Knuckles is gliding not flying. When flying you would usually float in the air for a longer time, gliding on the other hand, you'll eventually soar through the air for a short time. Take Superman for example, when Superman flies left, his body moves left through the air. That is called flying. Another example is when Tails rotates his tails, he is flying upwards like a helicopter. For a gliding example, take Batman for example, when Batman jumps off a roof, opens his cape and soars forward, that is called gliding. Understand?
