I sometimes use strip flashing that I cut from same color material as the gutter. I put it under the flashing drip edge and in side the gutter on top of the hangers. No more water behind the gutter, problem solved! Works for me.

Typically if you have an issue with water leaks behind the gutter it's because the roofer has cut your shingles too short a quick fix for this is counter flashing under the drip edge to divert the water into the gutter this was an idea the owner of the gutter company I work for came up with for this exact problem

If I already have my gutters up and there is drip edge problem, I will just get some outdoor rated adhesive and attach a thin layer to the underside tip of the shingle. This will prevent that backflow and the water will fall directly down. Easier than fiddling with some other installation and it takes about as long. Gorilla glue works great and stops that backflow but it is a bit tedious.

My roof has a furring strip, a 1x2, behind the drip edge all attached to the facia. There's no gutter yet. Would the high end of the gutter go below that furring strip? How would the exposed wood, the bottom of the furring strip, be protected from the water? The roof has clay Spanish tiles.

I moved to an old ranch home last fall and noticed stuff growing in my gutters. I just this week got around to tackling the job of cleaning out my gutters. I only got as far as cleaning out the gutter on the back of the house when I realized an even bigger problem. ALL of the fascia boards the entire length of the back of the house are wet, spongy and rotted beneath the quick coat of paint the previous owners threw on to sell the house. The gutter was quite old, and bent/warped in a couple of places and was actually installed OVER the drip guard edge so that the rain coming off the roof mostly just dripped down the fascia board instead of going into the gutter. No wonder it was all rotted! I'm a DIY'er and live alone so I'll have to tackle all this repair by myself. I spent one afternoon and got the 54' of gutter taken down (I cut it in half while it was still attached to the house to make the two sections a little easier to remove). I didn't want to pry the old damaged fascia boards off until I had the new ones ready to go up. I bought the 1" x 6"s for the fascia replacement boards and spent anther day painting them in my garage. Now I'm ready to pry the old fascia boards off, but I assume I'll need to remove the old drip guard that is attached to them first? I have no clue what I'm doing here but I live on Social Security and can't afford to pay to have the work done. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

After reading it sounds like you should have no problems with accomplishing the job. You sound like you know what you are talking about. I have videos on most of what you are completing. For the drip edge I would not remove unless you have to, normally this does NOT have to be removed to replace the fascia. Once complete let me know how it turned out, Thanks Jimmy:)

Hi E.G. I just had a new gutter installed at my house, and a inspector said the drip edge is installed in front of the gutter and should be installed behind the gutter. I heard what you said but can you reverify this?🤔

E.G. if you install the gutter In front of the drip edge, what would be a couple of solutions to prevent the water going behind the gutter? Maybe applying sealant so the water won’t travel behind gutter? Thank you in advance!

The problem with my gutter is that once it gets water in it the rain is splashing into it and splashing back on the fascia board and dripping behind the gutters. It does it on all my gutters. I have been on a ladder in the rain watching this happen. This is the 2nd set of gutters by 2 different companies in a year and they both did the same thing. Roof has a low pitch but at the top of fascia board is a 1x2" with drip edge and the gutters mounted flush to the fascia board so there is basically a 1" gap between the drip edge and the inside edge of the back of the gutters. Any suggestions?

My gutter is behind the drip edge but my problem is that the water is leaking from under the drip edge and travelling down behind the gutter.

How then do you install the hanger if the drip edge covers the back side of the gutter? The hanger needs to be clipped on to the house side edge of the gutter and screwed to the fascia board. And do I now screw through both the drip edge and gutter or will that promote leaks? Basically, can you explain the fastening?

Note never go threw the drip edge! Remember the drip edge is there to deflect the water from going behind the gutter. I will make a video for this:)

Hello. On my roof, which has no gutter yet, there appear to be a 1x2" ferring strip behind the drip edge, which is then attached to the facia board. The drip edge is galvanzied metal. Is it ok to place the gutter under that ferring strip? do i need an additional flashing to run over that exposed wood and behind the drip edge? Thanks! great videos.
@Everythinggutter
@Everythinggutter 7 жыл бұрын
Yes the gutter can be placed under the herring strip no additional flashing is needed. Remember the drip edge is not there to seal the wood only to divert the water from going behind the gutter or possible behind the fascia. I personally if able would mount the gutter on the herring strip sliding the gutter behind the drip edge. I have done this several times, looks much better, Thanks Jimmy:)

Steel roof with drip edge very tight on the steel fascia trim. The hangers won't fit even if the edge was bent out. See no way to aesthetically bend the drip edge? Add another under the roof steel?

