"bloat" is an overused critical term, and accusing a 10 hour game like Evil West of it seems a bit absurd. the only game that i would say is legitimately bloated is AC Odyssey - i typically find most other games accused of bloat (Witcher 3, Mafia 3, Alien Isolation, Mad Max, etc) to be fine as long as i play them intermittently. one has to wonder if reviewers complain about bloat not because a game is actually too long, but rather because they play the whole thing in a handful of very long sessions to meet arbitrary embargo deadlines.

I happen to enjoy this game despite its intense linearity because it brings me back to the type of games that you would have seen in the mid to late 2000s. So, dated in that sense is simply being nostalgic, which isn’t necessarily something that hurts the game and its presentation. If you were hoping for something like Red Dead Redemption 2 but with vampires, then the game obviously fell short. I just wanted to have fun, and I did.

Vanquish I'd say isn't revolutionary, and its a game I like. Simply put its a game that never reached its full potential, movement while fast and has more options than typical Gears of War like games. It's very limited in terms of Ariel maneuvers, the most you can do is a dive kick into an enemy and cover for a bit of shooting mid air. even on foot theres a sheer disconect between the environment and you options, where cover can slow you down (like trying to hop over) and is full of invisable walls. Or animations to do something as simple as climbing a ladder, or jump down a ladder. It's not a simple animation but, more of an Re4 style prompt to climb it. Not a good thing to have movement and combat stop for as simple as a ladder in a movement action game. The melee system is stupidly limiting and handicaps you more than actively helps. Why do a punch when it takes away all your energy for movement? The enemy themselves aren't that interesting or varied, just robot designs that I can't remember besides their color. The levels themselves are very forgetable and basic as well, shooting on a small cargo train thingy, escorting a truck of soldiers, very, very slowly in a dark tunnel... I could go on, again, I love Vanquish, but it has so much missed potential and a lot of flaws. I really wish we got a sequal. Its an okay game with solid combat thats just not as flushed out as it could be. Its not revolutionary, it did nothing new besides add slide dashing and very raw melee combat to a Gears of War esque shooter, but besides that it is extremely unmemorable and flawed.

Every AAA game from Sony, Ubi, and many others has all this hand holding, forced exposition from characters, melodramatic cutscenes, goofy ranking systems where you can't kill lowly enemies because of a number hovering above their head, can't explore, can't figure stuff out on your own, etc. Many times I just want to shoot at shit, hear some cheesy dialogue, and be done in a few days. I've had more fun with these AA type games the past few years than I do most AAA games. Even though critically, the AAA are better in most ways. EDIT: Seeing how people are missing the point of what I'm trying to say, I think GMan's DIFFICULTY to admit that down-time has a purpose is a sign that he lacks the fundamental understanding of what makes down-time so important in some games. Now that it's updated, the bugs broke the game to the point that I can't progress the story anymore. Shadow Warrior 3 somehow managed to run at 30 to 60 fps, and there are MANY indie titles that can run at 60 fps on ps4 pro. One of them being hellblade senua sacrifice, a game that has incredible visuals, running at 1080p 60fps on a ps4 pro, and is made from Unreal Engine 4, the same engine Evil West uses. I personally liked the combat of evil west, despite some badly designed ranged weapons, but Flying Wild Hog really messed up the technical state of Evil West. @@bluwolf9357 And the game still quality-wise sucks with its nostalgicly bad graphics out of the xbox360 while the gameplay could be much better if it doesnt slog so hard because of HP-bloated enemies , unnecessary walking segments as shimming through cracks / slopes /cliffs without any danger whatsoever , braindead puzzles that no one asked for , linear level-design that isnt opened up again ( doesnt need to be open world , atleast having open levels like in Duke 3D or in Unreal with real secrets in them ) , wave based arena-combat because making good enemy placings in videogames is seemingly WAY TOO HARD for the devs to do and an Level up system that wasnt really needed in this game. I mean if you have fun with the game then its fine because this isnt about taste that i speak off. Having fun isnt the problem but saying "dont listen to this guy" and having not any good argument whatsoever that underlines your claims is not only open for critic but total BS too.

There are definitely things in this game that need improvement. But with that being said I’m in like 4 hours into the game and it’s pretty good. When you get into a decent rhythm with its mechanics the combat is really satisfying.

That's a bummer. I'm a sucker for paranormal westerns. I absolutely loved Weird West earlier this year. Oh well

Don't trust this guy. He's overly-critical about the games he hates, and overpraises the games he likes. This guy gave Fallout 76 a good review on launch date, as well as Postal 4. Yeah, yikes.

Stop assuming its bad because of this guy, watch more reviews.

So it’s a game without any of that “made for modern audiences” BS and doesn’t take itself so seriously? Awesome. Finally a VIDEO GAME.

Seeing how bland, unimaginative and easy it is, its definitely made for modern audiences

1:35 main difference between Darkwatch and Evil West is that in Darkwatch you have good looking female characters like Cassidy and Tala.....Tala is so good

I'll still pick this one up. It's more my type of length and scope which I miss from the PS2 to early PS3 days.

I respect Gman but the I just can't trust his opinions on newer games recently. He does retro reviews and litterally gobbles boomer shooter D but then complains about modern games that don't innovate. He is the guy that hates every new movie and brings up the Departed and Fight Club.

This game is a breath of fresh air from games continuously being all about open world exploration with hundreds of items to collect and thousands of abilities, useless level up system and mtx.

You act like all open world games are unisoft styled though at least with microtransactions lol
