My growth of 401k is 2.74% in the past year. In this environment does investing under a brokerage with a custodian outperform a 401k? should I seek a pro to grow my funds on brokerage acct or still hold? I have 5 years to retirement. Happy to discuss.

Dollar cost averaging is the secret to buying etf's. Buying on a regular monthly / quarterly basis removes the worry of timing the market. The only issue i have with VOO and QQQ is the current price. There are cheaper options around which allow the average Joe to invest. There are great chepaer etf's out there like IXN, XLG, SPLG. There are also some high flying etf's like PSI (semiconductors) which have insane returns over the last 10 years (and are under $50).

Using a similar strategy.... Keep money in bond fund. Say TLT. ....and keep moving a fixed amount every month to QQQ. .....and when VIX crosses 25 double the fixed amount that month and if VIX crosses. 30. .....10 times the monthly amount to be moved. ( very difficult to do that when VIX crosses 30 )

I think the biggest fear a person has when they get closer to retirement age is how to protect their assets they've worked hard for their entire careers. The risk factor becomes much lower and now you just want to make sure you don't lose everything if there is a recession. This is where I struggle. How to generate income once I finally cash out my 401k. I have about 7 years to go, but planning ahead is crucial. I know I'm not alone. I'm wondering the safest place to stash a cash-out fund, yet still generate income from the capital. Do you have any videos that discuss this topic? I not, that might be an excellent video just to get ideas. An income-driven portfolio for us older folks.

@Kenster-man
@Kenster-man 6 ай бұрын
True but FTEC is pure Tech - which is ok if that's what you want. QQQ/QQQM is only about 50% Tech and so it's somewhat more diverse. For example - Amazon, Google and Facebook/Meta aren't in FTEC because they're not "Tech" companies but they're big top 10 holdings in QQQ/QQQM. So depending on what you have in your portfolio and if you want to overweight say the Magnificent 7 holdings beyond VOO --- then QQQ/QQQM provides that coverage whereas FTEC doesn't. But if want to specifically target just Tech companies then sure FTEC or VGT could work.

I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I agree, that's the more reason I prefer my day to day investment decisions being guided by an advisor seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not out-perform, been using my advisor for over 2years+ and I've netted over 2.8million.

Although QQQ has done very well --- it's about risk & balance. QQQ only invests in the 100 largest non-financial stocks trading on the NASDAQ. So having some VOO helps diversify - where you'll get stocks included like Visa, Mastercard, etc. Plus QQQ is more volatile - it went down harder than most funds last year in 2022.

Why not just invest ONLY in QQQ as a dollar cost average instead of using the money on VOO? Seems to me that VOO will only weigh the QQQ return down.
@Kenster-man
@Kenster-man 6 ай бұрын
That is true but it's about the future now and the risk/reward you're willing to take. QQQ is more narrow - it invests in the largest 100 non-financial stocks trading on the Nasdaq. If you want to put it all on QQQ but can you handle the wild roller coaster ride? QQQ is more volatile --- did you see how much it went down in 2022? If an investor feels that strongly about QQQ - you can still overweight it. I still feel confident in the top Megacap stocks in QQQ but at the same time I know their valuations are quite stretched.
@ElCangri137
@ElCangri137 6 ай бұрын
@Kenster-man Yes, but even with the 2022 correction, QQQ is still outperforming VOO. VOO's top 7 companies are the very same 7 of the QQQ. If tech outperforms financials, why should I want my money in financials? And when I look through the QQQ, it isn't all tech. It's quite diverse. Just me looking at the math, I don't find the logic in investing in VOO at all, if we know QQQ will outperform it. And Easy Money is clearly acknowledging they expect it will continue to do so, or they wouldn't had given the advice to DCA it as a mean to outperform the market. If we want to outperform the market by ADDING QQQ, then why not outperform it outright with it and not VOO weighing it down?
