Eh, kind of. You're about half right. ED2 is still a sequel. The recap ends right when Ash gets thrown through the forest. From that point, it's a continuation of the first movie. And the recap bit, isn't even an exact retelling of the first film. It's more of a partial recap with only him and his girlfriend. Jus' sayin'.

I have heard from someone explained that each movie Ash is retelling the story differently because of his ego. That each time he retells it he forgets about everyone else except him and his girlfriend. I know about the rights issues that is the real cause, but this would definitely fit Ash's character.

The reason they had to practically remake this movie is because Raimi couldn't get the rights to his first movie, so he decided he would film a recap at the beginning of it. Weird how the industry works haha.

"Who's Laughing Now?" is such a brilliant scene. Campbell has more acting talent in one hand than many actors have in total, the hand's-POV shots across that awful debris-strewn floor are terrific, and the instant Bruce snatches up the chainsaw Joseph DuLoca's excellent score switches to "Oh Yes, We ARE Going There" mode. And then the laughing/screaming/splattering hits us in the feels WAY more than some latex-and-Karo-syrup effect.

The shock at how fast Linda dies at the beginning is why you don't skip movies in a series. It's meant to be an abridged version of the first to set the scene. Also the original was a straight horror with some minor comedic bits whereas this was a pure horror-comedy.

A lot of younger audiences might not 'get' the tone of this movie but it's definitely got its tongue very firmly planted in its own cheek - that's the entire point of the goofy effects and cinematography. Raimi wasn't just going for something different and unique, he wanted to half-lampoon the over-the-top slashers that had pervaded the market at the time. He was gambling that audiences were a little burnt out from having these intense thrillers thrown at them and Bruce had a real flair for the comedic too so it made sense that they would do something a little less serious. That gamble paid off big time, not so much financially but definitely in terms of recognition. Evil Dead was the movie that put Raimi on the map but Evil Dead 2 was the movie that really cemented his value to Hollywood as a director.

It's not a remake, you heard wrong. Only the very beginning of ED2 (with Ash arriving at the cabin) was reshot, because the rights to use footage from ED1 was owned by another studio. If you ignore that part, it picks up right where the last film left off. The same thing happens with Army of Darkness (ED3) You could easily edit the three films together into one long 6 hour epic.

Evil dead 2 is NOT a remake just fyi. They wanted to do a quick recap of the first movie but were not able to get any of the original actors to come back. The part were ash gets picked up and thrown in the forest by the entity is were the second movie actually "starts". And if you remember how the first movie ended, you realize it the second movie picks up exactly where the first one ended.

Good to see you guys laughing more and having a fun time! Shaun's gotta show Tom Army of Darkness sometime soon. It really hadn't occurred to me until Shaun mentioned that this was the "Original Cabin in the Woods" film that Evil Dead 2 owes so much to a 1970 film called Equinox, right down to the cabin the woods, a Book of the Dead, messages on a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and a lot of stop-motion animation. Basically an expanded student film made by guys who would go on to run Industrial Light and Magic. Not saying the boys should watch it, they'd find it a bore, but it is on KZbin if anyone wants to check it out (a rip of the Criterion release...).

The thing with the colored blood - green, or black, and what have you - is Sam Raimi believed he could avoid an X rating if not all the blood was red. He was incorrect. In the end, he may as well have made it all red, but the weird colors, in their way, add to the chaos.

I just rewatched this last week for the first time in forever because theybadded it to Hulu here in the US. I also watched The original and the remake in the same week. To watch the first and then this one, you see how amazing the special effects were (especially on the shoestring budget they had) and how they got even better in this one. And Sam Raimi was barely 21 when the first one came out. Fucking 21! You should really read up on the history of how they made the first film and you will be amazed at what sheer will and determination this group of young lads had. Btw, love your channel and can't wait to see more!

Fun fact: If you watch the first Evil Dead and Army of Darkness as well as ED2, you can see there are points where if you edit the films together, you get a narrative that shows Ash going through at least four days of trauma, him changing from a geeky and wimpy guy into a badass. Also: The cabin in this film wasn't found, but was actually two separate sets that were constructed. The first was the exterior by itself out in the woods. The second one was the interior, which was filmed inside of the gym of a high school. For the first film however, the cabin featured in was a found location, with the basement being filmed in two different locations that Sam Raimi had access to (which includes his parent's basement). Finally: The "old woman" demon in the cellar was actually performed by Ted Raimi, Sam Raimi's younger brother. He also appears in both the first and third film as various characters (and has performed in other Sam Raimi productions as well). Ted also came back to reprise the role again in Ash vs. Evil Dead when Ash and company jump back in time.

A set of great B-Grades to watch that are super gory but shows the initial talent of the filmmaker is Peter Jacksons "Bad Taste" (1987) and "Dead Alive"/"Brain Dead" (1992). My favorite horror movie along with the first Evil Dead (1982). Love the experimental cinematography, the over-the-top but fun acting, the special effects, the dark humor, and the Man himself, Bruce Campbell. The same can be said for the original first film. Hence why they are a tie for me as my favorite horror film :) I am glad Tom loved it and that Shaun still dug it as well. I cannot wait to see Tom's reaction to Army of Darkness. It is definitely the funniest of the 3. And it is also EPIC! And I hope that Shaun enjoys re-watching it as well. Good job once again, fellas. Glad you enjoyed it.

