As it should be. After just being a regular boss battle in prior games, Metal Sonic/Neo Metal Sonic finally became the final boss in one and rightfully so. And in doing so, the Super Sonic battle in Heroes is one of my top 5 in the whole franchise. Also, fucking loved his voiced in that game. Sounded so cool.

Timeline wise: I believe is that first it was Metal sonic mk1 (aka Silver Sonic), who was destroyed by sonic. The Robotnik made a upgraded version of him named Mecha Sonic, who was the destroyed by Knuckles in 3&K. And finally there was Metal sonic.

To anyone who thinks so. Mecha Sonic is a prototype to Metal Sonic, designed to match Sonic in speed and power. After Sonic 2, Metal Sonic is made to capture Amy and also match Sonic's speed and power(The events of Sonic CD). After that, Robotnik went back to the Mecha Sonic idea, but upgraded him to be able to consume power from the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald it's self(Which we see in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, by playing as Knuckles and making it to the end). After those events, Eggman went back to Metal Sonic and that's why we see Metal Sonic from then on.

I've always just called the first two Silver Sonic. The one from Sonic CD is (the real) Metal Sonic to me, and idk about the version from S3&K. That one reminded me of Mecha Sonic from the old comics. It was the real Sonic roboticized and the Freedom Fighters had to roboticize Knuckles to defeat him. It was easily the best issue of the Archie Comics series back from when I was a kid.
