Thanks for sharing. Very helpful! This confirms what I’m reading in The Stone Builder’s Primer, but good to know what local experts are using exactly in terms of materials and gear etc. I’m looking to try my hand at some rock walls and stairs with natural stone found off-grid at a property up not too far from you, up in Desolation Sound, but it’s boat in only! So a lot of hurdles even getting material there. Appreciate your videos for the small scale work that I can try out up there. If the small walls and steps work out, might try to make an old timer type foundation or small cabin…

I really appreciate you taking the time for this man. I'm making sure to share it. I own my own small business doing landscape construction and also work for a larger landscape company to improve my skills in all the larger aspects. I don't get to do a lot of mortar, so I am always having practical application questions. Keep up the good work man. Do you have any video from like a start to finish on a project covering all the bases? Just curious. I like to put myself on other people's jobsites to learn haha😅

Thanks for this video. I've been working with concrete and masonry for a number of years as a lay person (no major disasters yet) but I've recently wanted to formalize my patchwork knowledge a little bit in terms of expanding beyond premixed bags and getting into DIY mixing. I've seen a lot of references to one of the components for mortar mixes (in addition to a sand and portland) being hydrated lime. This is something that I have no familiarity with so I've been poking around looking to find out more about it. A lot of videos don't seem to reference it directly. In your video here, I thought maybe you were going to get into it a bit when you spoke about mixing a type 10 cement with a type S cement. I know lime is available in type S and N, so I was thinking maybe this was the hydrated lime element, but just not being referred to as such. If you don't mind setting me on the right track, what's the deal with hydrated lime? Is this something that's being premixed into bags like the type 2 portland cement that I often use? Any tips would be appreciated. I feel like i'm missing some basic concept that (once I "get it") will make everything else make sense.

Yes Portland has lime, it's all about the ratios that make it MSN O etc grades.. more lime less strength more flexibility, more permiability, all pros and cons to such in different uses, ..I think I have that right, do you're due diligence 👍

Thanks for taking the time to answer. It's all sort of confusing to me given how different materials used in making mortar tend to have different names used by different people.@@johnstisowain8556

Any chance you could do a more in-depth lesson on how to chizzle a rock. E.g looking for how rocket will break where to hit the rocks. 👍👍

I really appreciate your knowledge. What would you suggest for a brick indoor oven?I have seen people using two different types one for the design and one type for the fire bricks thanks

Kevin Finally, the mortar video. 😂 I need your advice: I can’t find just masonry cement in any type here in Oregon. I have tried a Masons Supply and place called Mutual Materials. So I bought a premixed Mortar S from SpecMix. I would like to try your recipe and add some Portland and 6 scoops of sand but my specmix already has the sand. What should I do? 2 Portland 2 lime 6 sand? This would be for my flagstone stairs and risers for front yard
@HardscapeCanada
@HardscapeCanada Жыл бұрын
Hey, you can mix the Specmix with sand and Portland for sure to create the ratios you want, always keep a 3:1 ratio of sand and cement. So for instance you could put about 4 shovels of spec mix, 3 shovels of sand, one shovel of Portland to create a good mixture.

@@HardscapeCanada Can I ask why 4 shovels of spec mix? I am confused on that number. How did you get to that 4?
@HardscapeCanada
@HardscapeCanada Жыл бұрын
4 shovels = (3sand +1 cement) so it’ll be a 50/50 mix

@@HardscapeCanada I think that’s where I’m confused since it’s all a premixed mortar Portland Lime Sand in it thats the part that confuses me.

@@HardscapeCanada Do you think with this job that I need to get one of those electric barrel mixers for about eight steps in a 25 foot run with a 29” rise . Not a huge hill. But it will be nice for people to cut through the middle of my yard instead of Walking up the driveway; plus the steps will give me more practice with shaping and visualizing, cutting and scribing. Basically every thing you teach. 😆 I always wondered if those stones you have in your stair video were pre cut so that you had them at the right riser height. I find I’ll have to set my riser height choose the boulders that I have, and then basically snap a chalk line on them and create that flat part for the tread flagstone to sit on. The tools I have available to me is the Micon products you depicting in your videos and a 7 inch grinder so hopefully with those tools I can get flat tops. Plus I ordered those lights you talked about. This will take me a little bit. I think for each step that has the lights I will 90 out to the side through conduit. And then possibly connect one main line that runs to a junction box.

Very informative. I know nothing about mortar. I've never had to do any of that kind of work or repair but I have a crack in my craw space foundation and I'm trying to educate myself and no place better than KZbin. I have a crack shaped like an H so it's both vertical and horizontal. The vertical cracks are like a half to 3/4 " and the horizontal cracks are butted up to each other with no space. It's not pushing in so I was planning on widening the cracks a little and putting some kind of mortar in the cracks and then I was thinking I would epoxy in place carbon fiber strips over the crack to add support and hopefully keep it all together. Anybody have any suggestions?