The Evil Dead series was one of my absolute favorites growing up. A lot of people think that after Army of Darkness the series went cold until the remake and Ash vs the Evil Dead but there were video games and Comics that continued the storylines and characters and Bruce Campbell even provided his voice. When the remake came out I felt it did exactly what it shouldn’t have done and that was go down the serious route I did however love the stinger after the end credits and I hope they still visit that possibility. Ash VS. The Evil Dead on Starz had 3 incredible seasons that I wish had continued I’m hoping for at least one last Evil Dead hurrah between Campbell and Raimi or at least a spin-off of Pablo’s character.

@@DanielS2001 I mean I’m just quoting a Jason franchise movie director here lol. But if we want to get technical he can’t be “called” a Deadite when New line cinemas doesn’t own Evil Dead, any more than the Maximoffs could be called mutants in the MCU when they first entered. But the exact quote from director Marcus is: “It’s not like I could tell New Line my plan to include The Evil Dead, because they don’t own The Evil Dead. So it had to be an Easter egg, and I did focus on it…there’s a whole scene that includes the book, and I hoped people would get it and could figure out that’s what I’m up to. Bruce Campbell is the total star within this film, ho solely makes it imo. His depiction of slow insanity is amazing acting, alongside his ability to bring humour to what was for me and its time, a very scary film. Love it, great job guys. 👍😊

If you never saw the first movie, the normal response to the first 5 minutes of the film is a legit "wtf is going on". Btw, 11:18 is basically "Sam Raimi in a nutshell"; in the span of a few seconds you go from the absolute tension of the building up to what is buried in the basement straight to the jump scare of Henrrieta straight up to laughing your ass off with the way Ash screams...only Sam Raimi can get you through all those emotions in just 3 seconds.

Have you watched the series from shudder? If not I really recommend it. Watched it all in one sitting last weekend. I only meant to give it a quick look and suddenly I'd spent a good few hours watching the lot 😂 Tom savini directs one of the episodes and it's his former understudy that's the showrunner. It's great that they stick mostly to practical FXs

That was a damn good video. Thank you (And not to sound like I don't appreciate your reaction) The most important part to me was one of yall saying "I seen it 7 years ago" YOU ARE HONEST instead of "First time reaction" (to things you have seen) Much props to you and thank you for your honest reviews. EDIT: SPOILER the end of the first movie is ash getting hit (same as evil dead 2 that makes him a deadite) They left it as "He is dead" Until that moment where he goes flying Its a recap from the previous film. Watch Army of Darkness THEN the TV show. (Don't get me wrong first film is great to view. But its not going to give you extra context)

Evil Dead 1 is very much different from ED2. The first one is much more suspenseful and down-right horrific at times, it has absolutely ZERO slap stick humor but it is nothing compared to the extreme gore and brutality of the remake. You really need to check it out it is a corner stone of actual horror movies. It is like the difference between Night of the Living Dead and Shaun of the Dead.

My top horror movies I'd love to see you guys react to (if you haven't seen them of course): THE SHINING (1980): The slow build of up to complete insanity is perfect. DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978): Great idea of boarding up in a shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse, and the soundtrack by Goblin is pure 70's gold. MONSTER SQUAD (1987): It's like the Goonies, but with monsters. A nostalgic favorite. PHANTASM (1979): Just a bizarre film. So bad, that it's good. Great, even. Glad I found your channel. Just what I needed as we get into October.

Basically, the first 5-10 minutes of ED2 is a (very) brief synopsis of ED1. Except that in the first film, it's four people (two young couples) in the cottage. That film also contains a scene of one of the girls getting raped by a tree, which Raimi has specifically stated he wish was never shot. IIRC, ED1 was a very ambitious film school project, hence Raimi couldn't legally use the footage from the first film without everyone else involved giving the go-ahead (which they obviously didn't). Hence the part sequel, part remake controversy. HOWEVER, Raimi has also stated that if you splice the entire ED1 to replace the "remake" segment of ED2, and then replace the ending with the entire ED3, you would get one very long but still continuous movie, more like he envisioned the story to begin with. He also apologized to anyone who had to see said film once they were done copy-pasting.

Good stuff. Have you two ever considered watching 'The Fly' made in 1986? It's very well directed and acted with a compelling story, and it's the ultimate in gross body horror, nothing even rivals it. Also it's a tragic love story and has a young Jeff Goldblum in it.

I saw this for the first time when I was about 10(I´m 40 now) and have seen it many times after and I think its brilliant. I think it´s a comedy with horror elements. The first one is more a horror film and the third one is a true comedy. All are cheesy in a good way and great all together but Evil Dead 2 is the best one.

Up until Ash gets picked up and thrown through the woods it's a recap of the first film. They didn't own the rights to their own movie so they had to reshoot scenes from the original as a recap. This is one of my favourite movies and my 2nd favourite horror movie of all time after The Thing (1982).

ED2 is great, but you do need to watch the first one, there's a particular scene in it that's....infamous for one thing lol but also, even though this is a sort of remake, they did pretty much change everything that happened in the beginning, for starters it wasn't just him and his girlfriend but his friends that went to the cabin in the first one, and the stuff that happens is awesome lol I would imo, rather call this a sequel, because it absolutely shows what happens AFTER the first one.
