Love that the zero waste community is so open talking about period routines. This is how I learned about menstrual cups and period underwear - I did not grow up in an environment that encouraged talking about these things. It has been such a game changer using both of those - which I personally find more comfortable than tampons and pads. I use the organic cotton brief and love them!

I have a pretty heavy period on my first and second day. i use a pair of the super high waisted ones, one for day one, one for day two. and then i use the basic bikini cut one (i think that's what its called), for day 3 and 4, no issues. I've been using them for about a year and only have leaked once which was my fault

As a transmasculine person Thinx has been a godsend for me. The whole disposable process and constantly seeing it and dealing with it was very distressing and dysphoric for me and Thinx has given me such peace of mind about my cycle. I was constantly having leakage and staining my sheets at night, which only served to trigger my dysphoria more. Since I’ve started using Thinx and having clean sheets every time I just… idk it’s hard to describe. I’m forever grateful Shelbizleee introduced me to Thinx and I converted to reusables so thank you✨💕 I highly recommend them to any other transmasculine person with a cycle and people with cycles in general.

Omg thank you, I've been undecided about buying any period underwear because no-one was talking about how to incorporate washing them into an existing laundry routine! I was so confused thinking "ok, but what do I do with them until laundry day? I'm not gonna run an extra wash just for 1 pair of pants once I've used them!"
@sl3772
@sl3772 3 жыл бұрын
@@Merciaks yes I honestly wash them with my darks and because I've rinsed them it's absolutely no issue at all. Also, generally just hang dry them because in the ones I have they have a material that shouldn't go in the dryer (it should say on the tag) but that's easy enough, they dry in a day usually 😊

There are different brands of cups, so one might work better than another. Also, there are reusable menstrual discs that fit a little different and don't use suction. Also, the discs can be used during sex if you're down with that while menstruating.

I've been using my menstrual cup for 5 years now and I still think it was the best thing that happened in my life, but about period underwear, my sister uses them, she has one for each day of her usual period, if I'm not mistaken, the first days she changes them 2 times, which means 3 used, and it goes down to 1 in the day. She cleans them right when she takes them off, probably cause she has only 5 or 6 now, just with water and then puts them in the washing machine with the other clothes normally.

I use period underwear at home or when I know I won't be away from home for long. I share my office with men who comment on everything. So when my officemates are in I plan to use disposables so they don't comment on me taking my purse with me outside of the office. The woman's bathroom near my office has an old filing cabinet that I periodically stock with the organic cotton tampons that I use for this purpose. The mensural cup stresses me out for some reason so I can't personally do it.

That's wild. You're literally compromising with immature ass men who mean nothing and add no real value or sustenance to your life.. just so they won't comment on a natural bodily function? Thank you so much for normalizing periods! I’ve had my cycle for 1.5 years (I’m a teen) and I’ve used cloth pads from pink lemonade shop for every period except my first. I recently learned to use tampons and really like them so I am currently attempting a menstrual cup. To wash my cloth pads I would save them in a wet bag until the end of my period then soak them in water with oxi clean before throwing them in the washing machine with my clothes. I rarely have leaks with cloth pads. Also a brand called ruby love has reusable period swimwear which are great for when you don’t want to or don’t know how to use tampons.

I am 1 period into using period panties. I learned a lot! I have Thinx hi waist and modibodi sensual hi waist (heavy-overnight) Okay first, I thought super hi waist meant they were extra high, not more absorbent 😂🙈 Second, they take 2 days to air dry which is why you need more than 4 pairs! Trust me on this one LOL Third, You will definitely be nervous when you all of a sudden sneeze or stand up but thankfully, never leaked! Fourth, I don't have a washing machine and hand wash mine. No smell and they get all clean!

My question: where does the absorbent part sit in in the underwear? My problem with my reusable period undies is that I have never found a pair with the gusset high enough at the front. Like the absorbent part would end mid labia. I have a slightly thick butt, so the front does sit lower, but so many people surely struggle with this. I need high gussets!

