I had to open a bottle of medication when I was flying. When asked what the medication was, I replied, “ That’s my opium.” Yeah, he tested it, but as it was in a medicine bottle, with the prescription label on it, I was in the clear. I was even asked if I would like to repack my bag myself, and I think that was because I was cheerful and cooperative at all times. I thanked them for keeping us safe, and got some smiles from them in return. Being polite is the best policy. (And that is why I arrive at the airport at least two hours early.) I am 80 now, and have decided I prefer road trips, so this part of my traveling life is hopefully over.

OMGosh I just finally tried using my compression packing cubes that I've had forever! What a game changer. I used to use the shrink bags but there's not much organization w/ that style. I'm hooked now, thanks...y*

Fun fact: I flew to Montreal and Boston in June, San Fran in July, and Vegas in Sept. All the airports let us keep our 1 quart bag in the carry-on whilst going through security. So that's been a lot less scrambling. And one airport let us keep our shoes on (but I can't remember which one!)

OMG I just learned from you that my CPAP machine doesn't count toward carry on limits! (On AA anyway.) This is a game changer as the CPAP machine was the only thing preventing me from going carry-on only for frequent trips to Florida. Thanks!!

So I found a personal bag that seems to fit Canadian airlines perfectly! The Herschel Strand bag, it has sturdy two-way zippers, and if you get the diaper bag version it has a strap and internal pockets. I worry that a cheap bag will fall apart while away so I felt like I needed something better. Still waiting for your video on your fav better personal bags video :) CDN personal ag dimensions are so tricky

I travel with both a CPAP and liquid magnesium now. The magnesium (8oz in its original container) was questioned in a few airports but allowed to go through, as far as the CPAP it was only removed from its case going from Vancouver BC to Whitehorse in the Yukon. I check a bag and only carry a personal item and CPAP case. Love this series!

Security at YVR is the fussiest I’ve experienced. I’ve travelled through international airports all over the world and the only time I have ever been asked to repack my liquids into the regulation plastic bag was at security for a regional flight out of YVR.

Traveling within Canada, you usually have to take out your CPAP machine as it is considered a large electronic device (same as laptops, etc). I have been through YVR, YYZ, YUL, plus a few other smaller regional airports and I always have to take out my machine. I switched to the Resmed Air Mini travel CPAP and it is game changer! No need for water and the unit itself is very compact. If you travel regularly it's well worth the investment. I also have a dedicated CPAP bag and it does not count as carry on or personal item.

I really liked the information on creating outfits always looking for tips. Recently came back from a trip to SF - cruised down on Princess and flew WJ back to canada. No issue with the Cpap which is two years old. No issue on the cruise ship - The only condition is if you need an extension cord, the cruise ship will provide it and you can order distilled water in advance. For short trips, we calculate how much water Will be required for the trip and carry it in a bottle in our check bag. All airports that we have flowen through in Canada, US and Mexico only want to see the compressor of the CPAP. We always carry on our cpap and medication i would never risk damage or loss in carry-on and WJ and AC allow you an extra carryon bag for medical equipment. Keep the tips coming!

Great info here. Only thing I would change is to rephrase “always carry your necessary medication in your carry-on with you” to carry it in your _PERSONAL_ item. You can be forced to check, or gate-check, your carry-on bag, whereas, barring any odd circumstances, you will be allowed to bring your personal item with you on the plane. I was forced to gate-check my carry-on on both legs of a Delta flight, as we were boarding. Not the time to have to rummage through your carry-on to find your meds, jewellery, and other necessities. I have my CPAP in my personal item (backpack) for that very reason. Not the most convenient of things, but better than losing it, or having it get damaged in the hold.

We love to travel Carry-On, but super sad we couldn't bring a "fog globe" home from SFO. 5oz🤦🏻‍♀️ (Thanks to your video we did get to try a Waymo though.) My new tip? Check your luggage before you travel, because one of our old ones had a broken handle. Didn't notice till travel day. Now I get to buy new luggage 😊

Just a heads up for CPAP users. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS USA ONLY: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibits all airlines from counting medical equipment against the carry on limitations. CPAPs are specifically identified as medical equipment. Therefore, CPAP is always allowed as a 3rd item carry on. This applies to all flights within the U.S. and to international flights flying into the U.S. However, if you are flying from the U.S. to another country then that FAA reg is not applicable. Although, I can say by experience that Delta follows this reg even on its int'l flights departing the U.S. I've never had an issue carrying on my CPAP as a 3rd item on any U.S. flight or airline. I will note that I use the travel bag that came wit my CPAP, which is the same type every CPAP has come with for over 5 years now. It screams CPAP to the gate agent and FAs who know what those bags are for and never question them as a third item.

I am currently on the hunt for this! I am definitely pro backpack for the weight and mobility, but sometimes I want to roll it. Most backpacks with built in wheels are heavy and bulky and aren't great to actually wear as a backpack. I am actually considering building some type of collapsible 'cart' that any backpack can slip onto. If I can find/create a solution, we will make a video about it immediately. Thanks for the suggestion!

There are a couple of significant problem with most hybrid roller backpacks. The number one issue is that with both backpack straps and wheels and retractable handle, these bags end up being very heavy, even when empty. They typically weigh 6 lbs (2.72 kg) or more. Five years ago, I found an Outbound brand hybrid roller backpack in like new condition for $35 at a consignment store. But I’ve never used it. When I bought it, I didn’t realize how heavy it is. It weighs a whopping 9 lbs (4 kg) before I’ve even packed anything into it. The last two international trips I’ve taken have been on airlines with weight restrictions for carryon bags: Air New Zealand (7 kg) and Turkish Air (8 kg). So, needless to say, at 4 kg completely empty, the Outbound bag did not make sense for either of those trips. The other significant issue to watch out for with a hybrid bag is coverage of the wheels. When worn in backpack mode, the wheels can rub against and soil your clothing. Some hybrid bags have taken this into account and have a built-in system to cover the wheels. I recommend looking for a hybrid bag with this feature. Keeping those issues in mind, some brands you might want to look at for a hybrid roller bag backpack are Eagle Creek; Osprey; and Hynes Eagle. Rick Steves also has a rolling backpack. It’s relatively lightweight at just over 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) but it does not have wheel covers. And sadly, I cannot vouch for the quality. I bought a toiletry bag from Rick Steves and the second night of our trip, it came apart at the seams. The fabric was frayed beyond repair. There are also a variety of hybrid bags available on Amazon. I recommend reading all the available reviews and doing thorough research before making a purchase decision. Good luck with your search and please come back with an update if you find a good hybrid bag.

I haven’t traveled in over 20 years, internationally. I bought a soft sided carry on (Travel Pro). I’ve read there may be an advantage to having a suitcase with the 2 wheels on cobblestones. What’s your opinion? Because I’m sort of in love with new smaller Beis carry on. But it has 2, non-recessed wheels.

I always pack my c-pap in checked luggage for ease of movement through airport. I did not know you can not do this. Do you know why??

It's not a rule but rather a best practice. I don't trust baggage handlers with a 1-2K item! Plus if your bag gets lost, delayed, etc you won't have your machine with you. My CPAP and medication do not leave my side.
