EV cars are an option at best but reality shows they will never be a replacement for many decades. I have thought of buying an electric vehicle but now know that it is not feasible for my use. I drive very little and I know batteries degrade, regardless if you use them or not. I would just not get the mileage out of the vehicle and therefore the savings, before it would need replacement.
@davidclemens157810 ай бұрын
@@FrankGallagherrYou will still have to replace the 12-volt battery, the tires, and there are still suspension components that will need replacing just like any other car. Many electric vehicles still have drive axles off the single motor, which may need to be replaced. And like any vehicle with many electronic sensors and components, such as the BMW ICE vehicles can go bad and fail. There are very few repair centers that work on electric vehicles but yes that number is growing, but they can pretty much name their price on a repair once your car is out of warranty. Most people that drive ICE vehicles will go to a smaller shop after their warranty has expired just to save money on repair costs. This will not be an option for most ice vehicle owners. Look at your electric vehicle like you would look at a old computer or TV, once they get old the apps and programs May no longer be supported and your option will be to replace it just like an old TV. I have an old web TV that I can no longer use it as a television but a monitor because Microsoft will no longer support the system. Luckily I have a old Blu-ray that has internet that gives me that ability to get some of the functions the TV used to. It amazes me that people are willing to take the financial risk of buying something that will be only useful for maybe 15 years years that is if all the support is there or if the company is even still in business. Everyone's thinking about the battery but this is something I have not seen anyone talking about.

I have had a Tesla for 2 years now. All of this is true and there is more. Do NOT buy an EV unless: 1. You are a homeowner and are willing to buy & install the proprietary fast (50 amp) charger in your garage. Do NOT buy an EV if you live in an apartment/condo-that’s called buying a nightmare. 2. all of your daily driving can be comfortably accomplished with less than half of the vehicle’s published range. In general half the published range is what you have to work with between keeping the battery between 80% & 20% and actually using heat/air conditioning. 3. You are comfortable paying more for insurance than you might for gas ($350/month through Tesla insurance, and that’s just for the Model Y). 4. Both you and your significant other aren’t absent-minded. The car needs constant stewardship to avoid damaging the battery and running the battery too close to 0% can damage it. You have to remember to plug it in every night. Missing even one night is a headache you don’t want. You can’t take it to the airport and leave it in the parking garage because a freeze will turn it into a brick. In general, your life becomes constantly being paranoid about the health of the battery and you never get to just park the car in the driveway and not think about it. 5. You are willing to spend $2,000 on tires every 2-3 years. No, we don’t drive crazy. 6. You are okay with service being VERY expensive for even minor things because your options are limited. Yeah, there’s some fun things and I don’t regret buying our Model Y, but at the same time I won’t get another EV. There are pros, but the cons outweigh the pros. Gonna get a non-hybrid Toyota next. The only battery I want in my next car is one I can buy at AutoZone and swap out myself. Update: another tire popped on the Tesla within 2 weeks of posting this, so that makes a consistent $1,000 per year in tires, a second time having a tow truck come to my house, and another loss of use of the car for 2 days. That was the last straw. We just went to a Toyota dealer and traded the Tesla in today, straight out of the shop. Good riddance.

Several of these are just not true depending on what model you buy or where you live. Service for my 2015 Kia Soul EV has been very cheap, and I haven’t had to replace the tyres yet. Our experience with 2020 Ioniq 5 seems similar so far. Owning an EV with an apartment is not a problem at all in much of Norway now. In 8 years the infrastructure has gone from zero to absolutely abundant. No reason to think it’ll be any different in other countries in another 8 year. The technology is cheaper and better now. There are still growing pains in the whole field of EVs, but it’s gotten much, much better in just the last 3 years. Of course, do some research before jumping into it. Like any other big purchasing decisions.

With the technology today ,a gas electric hybrid is a much more logical choice. You get very good mileage , lower emissions ,and you're not reliant on charging stations.
@sanketpathak80755 ай бұрын
No it isn't. Hybrid pushes the weight of it's other fuel opt on the primary one. This reduces efficiency.
@Trashed206593 ай бұрын
If you have a plug-in hybrid, you only get the stated maximum range by charging the car. If not a plug-in, your mpg goes up a little, but you still have all the same maintenance costs, plus any potential battery/electric drive train issues, few as they may be. As an apartment dweller, that may be the best choice, but not as a home owner who can reap the full benefits of an EV.

