Assassin199410 For one, a complex and non-traditional approach to Godzilla is actually kind of insulting towards previous works. Just using one movie as an example, Shin Godzilla is a very human-centric, non-traditional, and politically complex movie. It doesn't have a huge amount of Godzilla destroying stuff compared to the human characters discussing the situation and trying to solve the mystery. For the anime, these human characters are nothing we've not seen before. Angsty person with burning hatred and a passion to kill Godzilla? Check. Person who reveres and has a religious outlook on the monster? Check. Etc. The overall look of the anime is... okay. Not great, the art-style is about average while having a few shots I can say legitimately look good... But nothing, and I mean nothing, that wouldn't have looked better if it were drawn or animated in 2-D animation styles if it were done by a good studio. If you don't want an emphasis on action, then for a visual story, it pays to have visuals that are at least appealing. The character designs are mostly unoriginal, the colors are generally flat except during the action scenes. Lastly, the lost potential. I don't want exclusively an action-packed Godzilla story (Besides the original, my favorite Godzilla movie is 1984/Return of Godzilla or Shin). I want interesting characters and a plot-line that is either fun or at least engaging. I want originality, I'm okay with weird or abstract stuff. Not to mention, there are amazing story elements and concepts that surround the anime, but are sorely unused. At the end of the day, when crafting an original take on something pre-established, one must realize that once one has gone too far, it is now no longer the thing you tried to recreate. They've made a strange, uninteresting story surrounded by amazing concepts, and called it Godzilla. Here's where I think a lot of the focused dislike is coming from, because I totally sympathize with it: this is the first anime Godzilla series. For the first time, we had a chance to see truly epic classicly beloved kaiju brought to life and even re-interpretd in a uniquely Japanese artistic fashion (so not counting the two American G series), with decent budgets. Anyone familiar with anime could see the potential here. This, btw, is why personally I'm fine with the redesigns for Godzilla, Mecha-G (in that broken crazy kaiju form), and Ghidora. And then -- from this perspective -- the producers waste the opportunity by focusing on the human plots just like the majority of all films before now. I kind of like the surroundings of the human(oid) characters, but I didn't come here to watch that kind of story. There are plenty of those kinds of stories already. And done much, much better, too. So the marketing plays once again to fan expectations: it's Godzilla but now in anime, just imagine what that will be like! -- but it's the same old restrictive kaiju action as in a production where such sfx are cash-heavy. Instead we get a sci-fi character drama with some melodrama, and not even a well designed one in its story. (It isn't incompetent exactly, just meh.) And then to top it off, the producers act like they're trying some daring artistic experiment by focusing on the humans this time, and telling a human story this time. But we're not here to see the story of Haruo and company. If they're such great characters with a great story, they should be able to anchor their own anime all by themselves and perhaps some occasional original monster action thrown in. But I don't even get that result: they're a bleh anime story, spiced up by a bait-and-switch tactic that only works by appealing to an established fan base. A fan base that the creators actively want to tic off so that the creators can feel successful in having created something "different" -- when really they haven't done anything truly different at all other than marginalize even moreso the legacy characters they sold their project with. At that point, any pompous or conceited attitude from them provokes a stronger rejection of their whole project than might otherwise be expected. (Which of course makes them pleasure themselves even better for feeling like they really made a "difference" this time.) I don't even usually get angry about this waste of an opportunity, but I thought I should try to cogently speak for the people who are angry about the situation. And in doing so I've gotten kind of miffed about the situation myself. {wry g}

Well, to be fair Kiryu is practically just Godzilla’s skeleton wrapped up in aluminum foil. Some people have even theorized that Cyber Godzilla was an inspiration for Kiryu.

(I mean, he's much more robotic then Cyber Godzilla) Also Kiryu only has the original Godzilla skeleton, and Cyberg Zilla actually, he has parts of his original body.

@DARK GIGAN True, from a distance it’s hard to tell, but as soon as you see his face, or namely the teeth, the nature of Kiryu becomes quite clear. From the definitions I’ve been able to find, a cyborg is a being with both mechanical and organic parts, so Kiryu is as much a cyborg as Cyber Godzilla. I think a fair comparison would be General Grievous from Star Wars and Robocop from the movies of the same name. Grievous is a few organs with a robotic body, while Robocop retained most of his human body, but is kept alive by his robotic parts. The two are very different in terms of augments, but both are cyborgs
