (which was 100% Yami, not regular Yugi like the dub made it out to be), Mai recognizes that Yami is playing horribly because he's completely distracted, with all of his focus on Pegasus. Mai comes with another lesson here: that a duelist's courage is not tested when they win like Yami has mostly been doing, a duelist's courage is tested when they lose. And that causes Yami to make a revelation: why was he willing to get rid of Kaiba while Yugi wasn't? Because the fear of the consequences of losing were making him desperate, while Yugi had the courage to see a loss through in order to save Kaiba. This makes Yami realize that he's not the courageous one, Yugi is (this is a theme that frequently returns, the earliest example being the Shadow Game vs Pegasus where Yugi is willing to brave the effects of the Shadow Game despite having no resistance for it). Yami then learns from this by doing his Monster Recovery bluff (not fearing the consequences of Mai potentially seeing through it) and it works out. Presumably it's because of those revelations that they truly began to grow together, resulting in gaining the ability to communicate with each other rather than just 1 of them being active at a time.

I feel like some of the fans lost perspective of why Yugi was upset at the start. It wasn't cause he lost, it was cause (in his mind) he almost KILLED someone and lost control of his own will for a moment. That would freak me the fuck out as well. Honestly, Yugi takes being possessed surprisingly well in almost every other episode. That being said, some of these comments were fucking hilarious. Yugi took losing a duel seriously in Season 1. One thing about that I can say about Yugi and Jaden is after they fought their demons, they became way better duelists. Mai was teaching Yugi to face his issues internally rather than just depend on the gang all the time. It was good timing because Yugi needed to be strong to duel Pegasus. If Yami Yugi and Yugi didn’t restablish their trust, they wouldn’t have been able to embrace the puzzle Kaiba probably knew that Yugi beat him fair and square but outta pride and ego, he decided to play dirty. @Mrryn 17 күн бұрын
@@Lucario1121Because in season 0, he legit didn't know and would basically black out as Yami would take over. It was handled much more horror-genre back then, Jekyll and Hyde. And iirc Yami never actually killed anyone except for that one escaped convict who held Tea and her workplace up at gunpoint and even that was indirectly; the others who faced a penalty game got a horrid but fitting punishment but weren't killed and were all objectively awful and evil people. Even Kaiba's first penalty was an illusion meant to scare him and make him feel powerless but it didn't work, which is why Yami mind crushed Kaiba to remove the darkness the second time after Death T (which was reworked/redone for the start of YuGiOh DM). This was when Yugi started to become aware of something going on with him and the puzzle but he still wasn't fully cognizant. It took Yami, who was willing to allow Kaiba to die - a Kaiba Yugi saw was a changed man and who was actively fighting to save his brother (who in Death T, tried to have Mokuba callously killed for failing to beat Yugi at Capmon) - for Yugi to actively for the first time take control away from the pharaoh. Because this time, Yami was actively not just going to let someone die without a second thought but do so vs a person who was not acting evilly. Yami was going to force Yugi's body to give the command to cause the death of an innocent man just trying to save a loved one. Even if indirectly, that was too much and now Yugi is scared stiff that if the spirit was able and willing to do that, what else would he do? Or what has he done already? And this being a kid who is only 16 years old btw.

About the prize thing, that's the reason why the manga has no Yugi vs Joey duel, Jonouchi forfeits the final because he knows Yugi will give him the money and needs to win to get grandpa back. Which shows the kind of trust they have better than the duel.

@@renatoramos8834 Actually no, since there was two prizes (either money or title king of games), Money is awarded after Yugi beat Joey regardless which is chosen, however in order to get hes grandfathers soul, Yugi needs to go for king of games title, which is the only way to battle against Pegasus. If only money, then there is no duel against Pegasus. Prizes are awarded after event.

