I have a bimmer e90. 2009 same year as yours. always do preventive maintenance religiously, like you as well. but certain parts of european cars are honestly expensive and when they break, be prepared to cough up the maintenance costs. my transmission mechatronic broke and it costed me more than 12k to replace (didnt go to authorised dealers as they charge about 15k). I know it's a pain, but every time I throttle down and feel the straight 6, it rewards me in a way that no japanese cars could. so it's a bittersweet thing

+T Howell my Toyota's steering lock failed. Used one is RM2.9k lol when expensive stuffs broke down, they are expenaive to fix be it euro or japan. First gen honda city cvt is rm15k to fix too

the only worry with conti cars is that the amount of sensors that they have built in, any one of them fails can render the car unable to start due to safety reason, for most asian cars their design is more sinple and don't leave you stranded suddenly without warning. i think that this is the most annoying part of owning a conti car compared to an asian car. when they fail they don't give you any heads up whatsoever, thats why its better to do preventive maintenance and lookout for stuff that might fail or close to the breaking point.

it is simple. if you dare enough to buy a 2nd hand car (or recond), you should know the basics of doing car maintainance and follow them, and it really saves you a lot of money. But, if you really don't trust the dealer, then buy a new car.. nowaday there are lots of affordable car, but not luxurious..Thanks Bobby for the video.

im driving a passat b7 with 93k mileage on it, so far so good, changed the mechatronic once, i feel that the maintenance is quite reasonably priced especially when u take into account of the parts pricing, maybe the labor cost is higher than outside 3rd party service centres or specialist but u don't get your warranty voided, and volkswagen allows u to change your wear and tear parts outside of the service centre which allows u to save a lot

having a benz E200 CGI and smart forfour 1.5, I can totally agree that they are very expensive to maintain. 3 months ago in April my E200 cgi's engine camshaft, timing belt and some other things broke at 78K km, sent for specialist for 2 months overhaul rm15K. Before overhaul the turbo would misfire when driven for long distances. Coolant also have to refill very often, about twice a month. My smart forfour 1.5 maintainance not very expensive, but things are starting to go bad already. The semi auto trans sometimes cannot engage 1st gear, have to restart engine few times. wanna go reverse also won't shift out of neutral. Mechanic told me to fix will be about rm3k+ but decided not to fix cause will be selling soon, furthermore I rarely drive it.

It's interesting for me as a European to see the perception amongst the Malaysians about European cars. Obviously there are a lot factors that come into the equation about ownership of a car. But for me, I've owned a Mercedes C Class in the past. Was it a reliable car? Not bad, but not as reliable as you might think? Same for the likes of other European brands like Audi, BMW, Jaguar etc. But the main issue is of ownership is cost. If you own a car, you want it to be a reliable as possible. So the best way to do that is regular maintenance and buying engineered parts. Other than that, does a European car drive better than a Malaysian car like Proton or Perodua? Of course it does because you pay the price for it. But it doesn't mean that say a Proton is an unreliable car. Even proton over here aren't renowned for their amazing build quality, but history shows their usage of Mitsubishi parts has been generally quite reliable. Also, take into consideration that European cars are predominantly for countries with stronger currency's like the British pound, the Euro, the US Dollar etc, so they're more affordable for these countries than say in Malaysia. But this is where I give credit to Proton and Perodua. They take into consideration their rivals and they're fairly priced overall, and it takes into consideration the main market, being obviously Malaysia and throughout the region. The way I see it is this...If I were to live in Malaysia, I would want preferably a Japanese car and my 2nd option would be a Malaysian. The cost of living equates to it. So these brands do suit the local market. So if buying a Malaysian car makes sense, in terms of affordability, then go for it. But if someone feels they want an alternative, that drives better, that has a real essence of quality, luxury and comfort, then buy a European car if you can afford to maintain it.

