Today we're taking a deep dive into Bruce Lee's 3 main kicks - the Jik Tek (straight kick), o'ou tek (hook/round kick), and jut tek (side kick).
With the assistance of ‪@SenseiSeth‬ as my kicking expert, we take a look at the practice, application, and sparring of these kicks. Make sure to sub to him if you haven't also.
Thanks for watchin'!

Just emphasizing the point that for the step-behind side-kick, the CRITICAL element is to have the heel of your supporting leg directly facing your opponent when you execute the step-behind. This from my dojo (Jhoon Rhee TKD lineage).

Disagree with Sensei Seth's criticism of the hook kick; in TKD and karate this is a slide-up round kick and Rose Namajunas knocked Zhang Weili out with one. But I think the karate/TKD version rolls the hip over farther, with more power, at least compared with this demo. I have read that Bruce Lee learned his side kick from Jhoon Rhee, who was an early TSD/TKD teacher in America.

The step up side kick is one of my favorite "ace up the sleeve" kind of moves. Generally, I only throw it when my opponent is staggered. The farthest I've ever been sent flying by said kick was 12 feet. No joke. 9 feet airborne and 3 feet sliding on the ground. Granted that happened when my friend and I were intentionally trying to just see how far we could send someone flying and we were wearing the taekwondo chest armor thingy.

When I spar, I tend to use these kicks the same way that Dutch kickboxers do. I'm more of a Muay Mat; I tend to use hand techniques way more when I fight, only ever kicking as distractions or for playing with distance. I love using these kicks to keep my opponents guessing where the next attack is gonna come from, especially when I shuffle my targets around. A few jik teks to rock the groin cup a bit, then o'ou tek to the liver followed by a cross to the nose; that's a combo I like to use a lot.

Muay Mat is one of the common ‘styles’ within Muay Thai, because there’s people who will prefer one element or love all of them. There’s Muay Femur (strategic all-rounder), Muay Khao (prefers knees and the clinch), Muay Mat (heavy puncher with low kicks), Muay Tae (intense kicker with setups), and Muay Bouk (aggression + stamina). If I missed any or explained it poorly, that’s on me - I don’t train as a Nak Muay but I’m interested in the art as an observer [since I did Kyokushin-kaikan Karate in high school].

@@jonharker9028 I've done Muay Thai for years and no one has mentioned the style names. That's so cool! Even when I fought in Thailand, they mostly just said "oh that guy kicks from the outside" Or "Don't clinch with that guy, his knees are top tier." Cool man, thanks for this.

"Take things as they are. Punch when you have to punch. Kick when you have to kick." - Bruce Lee
@gw1357

I think the thing about Seth's discontent is that Seth comes from an art where the kick is the primary weapon and especially the finishing weapon. He expects to end a fight with a high kick. JKD tends to thing of the kick as an entry tool or an interception. If I'm not mistaken, the step-behind sidekick comes from northern kung fu. I know it was in the little bit of Longfist kung fu that I did (lol, 25 years ago). My understanding is that Bruce Lee studiedthe high kicks from northern kung fu because southern kung fu (including wing chun) does not really believe in high kicks.
@metrolinamartialarts
@metrolinamartialarts Жыл бұрын
I think it's a mix between what you said and what Seth sees as efficient and effective. Because he's so good at making that work, he's just not sure about the other modalities. But, he always gives his reasoning - which makes sense.

As a humble street fighter I don’t have much to offer to the martial arts community, except this one thing: one time I got full on field goal kicked in the balls. I didn’t feel it til hours later. You’re probably better off going w a different target.

Most of the time you should move the lead hand first to cover your movements and start the momentum to the target. At least until they get used to seeing the hand first, then switch. High low, high low, low. Or vise versa, high high. I’m always threatening with the hand to keep the attention off the kicks

We do these kicks in jkd and I use them in Muay Thai too. I really love the pendulum hook kick in Muay Thai because it's so so fast. I've had a lot of success with pendulum hook kick then dropping into the jab if they move back, or pendulum back into a cross if they push forward. Ed, do you teach the pendulum inverted hook kick as well? I've seen you do it high (like a tkd twist kick) in other videos. Just curious as to your thoughts on doing it low to the groin or knee. Great vid!

In my school we never cross the feet when doing any kick, especially the sidekick. My instructor said that's more for the movies. It's like punching, never wind back just to throw a jab or cross. So, same for the sidekick. Don't cross the feet just to load up more power.
@metrolinamartialarts

@@metrolinamartialarts First I'd like to humbly🙏 and respectfully just share what we do in the Original Oakland school. Second I like to say I like your work and I appreciate the passion you share for JKD on here. How we do the sidekick is we mainly use the pendulum/shuffle footwork. We don't cross the feet. Look at the sidekick he does on Bob Wall in WOTD at the beginning of their fight. That's kinda how we do it. It's more of a shorter, economic shot. And not like the ETD exaggerated one where he sent Bob Wall flying, crossing his feet, and really "loading it up." Starting off, beginners don't get taught the "burst step lunge" footwork yet, as that is considered cheating. We generally have people learn how to punch and kick from short range, added with proper breathing and form, and over time their overall form gets better. Honestly, I dont really know how to explain it. I wish I could meet you guys instead to share. Sorry if I didn't explain it that well. edit: if it also helps, we have some original equipment that James Y. Lee he welded specifically for the sidekick.

All in all a pretty decent video, Ed, except for the common mistake you make towards the end with the side kick...
