My mother and I are lifetime Catholics. She belonged to a single parish her whole life, and it is my childhood church. I was not allowed to give a eulogy at her funeral mass because the funeral home said the Diocese of Providence does not allow eulogies at funerals to avoid issues. I did give a eulogy at the funeral home though prior to heading to the church. I got to think that such a policy in New York City may have mitigated some of this.

I think the priest did his best to manage this horrible situation that could have easily escalated to a riot. Many of the participants were probably on drugs or coming off drugs, mentally ill etcetera. If provoked in any way this gathering of people could have wrecked the cathedral…… The priest cut the service as short as possible and manage to avoid exposing the eucharistic Sacrament to abuse. He got the crowd out of the church without further damage….. This shows how important it is to not live in a bubble. The funeral should have been denied (the person wasn’t a parish member or believing catholic) or planned differently. Such a crowd should have stayed outside the church. It reminds me of the difficulties Italian churches have faced for funerals of maffia bosses. There has been some scandals that made the international news. I don’t know how the issue has been solved or what the policy is today

It seems to me that if the obituary was in the paper 5 days before the funeral that there was no way that the Cathedral and the Archdiocese didn’t know that this funeral was problematic. They let it go out of fear of cancelling. They did not have proper custody of the sacredness of the Church in mind and underestimated the boldness of the activists at their door. This was in miniature a case study of the failure of contemporary Catholicism’s modus operandi

This is a "he said, she said" type of situation where we who were not there must refrain from making specific judgments about the priest, the archdiocese and the pope, and making recommendations on what sort of severe punishments they all deserve. We can be saddened and sickened that this happened, but that's it. Leave the judgements and punishments to those who know exactly what happened. Maybe they knew who this person was, but were under the impression that it was going to be a small funeral attended only by close family and friends. That was what they said, didn't they? That they were deceived into thinking the funeral service was only going to be an intimate one. Again, we don't know, so we should stop saying things like "They failed out of fear" and so forth. This person was baptized Catholic, he deserves a Catholic funeral, no? A lot of people are saying that an atheist sex worker doesn't deserve a Catholic funeral, but we cannot judge after death. Who knows? This person might've repented at the time of death. I am sickened that this happened, yes, but I am also sickened by the reactions of many Catholics who are ready to burn alive the priest, the archdiocese and even the pope for this. Really? You all think you're a thousand times holier than everyone else?

Yes sister,it also made me sick to my stomach. I wish I could say I was shocked however I saw the behavior of the group that defiled Jesus at dodgers stadium this past summer. Now they have found their way into an iconic cathedral in New York. What will it take for the hierarchy of the church to stop this madness? This is so destructive to those of us who revere our faith and try to live by gospel truth. Do those in charge have any idea how pandering to these ideologies is destroying the faith? Do they care?

This is one of 2 sacrilegious outrages I have seen in recent weeks. The other was a YT from another Catholic parish church asking why it was losing members, then went to answer their own question. They then showed the altar draped in the demonic rainbow flag, and a trans ''woman'' taking part as a reader. I would change parishes if where I attend committed such sacrilege. I go to church to attend a reverent celebration of the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass, not a drag show or ''pride rally''. However re St Patricks I accept Card Dolan was invincibly ignorant and he did order a Mass of reparation be held. I hope he censuresthe priests who participated. I have no doubt that had this happened in the time of the great St JPII. He would have been SHOCKED and heads woulds have rolled.

I’ve been to many funeral masses where the priest reminds the congregation that no one is guaranteed a place in heaven .. and that was said when a devout Catholic was laid to rest! Imagine! I wish this priest had rose up and said and did the right thing. Doesn’t matter if there were over 2,000 participants there and he was terrified of what would have happened. Priests are to defend our Church and faith no matter what the threat may be!
