Ecbert was the first to achieve rule and overlordship over the whole of Anglo-Saxon England. He won the Battle of Ellandun - one of the most important battles in English history where he defeated King Beornwulf of Mercia, ending the long period of Mercian Supremacy and establishing Wessex as the dominant force in all the land. He swooped in and took Kent and Sussex; ruled Mercia directly after driving the the king from his lands; and led an army north to Northumbria where King Eanred accepted Ecbert’s overlordship. Ecbert was indeed the “King of Kings”.