There's no need to blame Elon Musk for the failures of EVs. The problem is the government and corporatists keep pushing for a 100% EV world. In spite of EV problems, I believe there's room for these vehicles in the market and Musk himself has said that gas vehicles should not become obsolete. There's nothing wrong with being able to opt for gas, electric, hybrid, diesel, etc. We all make our choices based on our own purposes and desires. We rushed into E.V without allowing the technology to properly mature and develop further. Yes.. we will eventually run out of fossil fuels. Yes.. we do need to seek alternative fuel source for our daily mode of transportation. But not like this.. we should be more focused on futher increasing fuel efficiency in existing combustion vehicles and transition to hybrids. (Half gas/half electric) Then over time go from hybrid to full electric. But we didn't because many wanted to get rich quick by jumping onto the next big thing. Wanting to be the first. And it was all about making as much money as possible. It was never about the environment, the climate or our future. It was all about prestige and profits. I have nothing against E.V technology. There is a genuine need for an alternative fuel source. But this change will have to happen organically and not be forced. E.V tech needs to develop for another 20 to 30 years atleast before it can trully be utilized. By then we can revisit the idea and try to re-intergrate it into our lives. For now we'll just have to smoke crack and run everywhere..

@@BuilderofRat Have you checked your lungs,bloodstream, and brain for nano-carbon particles? Everyone is susceptible to these since there is no dilution of these particles to zero in the atmosphere, in particular, produced by diesel engines. Escape from a burning EV is more likely than from an ICE with a tank of volatile petrol. Google "Rainbow Bridge car explosion" It was in the news about 2 months ago. I assume that you believe that it's the battery that is causing the burning of EVs. You likely have the same batteries in cameras, ipods, ipads, laptops, etc carried in your own car or at home. Same risk? A friend's farm tractor, ICE of course, caught fire and burnt the whole garage. Not sure what other vehicles were involved. My dad was always warning ud that if we were caught stalled somewhere on the road, to wind the windows down a few inches. Unfortunately, the son, 18 year old, of a cousin was asphyxiated from a lack of doing just that. Not all smokers have or get lung cancer, but the statistics prove the connection. Some day, driving an ICE vehicle will be shunned the same way, sociologically, as a person today is if they smoke in an elevator. No one is forcing anyone to drive EVs. I just wonder why the ICE crowd are on these sites trying to convince the EV bunch that driving EV is for the birds. You would thing that they did care about what we own and drive. By the way, I own 8 ICE cars which are driven very sparingly. I suspect that they will enhance a museum's collection someday. The swich to EVs is coming whether we object or not. They are cleaner and cheaper, if not today, will be shortly in the long run. The Chinese EV market will overtake any and all of the so called Big Three' businesses because of pricing. Much of the legacies' products are not manufactured in the USA, even. Tesla has most percentage component structure of any USA manufacturer for their cars. How long do you think that crude is going to last? It might be a little less selfish to save a bit for future genarations to manufacture other objects than those for simple transportation, particularly when there are alternatives. I'd bet that you drive a pickup for basic transportation. What could be more fuel ineficient than one of those? It's almost as if pickup owners have to get to more than their share of crude before someone else does. Have you ever driven an EV? Indeed , electric cars have less range , cost more in the first place, and last half as long , because you can guarantee, when that EV runs out of warranty down the track , and the battery range has degraded , no one in their right mind will want to spend anything from $20,000to $60,000 bucks on a replacement battery on an 8 + year old shitbox EV. In comparison a good well maintained ICE car with minimal maintenance cost could last 15 to 30 + years. And this brings up the question, what's greener and better value , an ice Car that could last potentially 30 years or more if looked after , or an expensive EV that will likely be sent to the wreckers in a much much shorter period of time , and which is better value ? because no one will want to buy an older EV with a degraded battery.

