Best way to save some $$$ plus these motors are getting harder and harder to find people qualified to work on them.

I thought about buying a 250 that’s for sale on marketplace near me because it’s pretty cheap. I have an old mercury black max and it’s pretty hearty on fuel so that would be my reason for getting an E tec. Are they worth buying these days? I’m just worried about tech-support and parts.
@1Cast1Fish3 ай бұрын
Can u do most or all the maintenance yourself? Do you have a shop that will touch it? If yes and it’s a heck of a good deal and low hours… get it checked out and might be worth it if it’s good to go. If you don’t have a shop or can’t do maintenance yourself…honestly you may want to stay clear…not because they are bad motors… they are great. But you will need extra support and it’s getting harder and harder to find shops who will mess with them.

@@1Cast1Fish Yes I am an automotive technician by trade but I do all of my marine work myself at the house. We don’t have any local supply stores anymore. One of them closed down a couple months ago so I would have to order all the parts online. I was wondering if injectors and EMM’s were still readily available.
@1Cast1Fish3 ай бұрын
They are to some extent, slight premium on pricing though. They still have a parts network out there, just not as robust as before. There are places that will rebuild the EMM to.

Seems to be a bunch etec owners in here. I’m looking at a boat with a 2010 etec 50 hp. How reliable are these engines?
@1Cast1FishАй бұрын
As reliable as the previous owner and their maintenance. Honestly they are super reliable and great when taken care of, however they can have issues if not taken care of. I would never buy a used one with having a ETEC mechanic look it over and run diagnostic tests for codes and hours and such. You want to know it's history.

how many did you have to buy to properly index the plugs in your motor?
@1Cast1Fish3 ай бұрын
I normally buy 8, I have at least 1 or 2 that have issues normally. I just return the extra if not needed, or save till next time.

Hi, so I took my spark plugs out to change them, the gap on the plugs I took out was .040, the new plugs I bought come set at .040 Boat has ran great for a couple of year like this.. On the tag on the motor it says set at .028 - .030 what should they be set at ?? ran great at .040 Evinrude 175 ETEC 2010

I now have a 012 Etec 175hp an want to start tuning up an replace all filters. thanks for sharing to avoid the boat ppl.whenever possiable.edit:fleaday has best deal

The Champs are what Evinrude recommends so that is what I have always ran...I heard of others using different plugs but with mixed results.
@cindykeselowski899Ай бұрын
So would you recommend a 2015 Evinrude etec 115 with 233 hours?
@1Cast1FishАй бұрын
Lots of variables I would want to do a full diagnostics on the motor first. They are extremely reliable when taken care of properly.
@cindykeselowski899Ай бұрын
OK thanks, the compression is good & 233 hours. Anything else I need to check?
@1Cast1FishАй бұрын
I would want a full diagnostic check with the software...look at alarm and code history, hours, temps, voltages, ect. Preferably a on the water test with software as well to see any issues in real time or historically. You can also perform system checks with the software such as injector checks

Well, as your biggest fan...lol, I watched this video 2 days too late. I looked ALL over for the original plug stamped on my engine tag, but Joe from Barnacle Bills helped me to determine that the plug number had been updated to the QC10WEP, so I bought them from him (at twice the price), to support his business and compensate him for the help. Normally, I'd be looking for the best deal though. Thanks so much for all your videos and help, as always.
@1Cast1FishАй бұрын
Honestly no foul there...I order plenty from Barnacle Bills, and they are super helpful over the phone making sure you are all set. I plan on sending my injectors to them most likely this winter just as preventive maintenance.

As a fellow Vet, I would love to give you a simple fix for cheap...but unfortunately that is not really the case. I am assuming you are talking about the VST, in which case the old OEM ones are from Carter, they are no longer made. The newer ones (most agree better designed) come as a easy to replace whole unit, but has a restrictor for the tell tale that must be added for most engines. (Should be in the kit) Now I have seen a few people tear the whole VST apart and put an Ebay replacement pump only...problem is that in some cases it lasts a bit, but in others it goes bad very quick...then you are out even more money. IMO, I would buy the new VST and look at doing the install yourself...its fairly straight forward if you look everything over well. This is one instance where a cheap band aide fix may end up costing more in the long run and may be better to do right with a new updated part. Hope this helps a bit
