I rode my 1968 generator Shovelhead until the Evo was discontinued. I was always one of the anti-Evo guys because the Evos seemed to be for the Yuppies and instant 'credit card' bikers. But after working on them , I got a respect for them. When the TC-88 came out, I had a change of heart, and bought a low-milage 1997 ex-Police Roadking. I stripped out the Magnetti-Marelli fuel-injection, put on a recalibrated CV-40 Keihin, Andrews EV-27 cam and V&H Tru-Duels with fishtails. At 63, it's my final Harley. Like my Pan and Shovel, it can be rebuilt forever, and easily upgraded. Or there's always an S&S crate motor.

I ride an EVO it’s the first year of fuel injection (1995) and I love it just modern enough to be useful and classic to be Amazing. It gets a lot of looks. I modernized it with an LED light bluetooth adapter for the cigarette lighter and a quadlock phone holder.

You're 100% correct. And that's because the Evo is built more like the original 1936 Knucklehead but with modern updates and improvements. It has more of old Bill Harley in it. These modern marvels don't.

Car is a necessity since they destroyed all the mass transportation 100 years ago. For most people a motorcycle is a toy they go joyriding on a weekend with beautiful weather. It is a hobby avocation. It's like a boat. You run the boat but you don't commute on it to go to work. My 25-year old evolution- powered Sportster barely makes any oil especially compared to some of my British motorcycles or my soviet-built Ural. But considering how old they are they are doing pretty good

The EVO models are well over 20yrs old now, I was in the factory trained generation that worked on them and shovelheads when new, the major problem I see in my location is there is no one worth a crap that still works on them, I am 70 and I just work on my own and a couple of close friends. It takes more tools and know how to rebuild the pre 2000 engines, that is one reason why they went to the TC, being much easier for less skilled mechanics to work on and shops can pay less for labor. The shop is the least profitable but is important for the overall business, so many HD dealers simply will not work on the old models now, not good profit, bike owners that are idiots and will destroy a vintage engine then sue you. With new bikes the dealer has the factory to help with warranty and tell the owner no you destroyed your own engine no warranty. Glad to be retired, its a sh*T show out there now.

Huh, Evo's are simple compared to tc's and m8 too, the m8's ofcourse went back to the single cam, but much more complicated as far as the water cooled crap on some models, the computer that, until in the past year or two only Cert Harley Dealers could access, and then they went away from Timken bearings in the cranks for a period, but I think they've now gone back to that presently, Evo's, Shovels, Pans, Knucks, are all fairly simple engines imo, I work on all the older bikes my local dealership won't touch, so to be honest, I'm glad they won't work on em. I bet it was cool to see all the classics come and go, but what really chaps me about the Motor Co. Is they seem to have forgotten it was us blue collar, working class guys that's kept them in business for the first 100 years of their existence, and now they want 50k for a limited dresser, not me, no way, no how, I'll buy a low mileage 5 year old bike that some weekend warrior sells to get the latest and greatest. Have a blessed day sir.

I'm 72 and still riding my '99 fxstc and wouldn't have it any other way. My evo has been a strong motor ever since buying it brand new and it's stronger today with approximately 65k on it with just having changing out the cam, cam bearing, ignition, S&S carb, andrews 6 speed gear kit in stock case, exhaust port cones and samson short shot pipes with cheap little shorty punched out metal so-called 'muffler's for some back pressure and to keep the cop muffler billy club test at bay, which in all relativity is not a lot or exotic changes sans the trans 6 speed gears in the stock case, which still is not a big deal either. (mileage could be a little lower since I've long since replace the speedo) And she still cries whenever seeing me walking toward her knowing that I'm gonna' swing my leg over and rider her hard. It's otherwise still a stock 80cu and will keep up with any 107. Trust me when I say that. I know because there has not been a 107 yet that's pulled away from me. None. And she's just plain set up cool for speed, styling and especially a strong motor sound all in one. There are faster bikes and always will be but if 120+ mph ain't fast 'nuff for anyone on a street sled, then there's just something plain wrong with that speed freak. Heads still turn riding down the roads by the distinct, strong harley growl and still stop and look when parked anywhere. She's the perfect gal.

I don’t even know what an Evo engine until like recently. Still new to the Harley scene, when I got my street glide, I thought there was something wrong with the engine but my older neighbor said that’s how Harley work lol. I’m used to the smooth and barley any vibrations of metric tourers. Beautiful bike, looks pretty easy to maintain compared with my sports tourers, can’t wait to do my 1k service.

I completely agree. I've had many bikes and none have been newer than a 98'. Although, I did get a kick out of a factory paint job on a dresser at the dealer. The pin stripping was harley bar and shields. Depending on the angle you looked at it, it completely disappeared. At least they are keeping up on the paint work quality. I've been waiting for that to start loosing it's quality. It has to be only a matter of time until harley starts saving money by cutting back on the quality of the paint work.