I actually like the anime version better because it's like Tien vs Goku before facing Piccolo in Dragon Ball, we as the audience know the single main character is the one who should win and go on but in universe they should test each other head to head to make sure the strongest ally is going to face the big bad.
@Mrryn
@Mrryn 17 күн бұрын
@@ThePhantomTomoBut funnily, this is more accurate to some actual card game tournaments where two finalists who are friends and/or teammates just choose to split the prize rather than play out a set. Plus it does make sense from a strategic sense, to hide combos and cards as much as possible and not give the final opponent a chance to prep something, on top of neither Yugi nor Joey being prideful about the matchup. And the Tien vs Goku match is not the best example, specifically or in general. A physical contest to determine who is most fit to proceed at least makes sense for the budokai, though even then there's risk of a serious debilitating injury that the winner receives. Like imagine if Goku scraped a win by the skin of his teeth like he did vs Piccolo but one round earlier vs Tien and then had to fight Piccolo in the finals - they kinda screwed the pooch on things and just gave over the win to the big bad if they don't have any senzu. And Tien and Goku had pride firmly on the line with it being a rematch of the last final which was literally decided by seconds due to a car hitting Goku. Of course they'd want to settle things definitively, whereas Joey knows Yugi is the best bet for Pegasus and superior so no reason to just give things away or waste time.

5:33 to counter this comment "wouldn't the better choice be joey?" Joey vs mai already happened, in the interest of showing the audience a new match up tea offers to duel instead Keep in mind while yes we see plenty of repeat duel over not only this series but many other yugioh shows, those at least have a decent time between then and often the characters have a modified deck Here joey vs mai would effectively be too similar to the start of duelist kingdom

Also I thought the message of the episode is that even though you can be scared and terrified, you still have to fight and push on through. So how did Mai’s “some cards aren’t worth playing” line coordinate with that?
@jk-2053
@jk-2053 15 күн бұрын
I think it could be taken 2 ways. 1. Yugi nearly killed Kaiba in a duel. Mai's "some cards aren't worth playing" could be saying winning isn't that important, assuring him that his decision to let Kaiba win was right. This is flawed in that Mai wasn't there to see Yugi's duel with Kaiba, but perhaps the people in charge simply didn't think very hard. 2. It could be more like a "compare what I would've gained by beating Tea to letting her win". If Mai won, Tea (who was "putting everything on the line", lol) would've simply been upset and it would've put a damper on the group's mood. Because Mai let her win, Tea and crew were instead happy, meaning her winning card simply wasn't worth playing. Similar "winning isn't that important" lesson, but has better context.

About Yami Bakura not trying to steal the puzzle , it's once again the anime building up something to compensate the lack of the first part of the manga. In the manga , the Yami Bakura vs Yugi duel never happens in Duellist Kingdom , it's an RPG shadow game and happens earlier. After this RPG event , it's stated that Yami Bakura have no interest stealing the puzzle anymore cause he found out about Yami Yugi persona during it and knew (even if we learn what for very long after) that he needed Yami Yugi to be alive and recover all the millenium items.

The way it is explained is done poorly but it coming out of Yugi's deck is purely visuals. The Sage's Stone actually just Summons itself as a Spell Monster named "Dark Magician" with the same stats in the anime. Not relevant to this episode but I thought since you were covering the Tea duel, it would be good to explain this so you don't get clowned on in the comments by people who watched the Japanese version and/or the TGS Anime video on the duel.

Hm…is it possible Yugi and Joey don’t discuss the prize split because they don’t want to be seen as match fixing? Also Mai saying Harpy Lady is her best card might also be a way to avoid revealing her actual best cards. Like she said, she’s being kind, not stupid.

U asked how many duelist were invited. U do know if mai was to waiver 6 star chips and won against someone, she would get 6 from that trainer right? Duelist arnt required to just put up one star chip. So she would need to beat to many duelist. Also, in the beginning, u can see that their were plenty of duelist that were invited to the island

Okay I've tried multiple times to post my comment but it won't pop up. So I'll just say, I like this episode, everything makes sense to me, the episode brushing over Kaiba trying to unalive himself is annoying though. As is nobody addressing the obvious "just take off the puzzle" even if I'd personally prefer to keep it on given the most recent person to use dark magic against them all has his hands on Yugi's shoulders the entire episode.

This was as annoying as it is pointless, you'd think tea & tristan would work making actual good decks. Imagine if someone used a monster removal like offerings to the doomed, raigeki break or karma cut during tea's "our friendship will always shine though" speech just to really kick her when shes down. There should be a series with this group of characters where tea & tristan can duel competently & serenity is a intermediate beginner. What decks do you think tea & tristan would use where they're actually good at dueling?

Yeah! I’ll do it again! So for this video. I put up a video explaining the rules and I included a “frame.io” link. It lets you comment right on video timecode. So that you can call out moments right on the timeline.