@xenab shoaib I have always used the Lunette cup model 1 and love that one. I did have to cut the stem off completely in order for it to be comfortable which is okay. My sister uses the diva cup and has never had an issue with that. For both of us menstrual cups do have a little bit of leakage just because when you put them in if there's any blood on your vaginal walls the cup is not going to stop that so I use my period underwear or liners. I have recently just had a super heavy flow for me (filling the cup in 4 hours) and I could feel when it was leaking/overflowing so I went to the bathroom and dumped it and just wiped it with toilet paper since I was out in public

I have one pair of thinx, and several reusable pads. I have learned that I prefer reusable pads. I really want to use a menstrual cup, but I'm just not there yet. I would recommend soaking any reusable products you use! It helps get them clean. I soak mine for a few hours and then rinse and spray with soapy water and let them dry until my next load of laundry. If you soak too long, that could cause some stink. Twelve hours max is what I recommend.

One when a wakeup up and then one or two during the day and one for sleep.

The reason I stopped using reusable pads recently and haven’t considered period underwear is that I no longer have in unit washer/dryer and have to go to a laundromat. It’s just really inconvenient and not private, but I do feel guilty about not being as sustainable as I used to be- does anyone use these products and go to a laundromat? Or do you hand wash at home (I’m not sure if it’s vigorous enough)? Would love to hear tips if so.

This is awesome!! I sewed myself some reusable pads when I started doing reusable. However, I have been interested in getting something like this for awhile and this was super helpful! Thanks!

A good bit of advice for using cloth pads is getting the fit right. So many of us have come from using disposable pads where you don't get to choose size. If you find your leaking off the front/back or sides it doesn't always mean you need a heavier pad. I leak off the sides and found the length uncomfortable. I worked out I needed a wider, shorter pad. It makes such a difference, and all it takes is contacting the seller to get custom made. Also consider using interlabial pads as boosters if you have a messy flow, they help control the direction of the flow.

Hi Shelbi, I love that you're always so open about your period routine and I'm so glad to have found another person who has never used a tampon! I tried it once many many years ago and I couldn't get it in although it was the smallest size and the experience still kinda haunts me 😅 I've been thinking about starting to use period underwear for a long time but I'm still living with my parents and I'm somehow scared that it will get me in awkward situations when I have to e.g. clean it 🙈

Really appreciate you discussing the more graphic details!! Honestly those things are what I was curious about the most and no one else was talking about it 😘 Using my leftover FSA money to buy a few of my first pair! Makes the most sense for me as a cloth diapering mama too haha.

I use cloth pads from treehuggers and have had a great experience with the product and customer service. I have a wet/dry bag I kept them in and I just put them in the wash. No more sticky tape waxings (tmi) and I think they hold more and don't move around too much or fold from moving around.

I just got my first cup and set of reusable pads about 10 months ago. I’ve been using the pads at night and cup during the day. Thinking I want to try period underwear at night as I hate the feel of pads, but I like the cup way better than tampons.

As far as soaking them. Maybe its similar to what I was taught since I started bleeding. My mom taught me that its easier to get the "stain" out if it never dries versus if the clothing dries and then you try to get it out. In my experience, it's true. We just use water in a bucket too.

Agreed. Dried blood is really hard to get out 😬 if it never dried in the first place, it should wash out pretty easily

I love my Thinx! I’ve had three periods with period underwear after using pads for almost 20 years (first one I used Knix) and I typically change them twice on heavy days and once on light days. I don’t use them with any other products and I haven’t leaked. My only regret is not getting them sooner. I haaaaaate disposable pads and I tried tampons and cannot use them. Disclaimer I do take birth control to have more control of when I get my period and my periods have definitely been more manageable and lighter since starting birth control. Knix is really nice too, but I love the styles and coverage with Thinx more. Honestly Knix works perfectly fine; I just feel cuter and safer in Thinx.

Menstrual cups didn't work for me because my pelvic floor muscles are so strong the cup doesn't form a seal; tampons are hell; and regular pads give me rashes, feel like a diaper and they STINK - all this is to say, period underwear was my only option. But boy, even if they were not my last resort, I would still use them because it's made my period so much more comfortable. Thinx underwear is comfortable, stylish and I feel really secure in them. I wear mostly the cheeky ones and find that they hold up really well, even on my heavy days (despite my flow being rather heavy). I've found that they can even hold up an entire day during a heavy day as long as the blood comes out slow and steadily, so with time for the underwear to dry. It is only if the floodgates open and a hell of a lot comes out suddenly (+ clots), that I've experienced a leak. Other than that, they work like a charm for me, do not smell nor do they feel wet. My only issue with them: they're expensive and as someone living in Europe, shipping costs and import tax add up to quite the price point. For those living in the EU like me, I can also highly recommend cooliea. Not as many style choices, but they are very similar to Thinx and can even withstand sudden influx of blood with big clots, so in that sense they surmount Thinx in my experience. Personally I have not used Modibodi but I've heard great things about those too so that might also be an option if you live in Europe. Anyway, that's my Spiel, I hope it's helpful! (also, I'm not going to apologize for the TMI because let's normalize talking about bodies and periods, haha :P)

