9 years ago my Father in law gave me a single jade leaf from his giant 30 year old plant and told me to stick it in a pot of dirt. I did that and I've made hundreds of jades out of that one leaf and sell them every summer. I tell people all the time how I got started and everyone I tell is just amazed. 😃

Trust me I felt the very same way. I thought I was going to kill it and that was it. These plants respond so well to pruning....you virtually can't go wrong. It will regrow. Hi! I have a tall skinny jade since 2017 with only 2 long stems with a bunch of single leaves on each of them. Never realized until I watched some of your videos that I should prune it. At that point it was almost 9” high, and leaning over. A few months ago I made a cutting off the top of each stem and planted them in the soil and they are growing great. I would like to get some branching out further down each stem however if possible so the weight gets spread out and it won’t lean. If I cut or snap off an individual leaf off each stem lower down (like where the leaves start at the lowest spot on each stem), will they branch out from those spots, or just dry up where I do that? If it won’t branch out from those spots, I may have no choice but to make another cutting further down each stem, otherwise in time this guy will get super heavy and fall over! Please help. Thanks! 😊

When do you pot the ones with the leaves into their own pots? My jade has not been reported in years. Should I repot the whole thing before I prune it? Great video!
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 3 жыл бұрын
I basically remove them when the original leaf dries up on the new plant.

I wish I’d watched this before planting my branch cutting. I think it’s only half an inch in the soil. I didn’t think to cut off more leaves so I could plant it deeper. The bottom two leaves are keeping it from toppling over, so it’s probably just hanging on for dear life 😂 i’ll have to try and fix that. It seems pretty healthy though, it’s been growing like crazy.

If it isnt rooted or even slightly rooted then yank it out, cut off a few leaves if you want and place it back into the soil. It will not harm the plant.

Everything Plants Thank you for your response. I planted it back in January. If I take it out to cut the leaves and replant it deeper, will I need to wait a few days for the leaf cuts to callus over?
@EverythingPlants

The correct answer is yes, but honestly I don't wait and have never had an issue. Cut it and plant it. Haha

Do you mean taking a cutting from a small plant? As long as there is a node for a small stem it should be fine. I've never tried it with a young leaf. Is this what you mean?

Just want to clarify, you either use rooting hormone or let the fresh cut area scab over. I that right? Thanks.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it really matters. I've used it on a fresh cut and a calloused cut.

Can I propagate them in water after letting them callous? Also, do I need to scrape the vertical area(the part where we tear off the extra leaves) where it will develop roots? Thanks for the great video though!🌱🌵😊
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 4 жыл бұрын
I've never had good success propagating succulents in water compared to soil. You can try placing it in water but i can not guarantee the outcome. I should still grow roots in theory even if it has calloused over already.

I would lightly water orbmist only the soil when I notice the soil is dry. Maybe once a week or so.

I have a very leggy jade. I just learned that it needs more light. How short should I prune it back? Its probably a foot tall in total with a cluster of leaves on the top 2-3 inches, so very leggy 😔
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 4 жыл бұрын
I think the general rule for pruning Jades is no more then 20% of the plant, but experiment with it. You should get two branches from where you prune so just imagine how the plant will look after you prune it.

I've recently just got a jade plant seedling from my neighbour! It's got one little root and is doing alright. How long do you think it would take to grow a stem, so that it doesn't just look like a little leaf in the soil 😅

Assuming you have a stem cutting....I leave the soil dry for about a week and then lightly water when the soil is dry. It should root in a couple weeks.

Yes. Although I've never cut a larger branch or stem before the process should all be the same. Once it gets a bit closer to spring I do have a larger Jade branch that I will be pruning off. I will be replanting that one as well.

Nope, I keep mine dry. As long as the stem and leaves are healthy then no extra care or watering is needed. I'd say give it a week or so then give it some water and don't water again until it is completely dry.