With a vintage British motorcycle I was satisfied if the headlight and taillight was working I was good. The electric starter was the beginning of the end. For decades motorcycles just had a Kickstarter because that was all you needed. True some bikes were harder to kick over than others but if you have a big twin that has been hot-rodded with high compression and where cams and all that crap over then yeah it's going to be hard to start with a kicker where is my nice low-powered stocker starts with one kick and I wait for you to kick-start over your hot rod 10 times to get it started. Now you have engines that are big enough to power a car and are so big you could not kick-start them anyway. A flathead motorcycle in the old days would take half kick with a pair of loafers on to start the bike because flatheads were so low compression. They were easy to start and ran cool and lasted forever. With today's B it is not the engine that breakdown it is the electronics that breakdown.

i'm an old school chevy tech since 1983, i've worked on semi's, and now i work on farm tractors. yes the auto companies dont want you or me working on their cars. the motorcycle companies dont want either of us working on them, and the farm tractor companies are doing the same thing. only dealers can do the electronics. i have not yet ridden an M8, but i did love the lope of my 1200, and i like the power of this 103b, but i dont like the fuel injection idling the bike up. i could stand a nickle on it's edge on my 87 honda shadow 1100 with the engine running. the nickle would just stand there.

You are dammed right, its better without all electronics, Injection stuff, it makes life more easier with only Mecanical stuff on the bike. I had for several years problems with creaping power that empty my battery in a week. So I changed the electronic relay to start with, and put on a Mecanical relay, and now the problems are gone. If something go wrong, its 100 times more easy to find out what problems you have if you dont have the electronic stuff, its same with cars. I have a Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme conv. 1970, it works like a clock, no electronic stuff at all.

Glad I stumbled on your channel! I have a 1990 fatboy. Got ot in 99. Put it in storage when all the bs tv shows went popular on tv. And all the big dealership buildings got built. I was embarrassed to own a harley. They tried way to hard to push the brand.. anyway, took it out of storage a few years back and ride it all the time. What I love most about that bike and bikes of that era is exactly what you hit on.. I can and do do all my repairs. I can tear it completely apart in my front yard in the sunshine with my wife keeping me company... I'm currently thinking about getting say an 03 Gilroy Indian and going completely through it. The new Indian pursuit caught my attention lately, but man, all that tech! I have good tools and such, even a very expensive Snap on computer (don't get me started on that company!) I figure I'm going to do a lot more research before I buy or build. Harley lost me as a supporter with the over sea involvement and stunts like you described. Thanks again

Give me a shovelhead, evo, or even a twin cam with a CV carb add a repair manual and (upgrade the cam chest on the TC88) you will manage fine out on the road, but there is always plan B. When all the fancy Electronics on the new bike fail after they pick you up off the floor when you faint from hearing what it's going to cost to fix it you will just live without it. To repair the ABS on a modern BMW motorcycle is $2,400. Most people simply bypass the ABS and go back to regular braking. It's amazing how a little bit of green grunge on an electrical connection will put something out of whack. Outside of my Sportster I have good old-fashioned points on all of my British motorcycles yeah I make all the jokes about Lucas that you want. If you don't screw around with things they are perfectly good electric. My Magneto equipped Triumph 650 twin is a first kick motorcycle the kind you win b e t s on. If it doesn't start it's either the Magneto or spark plugs you don't even need an electrical system at all. All this fancy electronic technology that has craft into every stinking thing is garbage. You use them they go bad you don't use them thank you laminate or something happens to the zinc and it degrades. It's like one of these fancy toy train locomotive that's set in the Box for 10 years and even though it's brand-new the electronics don't work anymore. Don't want them don't need them.

D Evolution motor hands down is the best modern engine Harley ever had. I have four hundred thousand miles on my Sportster. Being an X metric Rider I have been through all the crap with campaigns breaking and destroying your engines. When Harley came out with the twin cam with chain driven camshaft I knew they were going to have problems and they did. Gear Drive has always been the way to go. See Evolution Big twin motor simply does not have any of the mechanical difficulties of the twin cam or the Milwaukee eight motor. With the killing of the evolution Sportster Harley-Davidson builds nothing but crap now. I could purchase several low-mileage garage Queen Evolution powered motorcycles for the price of the new crap that Harley-Davidson puts out now. It's ironic that Harley-Davidsons best big twin motor was conceived and produced by AMF. Harley motorcycles today come with as many problems as a Norton Commando came with and 70 from the use of cheap parts. I would not take a new Harley for free because I could not afford to replace all the crappy parts in the engine as well as fixing all of the other mechanical deficiencies that there are in the Milwaukee eight motor as well as in the revolution Max. It has as many problems as the milwaukee-eight but different ones. In the 1960s the British made great motorcycles in the 1970s they made crap and they went under. Harley-Davidson made great motorcycles in the 90s and ever since 2000 they have built nothing but crap since then. I am not a Harley hater I just call it like it is. Since my Sportster is a low-powered 883 I have to put more saddle time for the mileage that I have achieved then somebody who has a faster bike. It's funny how Harley guys will not only drink the lemonade they will come back for more. And the more they charge for it the more they drink it.