Thanks for your comment. There are various aspects in terms of what we define as reliability too. In Europe, plenty of environmental regulations meant that the use of materials had to be biodegradable, this is not something the Japanese car makers need to consider when they make cars in Malaysia or Indonesia or Thailand. Which means long lasting plastics - reliability + 1. Also, cars had to be subjected to annual checks for road worthiness in many European countries, I'm not sure about UK but it certainly is in Germany. And thus it is imperative for cars in Europe to have sensors to notify on every little component's health or errors. Also, labour fees are extremely high in Western Europe for workshops and mechanics, which means diagnostics is a must to hasten the process and to notify owners of issues via OBD readers etc. Compared to cars in our region, (of course it's slowly changing now as we've aligned ourselves with UNECE) most cars here won't give you a fault code or warning light for misfires, wrong reading on O2 sensors etc, which means the owners arent aware, and continued driving our cars, less warning lights = reliability + 1. Sophistication. Cheap european cars can't sell in Asian countries, the little Golfs, Polos, Vauxhalls, Citroens, Fiats etc, these are uncompetitive against the Japanese makes in our region for outright simplicity and ease of abuse, thus most of our exposure to European cars are premium makes. And we don't buy low specced premium cars, when we already pay about 150-200% duties on these cars, might as well spec them up. Therefore the more features a car has, the higher the chances of things in need of repair. It's the same as having a bugalow, 2 TVs, 5 water heaters, 6 air conditioners, etc; versus a simple small house with 1 tv, 1 heater, 1 air conditioner, the latter would have lower upkeep of course. simplicity = reliability + 1 Adoption of technology. European carmakers needs to adopt the latest and greatest technology to one-up their competitors. I remember I was invited to Continental's R&D facility back in 2016 where they showed me their prototype wireless charging panels for PHEVs, and guess what, late 2017 BMW declared first in the world to provide the option for wireless charging of their 5 series PHEV (i dont think that time frame is even feasible for reliable production), but guess what, BMW's quiet about it now. European customers are more savvy and scientific, in that they understand that, say for example, when there's water leakage in a bathroom, it had to come from some pipes or hoses that leaked, hence finding the source fixing it will solve the problem. Asian customers are more superstitious, we'd rather believe that when our cars developed an issue, it has to be a gremlin or this car is a lemon, and scream and shout ensues. Thus Toyota will never adopt the latest technology in fear of backlash, whereas European car makers must adopt the latest technologies because everyone's doing that. That's why you will only see Toyota use proven tech instead of leading the charge for brand new components where their reliability is yet proven. But I notice Honda is changing their attitude recently, they've become more daring in adopting new tech sooner than their competition, this has generated great sales results for them, but also a pain in after sales service. In the end, it's two different mentality and approach, and hence I always want to address this to my audience, in telling them that whatever it is, our biggest issue so far, in Malaysia, is still uncertified mechanics, and that we as Asians value trust higher than truth. Thus an uncertified mechanic can tell us anything when we trust them.

Hi Bobby, Audi DSG DL501 Transmission has 2 fluid circuit, one circuit is for the DSG itself which runs the mechatronic and wet clutches, this runs a special fluid and the other is for the transmission and differential itself which runs on traditional transmission fluids. With this dual circuit it improves the reliability and cross contamination of the fluids and also improves the torque now rated to 600Nm and 450BHP. In comparison the DQ250 wet clutch only uses one fluid for both the mechatronic/clutch and transmission.

But when you go to the workshop to repair the car, they always charge much more than Japanese car..and when you ask, they normally will say, ohh your car is luxury car, so luxury car part are more quality and that is the price for it. my friend works in VW HQ Malaysia as a market researcher. his colleague from customer service department is having much more difficutlt time to deal with customer complaints on vehicle breaking down. and his previous company was Lexus customer service department , has lesser complains on vehicles breaking down. of course volume of vehicle sold for VW Vs Lexus is much higher. what he is saying VW vehicle definitely has much more issues compared to Japanese made vehicle, thus maintainance and parts and time spent in SC is much higher compared to Japanese made cars.

agreed on the perception. like the shoe price comparison compared to car parts that you have made. It's about your passion/ hobby. if you are passion about shoes ..rm1k per pair also no complain la, coz that is your passion. for cars, as what you mentioned, you are much willing to spent on channging the parts and maintenance even service is not due yet, to prevent major issues cropping up. I owned an Alfa 147 & a Honda city...i spent alot of time in a alfa workshop, more than in a Honda. but I find it much more enjoyable to be in a alfa workshop as compared to Honda SC hahaha..can keipoh around other people's Alfas hehehe.

A4 2.0 turbo comes with horrible oil leak issues which may cost a lot to fix as for your V6 supercharge (S4) is mostly likely to be more reliable than the A4.

