Finally some sound financial advice on car buying. IMO, the most important point here is that buying used car doesn't mean we can spend all budget on buying the car. Many people tend to underestimate the ownership cost associated to used car.
@johnnytampocao76715 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you, everything was on point. Some people including myself didn't consider these factors you mentioned as a serious matter. How i Wish i have watched this video before I bought my car a year ago.

I agree about buying used car and want to sell/trade-in it again. This May my dad bought a 2009 1.6 Proton Exora for RM22k at Cash. What he said after bought it " Kita pakai kereta ni sampai dia rosak jadi besi buruk tak dapat jalan ".

Super great info. My wife just thinking of getting a car. She love Volks Polo 1.6 hatchback. I told her get the secondhand, the price is not that bad around 30k to 40k. That's what it stated in Mudah and Carlist. Might go to the dealers to follow your steps. Any advice Kon? will be much appreciated.

Hi Bro, the car is cheap in 2nd market but regular servicing cost is slightly higher than Japan car in the same range, just have to factor the cost into your budget. It is a good car with great handling :)

@@KonWaiLuen i like to change cars every few years or sooner. I do project the estimated market value of the car, in say next 3 to 5 years. Together with a financial calculator to see the exact loan balance after 3 or 5 years mark.

That budgeting formula is exactly what I did, but I also considered that I'll be keepingg long term so I don't really care about that resale value that most Malaysians always talk about and end up getting few Japanese brands. thanks for putting this out Kon!
@KonWaiLuen5 жыл бұрын
I think if you look at the market value of cars a year or two older than what you're buying, that should be the loan amount you target. Say a RM100k car depreciates to RM80k in one year, then set your loan amount to RM80k, and you should be quite safe.
@ykwc45 жыл бұрын
Sometimes, you need to factor in the maintenance costs of the car beyond the warranty period. One may be thinking of keeping the car long term but in reality, beyond the warranty period, one may face the difficulty due to high maintenance costs of the car. Then the person is stucked with keeping the car and have to fork out a higher price for maintenance and if he wants to let go of the car, the resale values sucked.
@CalvinWoo75 жыл бұрын
Hi Kon, I have a different question for you. (Away from the topic of this video) Is it alright to change my stock rims to aftermarket sport rims while the car is still under warranty? Apart from voiding the warranty *which should not happen at all unless it affects anything else on the car* Just needed some advice before proceeding to get some awesome rims :)
@KonWaiLuen5 жыл бұрын
It should not. At most, you may affect warranty coverage of the wheel bearing, but that's it.

For me is always 5% of my income go into car installment. For ex. If my income 10k, i can only afford 500 of monthly installment... either fork out large cash upfront or drive saga/bezza.

Hi Kon, idk if you will ever see this but thank you for making this video.. It features very good explanation but I'm still contemplating between an used Subaru XV or an used Proton x70. I have 2 hyphotetical scenario with some calculations below and I hope to get your advise on which would be a better option because I know I'm the type of guy that might want to change car every 3-4 years, afraid about its maintenance costs, depreciation and etc.. I like the XV but I'm afraid that it might cost me more for its higher maintenance due to its unique boxer engine, usage of CVT, and further depreciation if facelifted XV with Eyesight were to be announced. Whereas for the x70, I do like it too because it has basically everything but it's just a little too big for my needs now. Should I just get it and get get familiarize instead? - Rm90k Subaru XV '18/19 - Rm100k Proton x70 '20 CKD Both still with its respective 5 years warranty warranty. For both of the cars mentioned above, I plan to trade in my Axia '16 in hoping that I could get around 20k in DP (2nd hand car value + top up cash for DP). (Hypothetically counting with 4% int) • XV Total loan w/ int: RM89,600 / 84 = RM1066 • x70 Total loan w/ int: RM102,400 / 84 = RM1219 Say I paid the installment for 3 years • XV - RM89,600 - RM38,376 = RM51,224 • x70 - RM102,400- RM43,884 = RM58,516 Are those loan balance actually okay after 3 years in 2024 if I were to sell off the cars. I checked for some "15/16 XVs, they are selling at around RM50~Rm60k and for the x70, it's fairly uncertain..
@KonWaiLuen3 жыл бұрын
You've obviously given the matter due thought. In honesty, neither are bad choices, and given the fact that you're ready to put a generous downpayment, you should be quite well insulated against depreciation. For maintenance, well, the Proton network is far more widespread than Subaru and will be easier, but the XV has higher grade mechanicals and will take more abuse if you're looking to subject it to rough use.

@@KonWaiLuen thanks alot for your opinion Kon, I will try to test drive both of the models in question and decide which is better for my driving characteristics then

Hope you don't mind I share my experience. I did help some friend view used car they are buying before because all my cars were bought used too. You may also refer to well expericed Chris Wee video as he review used car mostly. You need some good eye and sensing when viewing a particular unit. Always identify few units to view at once. You may bring a paper and pen to mark down the plus and minus of each unit you find during viewings and decide later. To me the main thing is the mechanical condition must be healthy. Most will look at the 1st appearance which ok but then still mechanical is crucial for future maintenance. The paint and colot can be done much later at ease. Against the odometer reading, you can try spot the wear and tear on tires(a lot more on this topic if wanna eloborate), the pedal wear, steering, chipstone on windscreen(for classic cars, some edge stain signifies no accident and originality) and headlamps, the brake discs, the rubber trims and seat(driver's one). Engine appearance you can check for any potential new parts and why its changed, accident or parts broke down due to wear and tear. Manufacturer will mark the screws after finishing production so check all the screws if they ever open it by somebody before. This indicates some major work done on it and could be issue. The discolour of pastic tanks against it mileage is a sign if that is genuine mileage too. Then also spot if any new paint on the car that look suddely like new..tjat may be been in accident repairs. Need good eye to see any wave. Then open up the doors to see how the paintings are like if the panel have been removed or changed. Check for gaps too and you can easily compare few units to see the gaps. Can check interior for and deep scratches on plastic panels if hard accidents have happened to it before. Signs of accidents. Then test drive testing as usual for the straightline,bumps,cornering feel and so on. When I view a used car, I always have in mind what have happened to this particular unit with the previous owner. Very subjective indeed. So high mileage cars with less interior wear might be good option as this car is highway cruiser. It must be supported with good service history though. Low mileage cars with many scratches and wear are the ones you should becareful. One more, before uying a used CX5(or any car), do some study on the most common issue raised by owners. Then you can have the readiness at mind on what to expect ahead. Hope this help and happy new year.