I use knix and thinx-I prefer knix but I think I bought too small for thinxs-and I like that better, use it as backup to the SALT SOFT cup. I work 24 hour shifts and if using period underwear as a backup I have never ever had an issue besides in month 1 and 2. I use the same pair as a backup all day. There’s a little bit of a learning curve i would advise having your first month or two to try it at home but I cannot stand disposables anymore, they smell like you said and I notice more cramping actually!

Also I don’t soak and only rinse if I wasn’t wearing a cup. I wash in a laundry bag with my other laundry and air dry. Never an issue!

I just got my IUD out after 6 years. During that time I basically didn't have a period. I'm wanting to let my body return to its normal cycle, but man that been a rude awakening! 😒 So I'm currently using tampons but am observing my cycle so I can get the right menstral cup. Anyone use the Saalt cup and underwear? I also have 3 daughters, one who is getting closer to that age. Looking forward to providing her with better tools than I had!

I use an awesome brand of period underwear called Lady Days. They are legit the comfiest pants I have ever worn and they're a small, eco-friendly, woman-owned business that's local to me. I highly recommend any UK-based people looking for period pants check them out! They're cheaper than some of the bigger brands available in the UK too

I use modibodi in Australia they last all day if I want they go up to 24hrs and can be used for incontinance. I can never feel them and never leak if I’m not in pain I can forget I’m on my period first time in my life I’m uncomfortable. There’s not many brands in Australia for people over size 14. I can go through a super tampon in 2-3hrs

Stupid question, but break it down for me. If you need to change these in public, do you really take your pants off in the bathroom to switch it? Like, of course you have to. But, like, having to take a full pair of underwear off is hanging me up.

I usually use period underwear because I hate having to insert stuff when I'm menstruating. It's painful and particularly tampons are so drying 😭 I used to have a menstrual cup for swimming and when my period underwear are all in the wash buuuuut my friends dog found it and destroyed it 😅 so I'm back to organic cotton tampons for backup when I need them haha

There isnt suppose to be a foul smell. Blood has odor yes but foul period smell if because u arent changing them enough. That’s literally bacteria buildup. Never had that problem. Just keep changing and shower everyday there should he absolutely no smell.

I am on Birth control and have a lighter period. I only have a period for 2-3 days and I have 6 I think I have to wash them at the end. In the beginning, I usually have 2-3 a day and then it gets to just 2 (for night and day). I've never had an issue. I have leaked before but it was my fault I wore a light one for the first day of my period on accident but the blood got out and it was all good. If I'm going to be out for a while I use a disc or cup since the 12hrs without changing it is a no-brainer for me convince-wise. Also, I've never had a smell unless I was working out. I've worn them running and there was a bit of a smell but that was definitely sweat.

When I take a shower, I rinse them in the shower and let them air dry. For stubborn period stains I soak them in an oxygen cleaner (like oxyclean or nellies). Also if you have a FSA account you can buy some thing underwear in the FSA store.

I don't soak my period undies, if I'm having a really hard day sometimes I don't even rinse tbh which may be gross but hey if I'm halfway dead from cramps I'm not gonna kick myself over taking the easy way.

I use cloth pads. I change them a lot 😅. Not necessary because of a heavy flow but because of feeling more clean. That's why period underwear didn't convince me. Just the thought to remove my trousers everytime i would change them sounds too much 😂 Yes they can move thats why u need to test which shape of underwear holds them in place 😊I am on my 3 year now. No leak so far 😊

I have used thinks and on my heaviest day I use Two and most days I only have to use one. Though I will say I do typically have to change my period underwear after some nights. I have the medium flow ones. Mainly the sports and the and the regular hiphugger. I currently have 5 pairs and I have to wash them about halfway through my period. So If I had like 7 I wouldn't have to wash them at all during my period.
