I'm really enjoying this series! One of the things I like about it is some of the really out of the box designs, that may not top the leaderboard, but still perform admirably well. Maybe it would be fun to add a poll for the "fan favorite fan" at the end of each season. Just a suggestion.

This is so interesting! I could rant forever about computer cooling, like, why arent the CPU on the other side of the Mobo, making it easy to cool with a passive heat sink? Fans are really interesting as well, especially since application makes huge difference in what fan works where. For a tight heat sink with lots of back pressure you would want a fan with a low angle of attack on the fan blades, as they "pump" air with more force. As an exit fan a large angle of the blade is better. Since most fans are variants of airplane propellers the new and different ones on this show are really interesting. Keep it up, love it!

I sent mine at 6th August 2020, spec wise I followed the stuff in the thingverse, I made it in OpenSCAD, is that an issue? Yet another question would be if you contact the sender upon finding some solvable issue? It would be nice to have some feedback over the rejected fans and the reasoning... And ... I noticed my submission had the .scad with 0 bytes and just now I went ahead and inspected the STL file just to find a few issues due to corruption. I probably uploaded it to the email before the file was finished saving... damn ... D: Well I've replied to my own email with the correction, oh well... If it gets picked I hope at least you get the correct version...

I think I'll create an entry to send to the fan showdown. I want to start my own PC part platform, at the moment, I have some designs in progress, but I can't yet start the rapid prototyping process. I've an idea, have you ever heard of starlite? It was/is a material with extreme heat resistance, and it's famous for its interesting story. In short, the recipe is lost, but I've seen some diy attempts that almost replicate it. One of the characteristics of the material is that if you apply heat on a side, it (almost) completely protects the other side - a common demo for it is using a blowtorch on a egg protected by it, and the egg survives uncooked. Anyway, what would happen if you coated the blades of a good (maybe even a bad) fan? In theory, it would rather limit the heat to one side of the fan, thus making sure the air being blown should be cooler than it normally is. If the concept and the material works, it might work well to "direct" heat where we want.
@loganthomas50434 жыл бұрын

I've been watching this showdown for a while (thanks, youtube algorithims) but one thing I think is being lost here is how certain fans do with certain amounts of static pressure, and related to that the other issue I see is that the fan is run open on both sides for the smoke tests. This means the pressure is equal on both sides of the fan, other than what the fan has going on in its immediate vicinity. It would be interesting to see these designs running in maybe a plexi box to simulate a case, and/or through a modified Mass Air Flow sensor to determine true air flow rate at a given pressure. The radiator cooling Delta measurement is useful as is the sound reading though.
