Thank you so much for doing this video. I have been an EVH fan since I was 15. And when this came out everyone was doing the djent and chugging stuff and I said to myself “ok I don’t play that stuff this is not an amp I want”. Thank you for showing it is great for the stuff I like to do which is 80s stuff. So I may reconsider it

I bought both the EL34 and the 6L6 last Saturday. I set them both up next to my JCM 800 and I have to say, the EL34 gets pretty close to the JCM 800 tone on the green channel with overdrive on and drive set about 2. With a TS9 Tube Screamer in front of it with level dimed, tone at 12 o'clock and drive at 0. Eq Settings were Low at 8, mid 4, trebbile 8, resonance 2, Prescence 6. Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 12 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavvier stuff. I don't like the burn button, it is just way to much. I also running a CE5 Stero chorus, HOF Reverb, FlahBack2 delay and a EH 720 Looper in the effects loop and do not use the amp reverb. In front I am running Les Paul Custom Shop into a TU2 tunner, into Boss 200EQ to better shape the tone, into Morley Mark Tremonti Wah, then to TS9, SD1 and OC5 Octave. Last in Chain is NS2 Noise gate. The EQ pedal allows you to refine the tone really well. After 5 days of having both, I settled on the EL34 and returned the 6L6. The El34 is just a little more reminiscent of the classic Marshall tone. A bit warmer, and not as harsh as the 6L6. If I was a hardcore metal player, then the 6L6 would have been my choice. For me, the EL34 is a winner. And I forgot to mention the clean channel. Same EQ settings, but I do have a dedicated eq channel on the boss EQ 200 just for clean that gives probably the best clean tone I have ever heard from any amp. I have a fender twin reverb, and a 1977 Roland Jazz Chorus 120 I usually A-B with my JCM 800 for cleans, and the tone I got out of the EL34 with the eq pedal, is surprisingly better. No need for me to lug multiple amps to the gig now. Being a diehard vintage amp snob, I was very reluctant to give this a try. But wow!! I am glad I did. The vintage stuff can stay at home now where it is safe, and this will now be my gigging amp. Less to haul around to achieve great tones all in one head versuses A-B ing 2 amps, two mics in front and two channels to dial in on front of house board. This is a win for me. Never thought I would say this, and immediatley hated it until I gave it a try. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. PS: I spent about 6 hours total, tone shapping with EQ 200 to each specific channel to achieve the tones I finally dig. TS9 on Green Channel with Overdrvive engaged, and SD1 for Red Channel no burn button. The burn will never be used. And one final tweak, I removed the front grill and took off the 5150 and EVH logo and put behind the grill. Looks a lot better estetically. Now it's a custom lol

Thank you for this! I mostly play 80’s hard rock and wrote this amp off because all the demos I’ve seen so far is just people chugging and playing heavy down tuned modern metal stuff on it. It’s gotten a bit tiring honestly. Your demo was refreshing to hear. I’m gonna try to check it out in person now, really liked the sounds you got. Good to see it nails the 80’s hard rock sounds. Great sounding demo! I think it's funny when people talk about only 2 tubes and comparing to amps that have 5 tubes. Of course, of those 5 tubes, usually one is going to be a phase inverter, you'll have a couple of cathode followers for fx send and return, which leaves what... 2 tubes for gain staging (which is 4 stages of gain). It's almost like they don't even know what amps actually do. :)

Also I love that it has two preamp tubes last overall cost of maintenance in the long run. Especially to somebody new getting into the tube amps who may not quite know the expense of having to buy tubes. Also arguably hopefully it has way less preamp noise. Unlike those evh heads that have an ungodly amount of pre amp noise. So with a good gate out front and one in the loop it should be dead silent

(My fave amp so far) Can you tell by my amps choices since 1992 that I am an Eddie fan? 😂 For those complaining about the preamp being a hybrid solid state and tube design, I say this. QUITCHERBITCHIN! Because the first thing these nu-metallers (or whatever they’re called) do with their all tube preamp amp is slap a solid state overdrive pedal in front of it to get the tone they want. 😂🤣 I guess an Iconic is now in my very near future!

