This Homemade Fig Jam recipe is made with fresh figs, a touch of honey, a bit of lemon juice, and does not require additional pectin or gelatin. This easy, healthy, gluten-free and vegetarian fig jam recipe is great for breakfast on toast and biscuits, or served up on a cracker with goat cheese as a dinner party appetizer!
RECIPE: www.evolvingta...
INGREDIENTS:
1 lb. figs fresh*
¼ cup water
¼ cup honey or maple syrup
¼ cup coconut sugar, or regular sugar
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. vanilla
INSTRUCTIONS:
Wash figs and trim the stems.
Place figs in a large Nutribullet cup or in a large food processor with water. Pulse a few times until figs are mostly smooth with a few chunks left.
Add pureed figs to a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat with honey, coconut sugar, lemon juice, and salt. Bring mixture to a boil and cook over medium-high heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes or until figs have reduced by half.
During the last 1-2 minutes add vanilla and stir to combine.
Let fig jam cool before serving or storing in smaller 4-ounce and 8-ounce mason jars.
Serve fig jam on toast, biscuits, or on gluten-free crackers with goat cheese and enjoy!
RECIPE NOTES:
Brown turkey figs, black mission figs, and Adriatic figs work great in this recipe.
Some fig varieties may be sweeter or less sweet than those used in this recipe (brown turkey figs) and the amount of sugar may need to be adjusted.
Fig jam will last in the refrigerator without canning for up to 3 months, or on the shelf for up to 1 year if canned using a water bath.

I just picked our figs and made a double recipe of fig jam. It tastes wonderful. I will change the recipe a little by not adding 1/2 cup water for the double recipe because it had to cook almost an hour to remove enough water to make half the amount I started with. I would probably use 2 tablespoons per recipe. It tastes wonderful and my husband who doesn't like figs thinks it tastes great. Thanks for the recipe!

Hi Georgia! So happy to hear you enjoyed the recipe! And yes, some figs may contain more water, so you can adjust the amount you add accordingly! Thanks so much for your comment and feedback!

Made this 4 days ago, I had to triple the recipe - 3# figs off our tree in as many days! Very easy to make & follow this recipe as this is the first year for figs off our Kadota tree, we used Low Glycemic Coconut Palm sugar & saw another persons note about only using 1/4 C water - should've followed her lead, did not and was somewhat runny... Also took 5 hours to get it cooled down to get into jars. Decided to boil jars/lids & when I put them in the fridge - to my surprise found the jars had sealed, yay!! Love this Recipe so much!! Only got 2 tall jelly jars full, 1 pint jar full & another pint 2/3 full. Have you ever used other fruit in with this recipe? Such as Blueberries (off our bush) as our peach, nectarine & plum trees were bad this year due to the Joro spiders - so very sad :(. Thanks again!! Would love to know if you have a recipe for prickly pear jam too please?

Lemon juice adds a citric acid flavour which I do not enjoy in fig jam. To add acidity without changing the flavour try adding rhubarb, roughly 10% of the weight.

What a great idea! I have not thought to add rhubarb. Will definitely need to try it out and let you know how it goes 😀

Im going to make this! I made a pork tenderloin that had a sauce of apple, fig jam, red onions, and a balsamic glaze that was all sautéed together. It was heaven with the pork and your recipe will be PERFECT. Thank you for posting.

Thanks for bringing back childhood memories, London Brazil. Once a year, mother used to make large amounts of it over a wood fire outdoors, in a big ceramic cooking vessel. She would only break them up with a stirrer as they cooked; she added just sugar and a small amount of water. Since this was a much awaited event for me and my little siblings, cooking seemed to take endless hours, especially for us kids who would sit around and wait impatiently to have a feast. It would result in a semi coarse texture; definitely darker, harder and chunkier than yours, but still so delicious. Yours must taste even better with all the extra ingredients.

Oh what a wonderful memory! And cooking it over a wood fire would be so fun. Sounds like she definitely put a lot of love and TLC into that jam. Thanks for sharing such a special memory with me :)

I’m glad you didn’t make it too sweet because that would have been harder to watch. But I did like the tricks especially when it was done without all the overly sweet stuff sort of like if you put in way way too too much brown sugar and it starts to detract from the other high qualities of product and production. The fig jam I made before watching this was way way too sweet as well so I will make mine far less sweet just to protect the quality. Do you know what I mean because otherwise it was really good.

I’m partial to whole fig preserves, but this looks to be a more spreadable alternative for such things as toast, crackers, etc. Nearly all the recipes for preserves for 1 to 1 ratio of figs to sugar, i.e. 1 gal figs-1 gal sugar. Seems to me that figs are sweet enough on their own to warrant a seriously reduced amount of sugar. I finally, finally got a successful cutting from my grandparent’s million year old fig tree which has produced abundantly. If you’ve got a recipe for preserves, I’d love to see it. Thank you for your bubbly, entertaining presentations.

I snapped my fingers and cut myself on the knife EDIT: I can NOT believe how delicious this is! I added some Pectin to thicken it a bit and man it is GOOD!! Thanks for the awesome recipe! I used home grown turkey figs, had slightly over a pound and it turned out amazing! Also, instead of the lemon juice, I used lime juice, pretty much the same. Slather this on some celery and you have a sweet crunchy treat!

I do. I use dried figs with dried dates to make a spread. Put it through a strainer when it is thin to remove the seeds and then cook down. We use the jam in sweet bread recipes instead of sugar or honey.