Real motorcycles leak oil but not too much. They also have kickstarter's. I was going to buy a low mileage Evo dresser from the local Harley dealer and I asked to shop people about putting a Kickstarter on the bike and they looked at me like I was insane. They said Frank only you would ask about putting a Kickstarter on the bike. What can I say outside of my Sportster all of my motorcycles are kick-start only. Evos forever forever Evo's. I have a sure that's 40 years old that says hear no Evo See No Evo by no Evo. I never wear that shirt. I did not know how good a n Evo was but I know now. 400,000 trouble-free miles on my Evolution Sportster prove me right. It is ironic I bought my Sportster because I knew I would have a cornucopia of choices for service and repair and it it needed almost nothing I did wear out the stator at 250,000 miles. They told me trade the bike in on a new bike and when I told them how old it was and how many miles on it they said they would give you nothing for it the hell with them.

I would suggest to you to take your engine and have a leak down test performed on it. If it has over 10,000 miles it will fail. Milwaukee 8 engines cooksey Royal to death with the huge amount of heat that they make. Heat and oil failures account for many problems with the milwaukee-eight as well as the twin cam. Evolution motors weather Big twins or sportsters run as cool as a cucumber since their oil is not cooked to death it lubricates so much better which is why they last so long. Frankly I have don't have any idea why people buy Milwaukee age from the dealership when they can go to s&s and get whatever type of Harley motor they want and build a motorcycle around it without having to pay for a special parts that are on the motorcycle just to pass emission laws. They can have the motorcycle equipped exactly as they wanted without having to pay for anything they do not want. I certainly would not buy a milwaukee-eight powered anything because I would have to put $5,000 into the engine to replace all of the crap that Harley save pennies on that cost me dollars to replace.how they can make a motorcycle as reliable as an evolution Sportster and then make a motorcycle that is as unreliable as in Milwaukee h&a revolution powered motorcycle I just can't imagine. But of course I am not interested in any motorcycles that cost more than my house.

Lol if you put it that way miles out maybe evo but I worked on cars of 25 plus years I know how to work on a m8 at the end of the day if it’s not with the Pcm and you see or feel what is off you can still fix it.. I don’t know maybe I’m the wrong person to answer this knowing a bit. You got less problems today than you did back then so I guess you have to look at it yourself what your doing where you going what do you want out of the bike. Everyone would answer a bit deferent I think you have a lot of people evo and a lot of people M8

A Harley-Davidson Milwaukee age is even a bigger piece of crap that the twin cam. I ride with plenty of guys who have Milwaukee 8 motorcycles and their bikes spend more time in the shop and they do on the road. My 1977 BMW 100 slots7 cruises smoothly at 100 miles an hour. It's all day cruising speed is around 120 miles an hour. I would challenge Harley guys to go on the freeway at a 120 miles an hour nobody takes me up on my challenge. My 50-year old BMW put shop one more horsepower than a milwaukee-eight dies stock and this is with 1970s engineering. A BMW Ranch cool-as-a-cucumber all the time. I have engines with 500,000 miles on them that will still pass a leak down test where a Harley-Davidson Milwaukee 8 equipped motorcycle will not pass a leak down test at 10,000 miles because they run show obscenely hot it cooks are oil to death and it lubricates like water and is as thin as water. Harley's last good reliable long-lasting cool running motor was the Evolution motor. I do not need to go into the shopping list of Bilton manufacturing deficiencies in both the twin cam and the milwaukee-eight equipped Motors as well as the revolution Max motor. With the cancellation of the Evolution motor Harley does not have a reliable motor and its lineup at all.

🛑🛑 Carburetors, and Points on automobiles have gone the way of the Doe Doe Bird, so has the Evo Harley Motor. 🤷‍♂️ Get over it. It’s like crying over spilled milk, you can’t do anything about it. 😂💯

Evos are great bikes, but here we go with the m8 hate. 🥱. As far as not being able to work on your shit on the side of the road, it’s like that with everything now. Look under the hood of a new truck. Especially a diesel with one of those DEF systems. Oh, and I rip the hell out of my m8 road glide and love it!
