@gordonj22986 жыл бұрын
It's a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) for trains - put one of these on the front and it'll store energy as it's braking, which could then be used to accelerate the train away from stations again.
@jpal006 жыл бұрын
Why not put it in a loco then? Or, in case of electric trains, to the trackside? I mean, you won't recover a great deal of energy from a light trailer and you lose the passenger space inside. And there is a reason why the Formula 1 KERS systems went electric, I think.
@gordonj22986 жыл бұрын
It's an R&D project. In the same way that a loco can move a whole train, correct tuning of energy recovery on one vehicle could recover kinetic energy from the momentum of the whole train, if it's set to brake earlier than the friction brakes. You'll have seen the addition of tanks under the floor (where the diesel tanks usually are on diesel locos) and the details say that there are hydraulics added onto the axles (which in a diesel-electric loco will have motors attached too). As a technical demonstrator, this can demonstrate whether (or not!) the recovery technology is viable in a controlled environment with plenty of space to play about with and undertake the development work, and in a relatively cheap vehicle (without sacrificing a working locomotive). If it works, it may well end up on locos in the future though.
@jpal006 жыл бұрын
OK I understand. By the note about light trailer I meant it doesn't have enough potential adhesion to brake the train (locos are usually heavier, about twice as much - even then it takes about 3-5 km to get a train from 0-200 km/h, but only about 1-2 km to stop it). But if it could be potentially fitted on a loco or a DMU, fair enough. BTW, how big are the energy storage tanks?

peter smith it’s a test mule for the technology paid for by Artemis to be used,if tests are successful, in modern trains, no doubt funding other projects such as the Brighton Belle. JCB engines do the job for testing and use up very little room in a chassis not designed for an engine.

Possibly the most ridiculous heap of junk they have come up with yet. But rest assured there will be more dopey idea's to come when all that needed to be done was find a new push pull diesel loco and overhaul the mk3 stock (like chiltern have) to meet modern specs.
Still uses a diesel engine. Still less efficient than electric tech. Still hasn't improved on the fact that a nuclear power station is a glorified way to boil water to make steam to turn a turbine generator to make the electricity to run a railway and entire country. Problem not solved. Got an award. Inb4 - Please clap.
