I wish they stuck to the creepy cult cathedral like horror atmosphere Q1 had instead of the sci-fi seen in later games. They just weren't scary enough for me and felt too much like doom.

@@Profuse_Vertigo Yeah, but Doom's approach with demonic cult is WAY a more stereotypical and caricaturized. It almost smacks of the cheesy Satanic Panic of the 80s and 90s. While Quake 1 feels more serious. Like what you'd get if you wandered into an actual medieval cult that has been around for thousands of years. The enemies are far more surreal and difficult to make sense of.

WEIRD you get into a level and you start remembering "yea, there's a quad damage hidden behind that box" 29 YEARS AFTER YOU LAST PLAYED IT you remember just odd random stuff like where the next guy is going to jump out at you from... talk about blast from the past... love replaying old games

I remember playing a lot of Quake 1 in 96 and 97. For some reason I didn't play Q2. Then Quake 3 Arena came in 1999. I remember thinking what a huge leap in technology and graphics! And the game ran crisp and super fast. It was only a mere 3 years apart from the first game and the third! Nowadays it's not unusual game companies have 15 years apart from ther games!

Stock Q2 like stock HL was not much fun. Those games were all about the mods (AQ2, TFC, CS, DoD)

Right, to be fair, id Software (John Romero and John Carmack) were insane workaholics and pumped out a game every month in the beginning. It slowed down later but still they were just crazy ^^. As a programmer myself I can highly recommend watching "The Early Days of id Software: Programming Principles" by John Romero ( IzqdZAYcwfY )

I remember people used Quake 3 as a benchmark when using liquid nitrogen on the processor. Fun fact, if you look at the top of the entrance at 2:04 or 2:13, Quake 3 was the first game that had perfectly curved edges of that sort at the time, even to this day I believe because they might have used voxels for that part.

Love the original Quake games. With original visuals and stuff. Despite the fact that i started with Quake 2, and played Quake 1 a long after second game, i still like them both. Quake 3 not so much, because it's multiplayer game but i enjoyed it, despite playing with bots. And Quake 4 is the cool single player game, in my opinion. And that scene, when they transform you in to strogg, is very disturbing but interesting.

Quake 1 is the best hands down. Total freedom of movement including airstrafing, bhop, fast rocket jumps, faster dodging. Interesting eldrich horror/lovecraft setting from tech base to castles and beasts. It still has an active community too. I really want to like Q2 but it’s plays stiff and the first few maps all feel the the same with Enclosed brown warehouses with cyborgs and slightly bigger cyborgs

Technically you're showing what quake looks like in HD with modern source ports. Now show it in Dos Box running at like 320x240 software mode and then we're talkin evolution since then... Gotta have those choppy animations that don't interpolate.

Originally quake 2 was supposed to be a completely different franchise but for some reason they called it quake 2 and imo killed the franchise incredibly early since it lost it's identity. Quake 3 did help but it was still a completely different game from the original.

Quake 3 was ok and 4 I was not a fan of at all. Nothing beats the original when it came to game play, Deathmatches and Team fortress. All the new skins and Maps created back then were awesome. It truly was the wild west of online gaming back then. Quake 4 was way to dark ( Doom 3 anyone ) and honestly was pretty easy even on its hardest setting. To me Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Doom Eternal were probably the best games they made after Q 1 and 2. So many cool games made off the Quake engines over the years. My personal Fav is/was a Game called Tremulous off of the Q2 engine. It was a Team Fortress game were you could either play as an alien or a human and was Fun as hell.

Quake III was the pinnacle of the games graphics. It should've been Quake IV, with advancements in technology and more interesting game play and story lines. Unfortunately, the game came out during a time, where designing super dark play areas was popular, so you really could see much of the graphics anyway. I guess they were trying to make the game scarier, but instead just made it extremely frustrating and boring to play. Doom III was another game that was too dark visually to play. At the time, I preferred playing games like Halo, and Call of Duty, or Super Punch Out in some SNES emulator :)

Well, I have to honestly say that in a direct comparison, "Quake Live" worked best..... "Enemy Territory Quake Wars" doesn't really have Quake in it, nor really EnemeyTerritory, especially when you think of yamods and nitmods and the beloved double jump of all NQ style... and Quake isn't really in there either.... "Enemy Territory Quake Wars" is more of a battlefield with other skins and, thanks to the old engine, runs on every computer these days... So I have to say, for me personally the Quake parts seemed like I had taken a step backwards and then with Quake Live I took a step forward and then another step backwards and quake champions, didn't really look worthy of quake if we're honest...

Unfortunately.. quake just needs to die down as a game. Look at where Doom has taken their franchisee. And quake is just remastering their old games now. I use to love quake. With Strogg, they could've made such a great story out. Quake 4 was such a good attempt at a story line. Even though the story was boring as heck, but it was good for its time. Someone at ID software should've focused on Quake as well.

I think a Doom 2016-style reboot done in the Quake universe would be incredible. ID has shown that they are totally capable of making awesome games with existing IPs, and they’ve already done Wolfenstein and Doom. Quake seems like a natural next step
