Once apon a time I had to make the call between going to US university and staying at home in the UK. I had a tennis scholarship offer to a top American college. But made the decision to stay in the UK
5 years later and after graduating I thought I’d go back for deep dive on the differences between US college and UK university. To do this I flew out to Miami and explored U Miami college, from the differences in applications for College/ university, to the differences in getting accepted to university/ college. The differences in social life. How to apply to us college, how to apply to UK university. What American college is actually like. What college football is like. What going to a college in America is like. What university in the UK is like. What social life is like at university/college. How to get into a frat. How to get into a sorority. Differences between frat and sorority and society’s in the uk. I also cover some crazy facts about US college football. The differences in academia at the university. Right from the length of the degrees.
All in all the differences are vast, and the experience is the polar opposite.
I hope you enjoyed the video, if you have any questions feel free to send me a dm!
Have a great day

Great vid, I’m in community college here in the states, soon to transfer to a uni, so it’s nice to know more about it. It is fair to mention that the university sticker price is before financial aid - most people end up spending much, much less.

Hey, just a few questions as I'm planning to go to studying in the USA as well, but I'm skeptical about these. did you honestly get to work for 20h per week? And how it went after getting your degree, did you get OPT/CPT? Would be grateful if you could help me on those.

Hey, so amazing vid, but the college application process in the us is a bit different than what’s described here (probably to keep it simple). There’s three main parts to your application, your academics, extracurriculars, and your essays. Academics: your high school grades + SAT and/or ACT scores + any other testing including ap exams (aps are classes that are deemed college lvl and if you pass an end of year exam you are awarded credits so you can skip that class in college). Extracurriculars: any activities you’ve done outside of academics that show colleges your interests, drive, passion, and why they would want you. Examples include: charity work, volunteering, sports, clubs, jobs, and passion projects. Essays: there’s the personal statement, which is the essay that tells colleges about you and what you bring to the table. Then supplementals and other questions that each individual college may ask, such as “why this school?” “Why this major”, many top colleges ask “weird” questions such as “you have 10 minutes to give a ted talk to a million people, what do you talk about?”. These supplementals are different for all colleges, many have 0 and some can have up to 7. Though these are the 3 main parts, there’s even more. You have your recommendation letters and awards. The rec letters are written by teachers or other adults who can speak on your behalf of what you bring to the community. You usually need two rec letters, but some colleges ask for none and some ask for more. As for awards, you can include any awards that you have received that you think show the college your strengths and talents. That’s about it for the us college application process

Yeh sorry I feel like for the sake of simplicity I was trying to keep it brief. As I could do a video on each section in its entirety. Normally I would have gone into more depth and i regret not doing it as I see there are holes in what I’ve said. Thank you for clarifying though 🖤

colleges in the US also vary drastically! I go to a very small school of about 4,000 people with no greek life and no football team. We do have rugby though which is kind of funny. I love my school and know I would hate a school like Miami haha

The thing about this, is that Maimi is in the top division (Division 1), but is know to not generally have a good atmosphere, mainly because their stadium is way way away from campus, and they play in an NFL stadium (Dolphins). NFL stadiums generally feel much more corporate than on-campus stadiums, and many of them have higher capacities than NFL stadiums too.

It sucks that the day that you watched was raining because games - especially playoff ones - can easily attract 70k plus in person spectators - especially at schools like Penn State where the stadium is on campus

Very interesting. Im from Italy but I did my bachelor in philosophy in southern Switzerland paying around 1000 francs per year (only private there) with financial aid and then I went for my master in an italian public uni in Milan and I paid according to my financial situation which in my case was 200 euros per year (the lowest) 😂 and then I went to a private cinema school to study acting and again I paid according to my situation, this time it was around 2000 euros per year. To get in all of those I just had a very simple interview. Only for acting they kinda tested me a bit.

SATs and ACTs are the farthest things from iq tests. The whole reason they are so much less important than they were decades ago is because most schools recognize A) that they are an incredibly poor indicator of intelligence, ability, and academic record, and B) can be cheesed to the point of absurdity as they are more matters of test-taking strategy implementation. Today, the average SAT and ACT scores for colleges are incredibly inflated for this very reason, so really in today’s academic landscape they mean nothing.
@James____Edward
@James____Edward 4 ай бұрын
I think from the UK perspective they appear as IQ tests. I understand it’s more cognitive thinking, and you can definitely practice for them 🖤
