Porosity plays a rather large factor in the overall health of your hair! Why? Because understanding your porosity means knowing how to keep your moisture balance high! This is important because dry hair breaks!

I am soooo freaking thankful you made this video! My 10 y/o daughter always hates for me to do her hair on wash day because it takes so long. She has very, very thick, curly hair that used to be easier to manage but now it's become very dry, no matter what I put on it & I know why. She's hp but I've been treating it as if it's Lp like mine. Detangling her hair is the worse. I wet it & put lots of conditioner on it but because her hair was usually matted it was a long, difficult process. I don't have a hooded dryer but I do have a heat cap and I will start giving her deep conditioning treatments every wk now.

I had low porosity, now feels moisturized as I did my hair masque 1 X a week & I used a clear shower cap along with a crochet hat, then I put a wet towel in the microwave to warm it up & kept this on my head for at least 20-30 minutes & I truly believe this helped allot & saved myself from space, which I don't have allot of these days, plus saved some CA$HOLA... I sure love your vids. Thank you, love ya Boo. Hugs to you & yours. 😘💞🎵🌷🌺🌸😆👏👍💫🌟💛 ~"Love, Hope, Peace, Dream, Inspire, Laughter, Joy, Give, Live & Let Live"~

If you don't mind me asking, do you make your own masks or buy them premade? I have LP hair too that's fine strand and thick density wise, and would consider trying what you said. I think if I could introduce more moisture into my hair it would help me alleviate some of the bad tangling and struggles that plague wash day. I WISH I had the strength and patience to do a masque once a week but, honey, I may have to find a compromise for the sake of my sanity lol 😂

Wow! Best hair porosity explanations I’ve heard yet. Now I finally understand my main hair type is medium porosity but now I get why my roots were more low porosity and my colored ends are high porosity. I also get why some products work better than others and why sleeping in conditioner over night wasn’t really doing much at all. Thank you so so much. If more women were aware of this, it would make caring for our individual crowns so much easier.

Thank you SO MUCH for this info! Very helpful for me to keep moisture in my daughter’s hair without the buildup, thus causing scalp issues! I’m finding using gentle (sulfate Free) Shampoo and conditioners with no “cones” and oiling her scalp before putting in any other leave in conditioner ore shea butter is helping the scalp stay healthy.

Hi Llnwood, Thanks for this video. I learned more in this short video than I've heard or seen on KZbin in the last 2 years. I didn't know that different porosity types could be present in the same hair strand, or how the stand ends could absorb moisture differently than the root. The tips about the correct shampoos and conditioners was very helpful. Thanks, God bless

I know this is older but very helpful. I am Caucasian and mid 50s woman. I noticed a change in my hair with menopause, making it much higher porosity which I did not know what that was at the time. This has been very helpful. I have been using Nioxxin shampoo to help with hair loss (related to hormones) but now see that it has sulfates. I will probably keep using it because I think it helps but will concentrate it only at the scalp and try some of the other ideas here. Thanks for this video!

I’m still confused on what porosity my hair is! I have curly to wavy hair, but I have a relaxer so I’m sure that changes the type and it’s starting to matte easily and knots on my strands after perming. It gets tangled while washing my hair. I know that my hair takes a long time to dry after washing under hair dryer. And my hair is dry all the time! That’s all I got!

Hi Linwood -- love how you breakdown information regarding black hair..... you keep it real and relevant. i'm a 50+ black female and my "fabric" of natural hair is fine and thin (AND low density). i am pretty sure that it is high porosity as well (the water in the glass test did not work for me - i thought my hair was low porosity for a while). i only wish i could sit in your chair weekly to help me understand protein treatments and moisturizing/over-moisturizing for, what i think, is fragile hair. If possible, can you do a video on my type of hair???

Confusing because I get single strand knots, my hair matts if I keep braids too long, my hair sometimes dries fast in the summer and fairly slow in winter, moisture also depends on what products I use. Some my hair keeps (like olive oil, Jamaican black Castor oil, shea butter), and some just sit on my hair especially coconut oil. My hair loves honey, ACV rinses and heat, warm water included. It's sensitive to protein (especially concentrated protein like eggs) Sulfates don't always make my hair feel stripped (depends on brand) otherwise Sulfate free has me scratching my scalp in 2 days after washing. So my hair characteristics are very mismatched. It's difficult to tell what my porosity is and it's kind of frustrating. I'm 4b, 4a (in the nape of my neck). In the end I think I should just stick to whatever my hair likes otherwise I'll go crazy with all this technical information
