I just realized one of the biggest reasons I loved Vanilla WoW. Zones didn't feel like road bumps while leveling up through them. Every new zone was like adventuring through a small country, spending a large portion of time measurable by calendar actually dedicating myself to whatever cause there. Nowadays leveling through a zone might as well be a day trip by comparison. There's no investment in the zones like the extensive amount of time invested into Stranglethorn back then.

There never was much investment. I'd say the lore of each zone is better today. It's just that everything was new to you, so you remember it fondly, while now you got sick and tired of it.

I want classic to be the way it was in everything except one thing. The graphics I want them to be updated to what they are in BFA. They still havent updated any of the old zones to WoD Legion BFA levels thats it.

@@topanteon i disagree. As a literal Cata baby I always felt like I couldn’t stand leveling cus it felt like nothing but a hurdle to the actual game which was the late game. Ive been playing wow classic casually and having a ton of fun on my Tauren hunter. I feel invested in the zones because I know that is actually part of the game. In cata and beyond leveling to me at least always felt like a mindless hurdle because lets be real its so damn easy. You never have to be careful and pull certain numbers of mobs so the challenge is never in the actual gameplay. That 30 second gameplay loop of actually being satisfying just isn’t there which I think is really imp cus that keeps you invest in upgrades. I’m literally at work right now and I’m going through my head thinking over what I’m gonna do next on my hunter today cus I actually have to strat out so I don’t get owned on my next quest. To me that is far more satisfying.

in addition to that you would get quests for dungeons that you knew gave so much exp and a chance to get items that you just had to do it and had to look for people, you legit had to write to someone: Hi, wanna do SM ? now I q up, don't speak get an item that im gonna replace on the next quest

cutscenes should be rare and rewarding. The first WoLK cutscene is perfect. It comes at the end of a long quest chain, and for your work, you get to see the one and only cutscene of the expansion, and it's a clear game changer for progressing the story of WoLK

Hey Asmongold. I started playing WoW during TBC with soldiers from my US Army unit. I'll never for get one time raiding Kara, and two of the players were Army husband and wife. The husband was a main tank and the wife played a hunter. The wife was in charge of keeping mons trapped (of course) and kept letting her mpns get free, killing the raid so we kicked her out and found another hunter. Well she told her husband, our main rank that she would divorce him if he didnt leave the raid too. He didnt and she actually divorced him. How many other game have inspired people's passion so much it could literally cause a divorce?

The thing is that Blizzard made foreshadowing for so many instances that were planned and never done in vanilla. Think about Uldum... and great Uldaman quest about it. Same with Caverns of time that you become familiar with while doing AQ quests and AQ20/40 instances. Karazhan and Medivh story when doing Atiesh and corrupted Ashbringer events. Vaelstraz that hints about Grim Batol. And all these instances that have their entrances that tease you ..... look there is something....

obeybosss yet instead of adding that content to vanilla they decided to milk us for another $60 an release content in an xpac. TBC was great an I had my best wow time then, but the raising of the level cap an making 60 content irrelevant was a bad move imo.
@obeybosss

@@rogue5861 In an interview back in the days some dev said that they had 2 ideas of developing wow. Paid content patches or EXpacks and Expacks only if the game will hit 1mil + subscribers. They really didn't think that it will be so popular. Right now it is easliy can be done with DLC paid patches BUT the original developers were gone through vanilla. Even Naxx content was partially designed by different people and i really hate that switch in naxxramas itemization philosophy. I really think that patch 1.13 is the way to go after all of the content is cleared BUT would current developers be able to do everything right? i don't think so.

obeybosss who knows if they will get it right, but its not about getting it right. Its about keeping to the lore and not making old raids irrelevant imo. If you still need to progress through all the raids before you can move into the new ones that would be great. Blizzard make great raids in retail atm, but its the fact the game as a whole is hollow.

@@rogue5861 for example. I was giving flying f*cks about lore all the way. The game need to be consistent, itemization should be balanced and done properly. IMO TBC was already a ton of crap from many different perspectives. All those vectors of development that were introduced in TBC have led to modern wow.
@rogue5861

Its background story telling and the best comparison I can make is to the Soul games that don't have up front narratives. The story of Vanilla is that its 4 years after the events of Warcraft 3, the Alliance Horde truce is over and everyone just goes back to their side of the fence. Every zone is about basically cleaning up the world that almost ended because of a demonic invasion/zombie plague. Whatever story there is, is portrayed through quest text. Retails problem is that there's too much narrative, to the point where its intrusive to gameplay. Every patch is the same. New area opens, we follow NPCs around while they talk, we establish a foothold in front of the raid entrance then we do the raid. The game vomits its narrative on you in chunks and you feel like a spectator for the npcs despite doing 100% of the work. Back in 2004 this game was praised for having next to no gameplay interruptions. You could run from one end of a content to another and never see a loading screen outside of an instance or hearthstone. Also there were 0 cutscenes.

