AYA - older models are currently exceptional value for money. I have a few in my gun cabinet and would thoroughly recommend buying one. It`s worth remembering that they came - mostly - bored full and half choke. They were`nt intended to be used with these chokes, rather that the owner would have them bored out to the more open choke of his choice. I use an AYA when pigeon shooting and you do need to understand that the lighter game gun variants were intended for a 1oz, 28gm, load. Shooting 32gms all day through a light sbs will give you a serious headache! Most importantly, we all know that the over and under is a passing fad so now is a good time to obtain a decent sbs at a sensible price.

Just picked up a AYA Yeoman this week for £195. It’s a magnum version with beaver tail fore end and pistol grip, still has most of its colour case hardening on action. Fantastic value for money and will go bang every time :)
@nickhorten972 жыл бұрын
@@beeboop1726 it would be worth double checking on what you've bought. The 3" magnum with pistol grip and beaver tail forend is the " no.3" model and not the Yeoman. However you can sometimes find the Yeoman with the same features but only 2 3/4", 70mm, Chambers. If your gun says Yeoman on it, it is one of the latter and not chambered for 3" cartridges. Check the proof marks.
@beeboop17262 жыл бұрын
@@nickhorten97 thanks for the reply Nick, it has 70mm chambers, I was told this is still referred to as a magnum version because of the beaver tail fore end and pistol grip stock, it is a yeoman. It’s from between 1972-1977 according to the serial number. I have emailed AYA to enquire about the specific age and details of this gun however they informed me this costs €50 euro! I thought this service used to be free :(

After 37 years of shooting shotguns I can honestly say my AYA Yoeman was my favourite gun. An AYA Yoeman firing Eley Alphamax BB's is lethal on foxes up to 60-70 yards in the right hands. I no longer shoot but if I were to start again, I would look for an AYA Yoeman.

One of my uncles who got me in to upland game shooting had an A y A No.2 in 28 gauge. It was utterly fantastic in every sense of the phrase. He had to have the firing pins replaced in it once but I don't think he had any issues with it other than that. I got to shoot it on many occasions; I even hunted with it a few times, so I fully understand the love people have for them.
@DobbsOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
Jerrold Shelton Cannot agree more, I believe I was told that when new the gun I now own would’ve cost near 7K. Mine has disk set striker so changing the firing pins are very easy, that is a feature of very high end guns such as the Holland and Holland’s (which I believe the AYAs are a copy of essentially). Value for money is second to none and as you say, there’s a reason everyone rates them highly!
@jerroldshelton93676 жыл бұрын
@@DobbsOutdoors Yeah, the strikers on my uncle's were disc-set, too. Easy to swap yourself, IF you have fitted spares to swap. My uncle had to have a gunsmith make new pins because he couldn't get any factory ones at the time. Value for money is indeed second to none, as you say, especially when the things are bought second-hand.

@@jerroldshelton9367 Too brittle or too soft?
@jerroldshelton93675 жыл бұрын
@@wholeNwon The firing pins in my uncle's gun? Too brittle, at the time the one broke. Note "at the time the one broke." If I remember the story correctly, my uncle, who was a Korean War veteran, bought that gun shortly after his honorable discharge from the Navy. He had it at least ten years before I was born in the mid 1960's. When you shoot a lot, as my uncle did, I rather imagine that firing pins would be a "wear item" in any firearm. As A y A made them, they were probably fine, but "work hardened" over time and use, perhaps? It was somewhere around 1990 when he had the pins replaced. Only one broke, the one for the more open-choke bore, since that got fired a lot more than the tighter-choke barrel. But he had both pins replaced as a precautionary thing, even though only one of them broke. The one that broke took over four decades to fail in a gun that DIDN"T just get shot during California's fairly long upland game bird season, but got used to break clay frequently, too. My uncle was a firm believer in the idea that shotgun shooting was a "degradable skill" like casting a fly rod and that both were skills that took some time and effort to develop and maintain, and he also believed that one should practice with the gun one hunts, so his A y A No. 2 got shot more than most likely do. Hope that helps. The A y A No.2 was, is, and always will be an heirloom-quality piece of kit in my not so humble opinion; something worthy of aspiration.

I’m not sure where you are getting your bargain bin prices (I realize you’re in the UK); but try to buy a 4/53 in the USA and you’ll get fine figured oil stock, boarder engraving on a color case box lock, Anson Dealy forend and beautifully blacked barrels. Twin trigger, timed ejectors. But that’s gonna cost you $3000 plus. Google it. They were almost 3000 twenty years ago. Show me an English box lock of that quality (new) for the same money. You can’t. 10,000 pounds or euros would still bring in a lower quality gun from the U.K. if they made one anyway. “Churchill” tried a few years ago - it was made in Italy. I found this whole piece offensive. Very true to British form. Look. Once you get past Purdey, Woodward, Boss, H&H, Westley Richards, Rigby maybe a couple more, you are left with a lot of Greeners, Scott’s, Cogswell Harrison’s, Hussein, Tolley and a shit load of other guns that couldn’t hold a candle to an AyA #1 or #2.