No drip edge needed in this case just install the gutter as close to the edge of the roof as possible!

Hi. I just got a metal roof installed. Had a gutter guy come out and install 6" gutters. The gutters are in front of the drip edge. He claimed that you never "peel" a metal roof drip edge. I have alittle bit of leaking through the gutter...he caulked these areas. Is this correct?

Hope you find this. Metal roof 6:12, snow guards, Drip edge 3" over 2x6 fascia board. I don't see way to remove drip as attached under metal roof & is matching thickness to roof metal & not enough space to add a wider fascia board. Conflicting info from potential installers about just about everything (except agree hidden hangers) & that metal roofs drain faster than shake. Have 4 non connected sections of 12' each with that slope. One says real high as water flows so fast off metal roof & need to catch it. One place gutter behind but fasten on top of drip edge & thru gutter into fascia. Other behind but cut drip. Web info states to have outside edge gutter in slope line of roof so straight edge resting on roof just touch top of gutter. We do get snow from time to time & guards should help but certainly don't want snow to knockoff the gutters or for the water flow to miss the gutters (we do get some very heavy downfalls). Finances dictate DIY 5" gutter install (fortunate to have found 16' pieces) tucked under drip (necessary or gutter would be lower than fascia) & the slope makes it so high point of gutter just enough above bottom fascia to allow proper slope to drain pipe without hanging below fascia & gutter will still be tucked well under drip edge. Questions. 1) how high 2) fasten thru or cut up the drip edge as the fastners won't allow gutter placed high enough. Will value your input in this matter & any other issue you might see in this. Thank you.

From the details given it will not be possible to give you the best advice or even point you in that direction. I would prefer a video in this case emailed over. Include the roof with your thoughts in the video, Thanks Jimmy:( PS - just a note if you have a metal roof no drip edge is required. The roof is the drip edge, as long as the gutter is installed as close to the edge as the roof as possible:)

I'm an installer I always tuck behind the drip edge but sometimes screwing through the drip edge pulls the drip edge down causing the shingles to curl up...should I notch every 2 feet for my hangers?
@Everythinggutter
@Everythinggutter 7 жыл бұрын
Never screw into or threw the drip edge, try and lift the drip edge up to screw the hangers into place. Sometimes the wrong drip edge is installed on the home and that will not be possible. There are times that you will have to notch the drip edge. The drip edge will have to be altered(notched) when it effects the shingle in anyway. Keeping in mind the purpose of the drip edge and that is to direct the water from the edge of the roof into the gutter eliminating the water from going behind the gutter!

Everything Gutter, I always tuck the gutter and alot of gutter apron is 3 inches and some drip edges are 2 inches. I'm not the only installer that screws through the drip edge in my area. is your main concern with screwing through drip edge the possibility of water wicking up between gutter and drip edge and getting behind the gutter? seems like a slim to no possibility of that happening. I think as long as it is tucked it should be fine...

I'll try bending out of the way next time I encounter this certain drip edge. may have to hang the gutters a little lower at the start.

Hi Reid, Knowing about the drip edge, its function and proper installation even if another way works. Prevent future issues, future roof replacement possible gutter replacement. This could cause allot of damage to the drip edge if not properly installed. Better to install the most efficient way with as less damage to the drip edge as possible. You never want the drip edge attached to the gutter in anyway always free floating. The drip edge should always be able to be easily be removed without effecting the gutter and vise versa:)
@Everythinggutter
@Everythinggutter 7 жыл бұрын
I would recommend you try not to hang the gutter lower if possible. Most times you will find you won't have to.The installation will take longer althought the installation will look much better. See past replies for more details!