It is my dream that blizzard goes back in time and has an epiphany for whats really made vanilla the greatest MMO ever created. I want them to start it all over again, and turn classic into an OSRS scenario, where it has its own branch of content updates. Let's do it again boys, and lets do it the right way this time.

What I think that happen to WoW was that younger generation of game developers and designers step in. Classic WoW has that feeling of DnD (even tho I never played those), board games etc. that made you use your imagination also while playing. Then younger ones game who had been playing with nintendo and sega and playstation for their childhood and wants instant satisfaction basicly from story and quests and loot. More loot, stronger loot, epic color loot. etc. so story and gameplay in that sense was left behind. :( My 2cents!

I don't know, D&D has only become more and more popular over time and those game devs who designed classic weren't that old, the oldest among them probably grew up with arcade machines and commodore 64 which are the epitome of instant gratification. Imagination games never really went out of style in nerd circles.

Did they have a quest helper addon in vanilla? I seriously cant remember.

For me, as far as feeling like I made a difference was the phasing after quest completion they did in Wrath. Where for instance the area around Dun Niffleheim changed as you did the sons of Hodir quests. To me that's how it should work. If you're questing in an area and find out the mobs are actually demons...then at that point the mobs should change to various demons as opposed to staying static. That makes it seem as though the world is changing as you learn more about what's going on. Also, Pandaria wasn't established Lore. They took an obscure OP class from Warcraft 3 and based an entire expansion around that 1 brewmaster.

The graph part, top half is story and narrative based on the world and lore. Bottom half is the fact that it's just the players story that's guided by the world instead of the world story guided by players moving through it. Basicalls top is the world exists and you pass through it, the bottom is the game is for YOUR character to travel through because you are the story.

Dude is spot on and I'm going to relate it to the OG of MMOs too, Evercrack. That game was based on MUDs...Multi User Dungeons, aka Dungeons & Dragons. I felt the same way in early World of Warcraft. I don't know if it was intentionally MUD-based but I had to explore in the same way. It was such a pain in the balls to do quests so I really respected people who could follow through and finish them. I knew I could never have what they had because I wasn't willing to put in the work. I really hope classic World of Warcraft continues making everything a pain in the balls because if they only kinda/sorta make it like Vanilla WoW they just killed their game before it even takes off. There is literally no old-school MMO on the market. Sure, there are private servers and some company still runs EQ, but neither is classic OG game-play. DON'T SCREW THIS UP BLIZZARD GAMERS WILL HATE YOU FOREVER. THEY WON'T FORGET AND THAT WILL BE YOUR LEGACY.

You had the argent crusade quest lines out there, fighting armies of undead. Plus the storyline to it was very idk how to put it, I just liked it? Thought the storyline behind it all very well developed. Plus I feel like everyone were just doing so much stuff. All day people would be raiding the hord for the, For the Alliance! Achievement. Tons were at the tournament grounds to get there mounts and gears, it was a very fun experience for me. And WoW felt very alive with many running around everywhere. Not saying it's not gonna feel alive on vanilla, because I'm sure it will having tons of people flow into at the start, but WoTL was definitely well designed in my opinion.

Clasic is definitly a good game. but not the best patch. that would be BC. has almost the same dificulty curve but is a lot more FAIR, and offers more. Dual spec, class spec viability, flying in the new zone while keeping the old one pristine, profesion usefulness, and faction identity while alowing everyone everything. Wotlk is decent with more content but gets more easier. And when you then went back to Azeroth, you wasnt in the same realm as the Classics one, so the catalysm could happend and all the S**t. So you are not forced to lvl up, and still chuse (choose? Any way) to play the the old game, and not get fucked up by 60 twinks, that have Blue 60 gear that are bether then 60 Purple. Just my though after watching this.

As much as I love the in-game storytelling, I don't understand why people hate on the books so much? There is so much information and story that can only be conveyed through writing, and people just want to ignore it because they think reading is boring or hard (at least that's what it seems like to me). I have enjoyed the story of the Warcraft universe from Warcraft: Orcs and Humans all the way to World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, reading all the books and novellas along the way.

Imho, every major aspect of the plot should be discoverable within the game, one way or another. Intricacies of the storytelling can be safely kept to the books, but one should not be required to go out of their way to learn ingame lore from a third party source. Not to mention there are already many book objects within the world of the game through which the story can be conveyed.