In all fairness...most concern about owning continental cars in Malaysia is not the servicing cost and wear and tear parts. In all fairness continental cars parts prices are acceptable, it is just that the skills and technical know how of mechanics fixing continental cars in Malaysia is sorely lacking...which leads to misleading diagnosis and high repair bills .

Recently I were searching around used car dealer for an 2009-2011 makes Audi A4 B8 1.8T, and i wanted to buy as it was the first sight love back to My secondary school time . But was worry about the maintenance cost , and keep on search around . But after your video I feel comparing to a Saga 1.6 maintenance cost with those transmission oil change , brake pair everything it already cause for about RM 1200. No way. Even how cheap European car makers can source for parts in the market, they will jack up the prices & make a profit out of it. There's no way a European (Mercedes or BMW) for example, can be cheaper to maintain than a Japanese or Malaysian car. Sometimes it's not about the parts , it's more about the labor cost. European car makers have very high labour costs for servicing. Sorry but I have to disagree with this video....

Almost all of their mileage are tempered. But that doesn't stop you from requesting the original AP documents that shows the real mileage. Another way if you're buying European premium cars, just check on their VINs online and most of the time, according to that model's service requirements, an estimated mileage will be shown too. So if you found a car you really liked and checked the mileage of the car and it's 90,000km (real mileage) but the car shows 18,000 km. You can just nego and purchase it and then tell your mechanic that this car is 90,000km and you will want to service it like a 100,000km car. Most car components are designed to last 100,000km. So you can do a more extensive preventive maintenance on your car. Don't be put off your purchase even if it's 90,000km because mechanical bits are easy to service and maintain, hardest would be interior. So a great interior but worn mechanicals is always a better buy than a worn interior with great mechanicals and low mileage. Mileage doesn't mean anything really, just an indication on at what stage of its life cycle for those consumable, wear and tear items like aircond compressor, clutches, filters, seals, bushes, bearings, tensioners, belts, injectors, coil packs, gaskets, water pumps etc.

Just think of one mindset, more high tech stuffs in the car will bring us more trouble when car is getting old, basically what you pay is what you get, that's it. Myself owned kancil and saga with the similar age before, apparently saga's parts are cheaper but easily broke down, kancil's part abit more expensive but last longer, now i have sold both of them and gotten Alza and Jazz, maintenance wise jazz will be slightly more expensive but you will feel the differences of these 2 cars.

But european cars come with a lot more equipments and electronics so over time the maintenance cost is definitely higher, they also depreciate more than their japanese counterparts in Malaysia. A regular service on a Volvo easily costs RM700-1k while it only costs Rm300 max on say a City. While it is true that the cost of maintenance is not as CRAZY as some may believe, higher maintenance cost is a fact. Many malaysian buyers still suffer from unreliable grey imports which is also a factor. Nonetheless, european cars just tend to offer so much more in terms of drivability, desirability, looks etc. so its all worth it

Sorry but i have to disagree - he's comparing the price servicing (engine oil,transmission oil etc) - so thats why there is not much different.However,when we talk about maintaince,we have to take into account parts prices Parts that u can use cross platform and cars are ok - engine fluid,brake pad and disc,suspension But if u buy parts that are specific for the car - sensor ,valve etc - then when u see the price your gonna cough blood - for example - a side mirror of a BMW 330e (which by it self cost rm245k) will set u back rm3-4k However,a side mirror for a honda accord wont exeed rm1k - lets not even get to the topic of gearbox and sensors etc The reality is,most malaysian fear that european cars cost a lot to maintain is justified. Dont be a euro fanboy.When people ask you,a car journo,is a european car more expensive to maintain.Then the answer is a clear yes.

Bobby, if only the cost of car ownership is based on the cost of regular servicing but this isn't the case. The major cost which has not been mentioned at all is the cost repairs for wear and tear items, breakdowns and failures. European cars are unreliable in our climate and full of electronics which can fail. They cost a bomb to repair compared to Japanese cars. The real cost of ownership must take into account expected repair costs and not just changing fluids.

hai Bobby Ang. currently i am considering to own either Honda City or Volkswagen Vento 1.2 TSI. Could you advice me which one is better in term of driving performance and cost maintenance. I have read alot of complain of Volkswagen cars but i dont know it is the new model vento 1.2 tsi still have the same problem as previous model.
