this was such a great story time. Initially, I thought i wanted to pursue forensic science as one of my majors when i go to college. However, lately i’ve been extremely curious and researching lots about mortuary science - especially embalming. I would like to call a local funeral home and ask if I can witness, I am a bit nervous though. I am curious to know If i am strong enough for that career field but i think it would really make me appreciate life more and really bring families peace & closure for their loved ones...

Thanks for the post. I was supposed to witness my first embalming a couple of days ago, but on my way to the funeral home I got a call to do a body removal. I know that excitement that you spoke about. I already work at a funeral home, so know I will get a chance to witness an embalming soon. I'm deciding if I want to go to mortuary science school.

40 years ago I applied for a job transporting bodies from an airport to the funeral home. I was given a tour of the funeral home. I toured the embalming room with no bodies inside and I felt my knees buckle for the first time in my life. I didn’t get the job.

1:29.this is really discouraging to hear. Not knowing the exact date when I could be working a part time job for bills and suddenly having the phone call to immediately rush to the embalmment room is worrying. Anyone know what you would do in this situation?

I know the body needs to be bathed/sanitized. But I've heard about "dignity towels". Will the body be covered after the cleansing and during the embalming process?

Hi Evie 😊 sorry I missed this upload 2 days ago, I had a few things I needed to deal with you. OMG the first thing you saw I’m sure I would maybe have fainted and shocked myself wow how crazy.... guess talk about jumping in with two feet for sure knee deep. It would have been nice of the person to at least let you know that you’d be right in the middle of it geez!!! You’re one tough woman for sure!!! I would love to do the office work billing etc putting out the flowers & helping the funeral home in general it’s doubtful I could deal with embalming for sure. Love you Evie!!! 🤗😊hope you’re doing great today. ~Lucille~

I have never been involved in the funeral industry, but though Evie it seems that it is not what some try to paint it as. I have been around dead people working in law enforcement and even taking a body to the hospital's refrigeration unit until the family could confer with a funeral home for the funeral and burial. I have buried a few family members but that was not in a professional way. I am put at ease when Evie talks about her experiences and think she has wise advice to go see the workings of the funeral industry before pursuing the career. Much the same as some request a ride along with a police officer before going into the police field.

My first experience with witnessing an embalming was a posted case so when I got there she was already laying there with her torso opened up. It did not bother me at all. Maybe there there is something wrong with me. Ps. I loved your intro. I saw alot of familiar worsham faces. I will be graduating from there this September.

Good day! As a mortician, have you totally 100% lost your fear of being around or handling dead people or is there still a part of you that fear them? I mean would you be totally comfortable and still have a good night sleep if you were alone in a room with 10 dead people around you?

Woahhh I’m soooo interested in dead bodies because it’s a complete different reality then ours😅 it’s so interesting but I hate looking at dead bodies🤨 it scares me I feel bad for the person idk what it is but I don’t love death but I love to know what does on before the service
@pig52673 жыл бұрын
@@LifeAboutToya I think the real reason why we are afraid of dead people is because we see ourselves in them. I mean subconsciously we know that someday we are going to end up like them. If I were immortal I dont think I would be afraid of being around dead bodies. This fear is merely the manifestation of our own mortality.

Hi, Evie! I am a college student who has been extremely interested in pursuing mortuary science (after graduating from my current university) for many years. Last year, I visited a locally-owned funeral home/crematory for a tour and discussion about my mortuary school options. Anyway, to get to the point, when I went back into the crematory area, there was a body in the standard cardboard container, but the funeral director/embalmer showing me around was very adamant about not allowing me to even see the body. She ensured it was completely covered, etc, before I was allowed to even walk by. Based on this experience, my question for you is this: When is someone not employed at a funeral home allowed to see a body there? Does this require familial/next-of-kin permission? Is this the choice of the embalmer? Does it have to be an unclaimed body? Do the regulations vary by state for this? I just want to know how it would be possible for me to sit in on an embalming, like you have! Thank you so much, and I'm happy to have found your channel!

I have tried several times to witness an embalming but with no luck. I don't want to pay for Mortuary School and then find I that I can not handle embalmings. What advice would you have?
@EvieVargas4 жыл бұрын
It would be easier to get your foot through the door by becoming a wake attendant or funeral assistant. That will expose you to the profession. Once some time has passed you can ask about witnessing an embalming. Sometimes funeral homes are protective and will refuse to allow it.

I’m suppose to start my mortuary science degree in July! I asked all of my local funeral homes if I could watch also before doing school and none of them will allow me because of hippa laws. Any suggestions ?
@EvieVargas3 жыл бұрын
I would say to get a part time as a funeral assistant. That will get your foot in the door and can lead to witnessing an embalming/ other aspects of the business.

Is anyone able to tell me what the schedule is like for an embalmer/funeral director? Is it always two set days off?

Or does it change?

Depends on the funeral home. When I was full time at one particular funeral home I worked 10 days on and 4 days off. At another I would get every other weekend off. Now I'm freelance so I'm on call..