Spitballing, I'd say it's because it makes it a little more engaging. You can't click it, go pick your nose and come back when its done. You need to keep interacting with it to get the loot. It also makes the loot reveal more interesting. You discover how much loot you're going to get from it bit by bit instead of all at once. I honestly remember the feeling from back in the day when you'd start mining an ore deposit and you'd have looted it 2-3 times, which was fairly standard, but it hadn't faded yet so you keep clicking it. And keep clicking it... and it just keeps on coming, and you're thinking "Holy shit. This ore deposit is fucking massive! I'm going to be rich!" And you'd end up looting it like 6-7 times, filling up a whole stack of ore and walk away with a big dumb grin on your face.

Part of the reason why I stopped playing WoW is because they fucked up the Lore. I got out before the game really shit on itself, but I still came back for a bit for Legion. Fucking love Demon Hunters. Best thing they created.

Quest helper destroyed wow for me. I was actually trying to figure out what to do. But then at some point I saw some people just go to specific locations because they KNEW where to go and what to do. So then I learned about Quest Helper. And my leveling went much faster. But since then I stopped even reading the quests. And this way I stopped paying attention to what actually is going on in the game, what is the story, what am I doing in this location, why am I even trying to kill that boss? It didnt matter that much, because Quest Helper did everything for me. I saw some people play Classic with addons and if they are plannig on allowing addons like Quest Helper I think Classic will fail.
@trignite
@trignite 5 жыл бұрын
Even on retail before quest-helpers I'd just quickly scan for the location i need to go I paid pretty much 0 attention to the lore and even when I cleared BWL i had no clue about any of the lore behind the raids i had done. Quest Helpers were just a faster way for me to find where to go. Before people used thottbot now people have it ingame. I can see the added convenience making less people read the quests. But people who weren't going to read them anyway aside from quickly scanning for a location aren't affected. Vanilla is my favorite but still, i never gave a crap about the lore aside from snippets of boss dialogue etc.

17:55 - BULLSHIT. Pandaria wasn't established lore, it's based on a fucking joke NPC from a secret level in W3. If anything Pandaria would be rock bottom, and WOD would be 3/4 down. Legion as well, by and large. Anyway, by the time they ressed Onyxia just to make her a punching bag, they showed that they were off the lore track. gg.

I liked being a cog in the machine, a big reason to dislike WOD. My ego did not need every NPC in my garrison to salute me as I passed. Its a lie because its not possible for a player to make any real changes within the game world and so we cannot truly be heroes in the game. Khadgar kept sending you to break your neck while he twiddled his thumbs. And you knew all the while he could smash them with a spell. I did not like Blizzard killing off Admiral Taylor for an inconsequential quest hub. Blizz likes to say Azeroth is a character in itself, but its the NPC who give that world a voice and personality. Its the NPC that make you care and invest in the story. I still don't know why Blizzard found it necessary to kill Varian Wyrnn. I farmed way too many apples for his cider to let that go so easily. He welcomed my DK and my panda into the alliance. All of my toons still keep the Seal of Wrynn in their banks, that ring from an early quest chain. That was big moment for me back in the day. I still mourn for Southshore, Theramore, and Loch Modan. I will be glad to see them good as new in Classic and to see Varian live again.

While I agree on almost everything, I don't understand why ppl loathe cinematics. Cinematically, WoD was very enjoyable. It's the player-driven stories modern WoW lacks.
@Exeeter1234
@Exeeter1234 5 жыл бұрын
Its because story driven in game cinematics is a form of forcing a narrative down the players throat vs letting a narrative develop organically over time. Cutscenes can help portray major events in a more detailed perspective but in wow by the time cutscenes went ham, players were placed at the center of these major events.

@visraider3992
@visraider3992 5 жыл бұрын
Player driven story is not story. Story is scripted, and player actions in a video game are not scripted. Outside of roleplaying, there is no way to make a player-driven narrative because you wouldn't be able to create the relevant content around it. It's misleading to think that at any point in WoW the player has had any impact considering that the story is already written and you are essentially filling in the role of the generic footsolider being told by the actual characters in the story (NPCs) what to do.

Nah. Nobody gave a fuck about the story telling back then either. The whole thing about Heroic/Legendary gear and weapons is true. Lets be for real about what killed that. TRANSMOG. Tmog killed a big part of the game and lots of people would quit the game if they took it away. However it made a big part of the game irrelevant because now your character can look cool no matter if you play at a high level or not.

I was thinking to myself that Dark Souls had the same appeal in that you're literally a nobody, and 10 seconds later he just says it straight up. It's such a good dynamic to build yourself on, I don't think anything appeals to me more in a video game than being disadvantaged as a character.
