This was basically my 9th grade biology final. We had 3 hours and 10 pages to write the entire history of the earth, from some of the earliest known microbes and bacteria all the way to plants, then dinosaurs and to modern day and how each species evolved/adapted to their earth conditions at the time. Could some kind soul explain to me what an archosaur is? I Googled it for a definition, but I really don't get it, and how it's related to non avian dinosaurs and non dinosaurs like Dimetrodon. I know it's related somehow, but I just don't get how.

Archosaurs form a monophyletic clade. That means they all descend from a common ancestor and anatomical features should link them all together somehow. All archosaurs are diapsids, but certainly not all diapsids are archosaurs. Today, the diapsids comprise all animals we would call reptiles, including birds. Dimetrodon was a synapsid, therefore could not have been an archosaur. Archosaurs divided into two main groups: Avemetatarsalia (including dinosaurs and pterosaurs) and Pseudosuchia (including crocodilians). Of course within Avemetatarsalia, only the dinosaurs remain.
