The thing with Thrawn is that he's actually not a villain but he's certainly a rival to the 'heroes'. I think that is why people enjoy him as a character because it's not a typical scenario of good vs evil, you can genuinely see an Empire being led by Thrawn as a good thing for the galaxy because he's even-handed, respectful and patient. The Clone Wars did lean him into a more villainous personality, more callous, so hopefully the live-action series sees him portrayed more like the novels. I think you nailed it when you said he's written like Sherlock Holmes and I think this is the root of his appeal. It's interesting to see how his mind works and although you know the story is written in such a way as to make him always right it's fascinating to see how he breaks down the logic of why something will happen from an in-universe perspective.
@noiwonttellyoumyname.43853 жыл бұрын
You think the shows made him into more of a villain than the books? Seriously? Those were kids shows, and that was Thrawn-lite. OG Thrawn is *absolutely* a villain. Just ask the people of that planet whose art he couldn't quite figure out. Oh, wait- you can't. Because he exterminated them and destroyed their planet.
@KryyssTV3 жыл бұрын
@@noiwonttellyoumyname.4385 The Rebels Thrawn was more callous because he made things personal. His treatment of Hera, taunting her with her families Kalikori was very out of character. The destruction of the planet was pragmatic, not personal. The Rebel's Thrawn was made more of a classical villain because of the audience. The glee on his face when said things like, "I will tear them apart - piece by piece" Even when confronting Ezra in his office, he gave Ezra a sly look and a smirk when he said, "I have even taken some of Sabine Wren's work. She's quite talented. Or was quite talented." It was moments like this when the scene couldn't make him more naferious unless they gave Thrawn a long moustache and had him twsit it while giving a good old "Mwahahahaa!" belly laugh. It just wasn't the same cold, calculating professionalism we see from Thrawn in the novels. He never made it personal, but the Rebel's version did. As for mass destruction making someone a villain, be careful about what criteria you place on villainy. Let's not forget that the Allies in WW2 dropped two nukes on civilian targets. In wars, neither sides are heroes but does that make them both villains?

@@thrawn82 Honestly, I'd like to see him go into an alliance with the New Republic. Thrawn's biggest concern was some threat in the Unknown Regions past Ascendancy space that he felt the Chiss wouldn't be able to fend off if they were sandwiched between this undisclosed threat and a hostile Empire. The collapse of the Empire has created a power vacuum and many uncertainties, factors and variables that are too numerous to predict as a result of various powers vying for position in the galaxy. Instability of that magnitude is a threat to his people. That's why he's back. He won't be trying to return the old Imperial age, he'll be looking to create a vassel government for the Chiss Ascendancy. That alone will cause division within his new Empire who wouldn't like being servants of an "alien" empire.

When I first heard of Thrawn, I was quite hesitant, mostly because he was with the Empire and not the Rebell Alliance. But that didn't last very long. After going through only one book, and watching some videos about him in Star Wars Rebellion, I decided to get as many books about him as I could. What I liked the most about him, is his character. He's not someone who sends his soldiers into a battle in order to gain glory for himself. And he's smart enough and cunning enough to known when he should fight and when he should pull back. And unlike Lord Vader and Emperor Palpatine, he doesn't rule by fear and terror, but by inspired loyalty, and even accepts ideas from subordinates that are better than his own.

Thrawn was pure, cold logic personified. He *knew* he was the best tactician alive - he proved it regularly, running rings around military genius' like Garm Bel-Iblis and Admiral Ackbar. The New Republic was paralysed with fear at just the rumour of his survival. Being aware of your skill isn't arrogance. Another GREAT aspect of Thrawn not as often discussed as his analytical perception (studying art...) is how REASONABLE he is, actually RESPECTS his crew so long as they're dutiful and hard working. Unlike Vader, the Emperor or any number of high ranking admirals in the Empire, Thrawn doesn't *irrationally* punish failure... to the contrary he *rewards effort over results* . A scene from the Zahn books that always sticks with me is when Thrawn's flagship is pursuing the Millennium Falcon; Trying to capture it before it can jump to hyperspace, and while the Falcon does make its escape, Thrawn noticed one of his bridge officers attempting an experimental.... techy-maneuver (ok ok, been a real long time since I read it and don't have my copy of the books, going to have to improvise from memory).... Anyway, Thrawn asks his bridge officer what he just tried to do. The officer explains his original concept of the techy-maneuver, some new approach to applying the technology in a way never thought of before that could have theoretically prevented a hyper-jump. If this was Vader we know what the fate of that officer would be. Vader wouldn't have even bothered to ask, only dished out his punishment for the failure he witnessed. But not Thrawn. Before reacting... he *considered* . He requested the information and from that, assessed the POTENTIAL. So instead of a summary execution, Thrawn *recognizes* the talent of this officer and grants him leave to pursue research into the techy-maneuver, even giving the officer all the manpower and resources needed to develop the concept into realization. And that patience & respect pays off when later the Star Destroyer is successfully able to prevent the Falcon's hyperspace jump. Thrawn UNDERSTANDS the *virtue of failure as an opportunity for success* .... and that.... IS AN AMAZING CHARACTER QUALITY.

9:15 that is yet to be seen in the ASCENDENCY trilogy...from the dialogue between thrawn and Eli vanto, as well as the other references throughout...it would be more comprehensible to say his exile was a “plea bargain” that also served as a convenient smokescreen... With his experiences with anakin and knowing through the force that ones intent or honesty could be gauged...he was actually exiled...but it was a willing one...a fine distinction, but this way he could tell palpatine he was exiled and it wouldn’t be a lie...

Thanks for posting this video! Not to spoil it for anyone who doesn't know, what I am personally hopeful for is that, with the introduction of Thrawn into "The Mandalorian" series, they might make some/most parts of "The Thrawn Trilogy" canon. This would include some other badass characters introduced in this book trilogy and important to the many events of the Star Wars Universe in general (yes, I know that they are actually Legends/Expanded Universe characters, but I can dream).

I’ve always wondered how Thrawn would do as a football head coach. Not necessarily from a knowledge of the game standpoint, but imagine studying every currently active player’s and coach’s past/style and designing plays/creating mismatches based off that info. I’m aware that is somewhat what current staff does, but Thrawn’s capacity to do so seems 100x human.

"Sir we are ready to engage the enemy fleet, what strategy shall we use.!" Thrawn placed his finger to his chin as he once again ruminated about the path forward, for less than half a minute the bridge was calm with only the hum of the engines being heard. He locked both crimson jewels on his target, "Hit them till they die." he said coolly with an even colder half smile. "Hit them?......what?" A bewildered officer said, however his bemusement would soon turn to pain as his cheeks made contact with the leather of Captain Pelions gloved hand. "You heard the Grand Admiral." Pellion barked with a passionate fury "Hit them till they die."

I am not sure I want Thrawn to be involved with the Empire post-RotJ in the canon continuity. I feel that Zahn has been setting up his character for a return to the Chiss Ascendancy and the Unknown Regions to have Thrawn go down a different path than he did in Legends. I would prefer that over a remake of the Thrawn trilogy, of which we already know that he doesn't succeed in beating the New Republic. I just hope Zahn and Filoni don't have opposing ideas on Thrawn's future

What i find most interesting is hes not a villain. Hes a military commander. Brilliant, tactical genius. Hes also fair minded. To say hes a villian is incorrect. Hes formidable. I do hope they give him the red glowing eyes, not the eyes the character has in rebels.