A few copies of a high tech item is amazing when its "entire" cost of production, overhaul, modification and repair gets pushed aside to facilitate govt subsidies, reelection donations to politicians and tax detection incentives. A very important reason people are shying away from EV's in my opinion is that they start to realise that they've been told only half of the story of EV's. And that half is the positive side of EV's. As more people have now used EV's as daily drivers, more and more of the negative side comes to light. A recent study found that electric cars release more toxic emissions than gas powered vehicles and are worse for the environment. Electric vehicles also present safety concerns. Reduced range in cold weather when heat and window defrosting are required will discourage their use, decreasing visibility and putting lives at risk, especially on longer trips. If EV gets stuck, stranded in a snowstorm, or slides off road, heat will not be maintainable. If stuck in a traffic jam in summer heat, air conditioning will not be usable and will be used less often in general, to maintain range. Opening windows increases vehicle drag and reduces efficiency. Drivers are also less alert when uncomfortable and arrive at destinations annoyed, possibly requiring a shower, if available. This is not good for the professional traveler attending a business negotiation or meeting. EV fires are very difficult to extinguish. An EV traffic jam fire in a confined area could be horrific. The study found that brakes and tires release 1,850 times more particulate matter than the exhaust of modern gas powered vehicles. EVs weigh about 30 percent more than gas cars, causing brakes and tires to wear more quickly, releasing increased particulates into the atmosphere. Particle pollution can increase health problems including heart disease, asthma and lung disease. More total energy is also required to perform the equivalent work with an EV. Extracting one ton of lithium requires about 500,000 liters of water and produces large quantities of mineral waste. Mining the cobalt used in EV batteries emits toxic chemicals and gases that leak into the environment, and extracting metals from the ore emits sulfur oxide and pollutes the air. Vulnerable people are exploited to secure these resources. Actually, EVs are not in any way simpler than a conventional vehicle , for a start the battery packs are composed of thousands of single cells with every cell and it's connection being a potential fail point , add to that , it still has gears(not in a conventional sense)and lubricants , it has multiple cooling systems and battery thermal systems , multiple charging systems , and then everything is run by computers and sensors , Make no mistake there is nothing simple about electric cars ! And they still have brakes, suspension, steering , electric motors, wipers ,Masses of electric solenoids to open and close stuff , and these things are heavier than a conventional vehicle, so you can expect your tyres to wear faster. And we haven't even got to the bit about how the battery has to be pandered to so it degrades at a slower rate , or all the other charging cons or the mediocre range from the very beginning. And I could go on , you couldn't pay me to own one of these things.

Then there's the fact that the batteries are fragile, one 35 mph crash and the batteries are potentially compromised. Lithium battery packs can't be plugged in overnight or risk waking up to an angry, raging fire . Power outtage severely reduces your ability to charge up . The more electric vehicles there are , the more inefficient charging becomes because the electrical grid for one , can't handle the increased load and electricity will have to be made from diesel generators . @@robertkubrick3738epic battery issues are not that common, they are not something most drivers deal with as part of owning an EV. Further battery prices are now dramatically lower than they once were and the cost will continue to go lower as packs are now produced in the millions. By the time my battery might need replacing in 10 years or so the replacement cost could easily be less under %25 from what it was when my pack was new in 2022.

@@MarkMaxwell-author WRONG! Battery packs develop faults. There are sensors and there are about 15,000 electrical connections in each pack any one of which can require replacement with a rebuilt pack Cobbled together from MULTIPLE Already FAILED packs. He gets to buy the next pack and it's equal to the value or possibly more than the value of his car now. That's for another pack Cobbled together from MULTIPLE failed packs, what could go wrong? The unreliable charging network is definitely one of the biggest gripes for a lot EV owners out there if you don't use a Tesla (or have a home charger installed). If I dig around for non-Tesla EV chargers on PlugShare in my city, the most common problems I find reported are: - Charger has no power or is faulty. - Charger doesn't activate/start charging or doesn't let you pay. - Charger is blocked by ICE vehicles. - Charger is derated (has much less charging power than advertised). - Charging cables or connectors are cut off (seriously?). - Can't use the charger because it is not open to the public (i.e. it's only for staff/employee use at whatever establishment the charger is located at). Apparently Tesla seems to be the only EV maker to have a pretty reliable charging network (maybe at most 1 or 2 charging stalls don't work per location at some point, but that's not really a huge problem) although at the moment there's only 2 Tesla Supercharger locations in the entire city (one with 12 charging stalls, another with 8).

true. friend of mine works a major rental car company and says the EV's are the biggest pain in the ass to deal with. 1. cost for body repair is 3 times more and takes 3 time longer due to expensive parts IF they are available. a hood for a Polstar cost 15k - yeah. if an EV has body damage, the electronics behind the panels get damaged and cost a crap-load to fix. 2. software glitches, tesla's will shut down and won't turn back on after a "required" update. 3. EV's chew up tires 3 times faster thus having to be replaced at 10k miles usually. 4. tesla's have poor build quality: interior is "snap together" and breaks often. 5. range is poor, way under what's advertised. mostly because the more "electricity" you use (ac, lights, charging phones, on board cameras, etc). 6. tesla's HVAC system is designed weird, the filter is under the condenser thus dripping water onto it making the AC smell like a$$. ...and everything else mentioned in the video. tesla's charging stations are far superior to the rest, even though other manufacturers EV's are built better they are difficult to charge unless you can plug it in at home.

What really kills the deal with EV is range anxiety. When you got stuck in the rush hour traffic in the middle of freeway in a hot sunny day that requires a full blown A/C running, the last thing you need is keep looking at the screen and check how many more minutes before your battery dies. So you think this won’t happen in cold winter day? Guess what, some EV can’t even start and loose capacity overnight when it is freezing cold. EV is a completely scam. For the people just got their first EV, you just pay a very expensive price for a stupid lesson. For the family with more than one EV, your investment will drop down fast like Tesla stock. EV will be eventually vanished.