great demo! I recently bought this amp and love it. thanks for the tip on the green channel with OD on 7 for that classic EVH tone quick question, do you keep the amp at full wattage (80) or dialed back at 20% with the accentuator/variac feature. Thanks brother Mike in NJ
@shredaintdead9323 Жыл бұрын

DAMN!! It sounds incredible, but then again I’ve seen you play in person, and everything you play sounds incredible. You could take an 80’s Gorilla 15 watt SS amp and make it sound good. This demo seals the deal I’m going to have to get one. Thanks as always for being to voice of reason on new gear!!

so the demo shows there are 6 different distinct tones the head can make, but it seems we can't footswitch all these? only boost and green/red channel?

So I just picked up a PRS Archon Mk2 50 watt. Awesome amp...BUT I think I might be better off with the Iconic. I felt I had to really push the Archon and max the gain out to get to that modern metal sound I was looking for.
@shredaintdead9323 Жыл бұрын
Sweet amp but this amp is way more versatile and has more gain then anyone could ever need or want.

I like the sound. Do you feel inspired when playing it? When I first played the original Peavey 5150, I felt it in my gut! It made my playing sound better then it was. I got this feeling with a Road King, and a Carvin V3 (correct me if I’m wrong on the Carvin model). There where other more expensive amps I’ve played, but wasn’t inspired by the sound. This is all relative, but I think you know what I’m talking about. Compare it to the Peavey, and the more expensive EVH 5150. Please let me know. This is interesting.

I felt very inspired! The amp actually inspired be to write several of the riffs I put in this demo. It's a great amp with great feel!

Just a quick question Greg, I was looking at voodoo eruption pickup and it seams like the company is not around anymore and also how did you get the pickup to fit because on the Wolfgang you need the pickup to have rounded corners and triangular legs to fit in ????

Nice riffs Gregg! This amp is definitely better than what the naysayers are saying.

It seems like the Iconic hits all the bells and whistles you would want if you were going for that kind of 80's heavy kind of tone, and for the money, how could you go wrong? I'm going for the combo as my next amp, just for the idea of having a 'grab and go kind' of set up. My days of hauling full or even half stacks are long over. Great demo as always my friend!
@shredaintdead93232 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And I totally agree. The combo would be the ultimate grab and go setup!

Hi How well did the noise gate work? I heard you say that was one of the cons. I am not into the Super High gain, which tends to produce way too much hiss.
@shredaintdead93233 жыл бұрын
It works decently well. It's just not as good as most gate pedals. Doesn't completely cut all the noise but does cut most of it.

Nice Demo , Nice Chops , just curious i have the EVH Lbx S like you , how does the sound compare ? I would assume you have more bass response because of the 6l6 vs el-84 power tubes...Also i notice the clean channel is on the break up side , is the lbx s clean channel the same or cleaner ? Im on the fence to buy the Iconic...Thx
@shredaintdead93233 жыл бұрын
Personally l like the lbx just a bit more. Cleaner clean channel and super aggressive and amazing clarity on the red, but the iconic is way more feature and tone packed and full sounding.

This is actually funny I have played the Legacy VL100 for years and i hated the two and didn't feel I needed the extra gain stage of the Legacy 3 and this Iconic is basically the same thing and i bought it after the tone and sounds i could get from it .. I see videos of people saying they would rather have this or its good for the price point but these people don't own one and probably won't own either of the amps they talk about but i bought mine because it can thump, it can play 80's it can play Nu-metal and at the end of the day this is just such a great amp i had to have the Iconic instead of the 6505+ that i was waiting for .. Cool video but at the end of the day you can get great tone and volume out of this amp and it has some even still amazing power at 1/4 power so the moral of my story is I never wanted a EVH and was going to go with the Peavey version from the 6505+ but i am very glad I didn't because this beast is stage ready at 1/4 power ....Enjoy yours if you can everyone , I am thinking of buying another one... LMMFAO

Which is the better, Iconic or EVH lbxs?
@shredaintdead93233 жыл бұрын
I think they're tied. The lbx has a better clean channel and a more aggressive and clear red channel, the iconic has way more features, tones and a much fuller sound. It would be a lot better in a band situation.
