The first time I saw this I wondered if Marko was OK. It wasn't only the expression on his face, it was the fact that he was sweating profusely. I like this song, though it will never make my top five. I thought Annette did a good job, but, for me, Emppu stole the show. There is just nothing he can't do. And, have fun doing it.

The atmosphere of this song is incredible, it feels like film noir, I think of a private investigator sitting in his smokey office on the second floor above a jazz club... Then that familiar Nightwish orchestration kicks in with the gothic choir, and oh, that's right. It's funny that this song comes right before I Want My Tears Back on the album, the shift in energy is massive, and it works, they know how to take you on a ride.

I love this song, when I listened to the album the first time it was a beautiful slow surprise. I like how half of it feels, at least for me, comforting (really really enjoying the bass tone) and then after Emppu's solo it's suddenly sinister and kind of threatening. I'm sure there's a musical reason for it but someone smarter will have to explain it. Thanks for the reaction, it was fun to watch.

Probably my favourite live performance from Anette with professional recording (there are some fan cam ones I really wish we had in high quality). Anette got short shrift because she was so different to Tarja and couldn't do most of Tarja's songs justice, but she had a unique voice of her own. (One of Floor's big advantages is that she can do justice to NW's entire catalogue, even if there are some songs where I prefer the original with Tarja or Anette.) Anette tends to shine on the more ballady ones like this, _Eva,_ _Meadows_ _of_ _Heaven,_ _Turn_ _Loose_ _the_ _Mermaids,_ or _The_ _Crow,_ _the_ _Owl_ _and_ _the_ _Dove._ Plus _Scaretale,_ which is an outlier whichever way you look at it!

Yeah i agree, the shit people throw on Annette is way out of proportion. I'm a total fanboy for Floor but i'm sick and tired of the Floor vs Tarja vs Annette arguments, all 3 brought smth different to NW and many of the songs from Annette's time with them are immensely popular nowadays.

i agree, even though i'm a total fanboy for Floor i think Annette gets roasted way out of proportion many times. Sure, she is no Tarja or Floor but they are quite exceptional both of them, Tarja with the operatic skills and Floor with her insane range and versatility. Annette was still a good singer, just not exceptional. And they did put out so many great songs during her time with them.

Yeah, this is a departure from "Symphonic Metal". This style is "Jazz Noir", or sometimes called "Dark Jazz". They style isn't true Jazz in the same way Nightwish isn't "classical" despite the similarities in song structure. You're more likely to find this style written for things like horror movies. This incidentally was written for a somewhat disturbing scene in their movie, so it fits. It's a great style for creating a haunting and intimate atmosphere. The lyrics on this are awesome. The line "Intoxicated by a major chord", very well-written, one of my favorite lyrical lines, and the delivery is perfect. Anette is the most under-rated of their singers. She doesn't have the range and power of the other two, but she has a talent for nuance, and bringing exactly the right emotion to the lyrics she sings. She always comes off like she's more connected to the song, which is a hard property to quantify, but one audiences innately pick up on, and it makes a world of difference. This will definitely be an acquired taste for many metal heads. The bass will captivate metal audiences, but the rest will take some getting used to. But a lot of that is timing... being in the right mood for the song when you hear it. I recommend listening over a rocks bourbon, when you're ready to just unwind and relax... those times when you need to shift gears from frenetic to pensive, lol.

I was and am not a big fan of Annette in Nightwish, but that's just me. I have to admit, that she nailed this one. Plus a few more, especially on the "Imaginaerum" album (which suits her in general better than "Dark Passion Play" imo). About Marko during the show in Montreux there are a few things I think about it: 1) Montreux Jazz Festival has definitely a more Jazz/Blues-Rock oriented direction. Only a couple of years earlier they started to invite one or two Metal bands per year to open up to this genre. Since 2002 played there: Slayer, Soulfly, Korn, Alice Cooper, Fantomas, Eagles Of Death Metal, Queens Of The Stoneage, Deftones, Heaven & Hell, Motörhead, Saxon, Guano Apes. Nightwish was the only Metal band in 2012. And as far as I know, they didn't even play a fulltime concert. You can imagine, that there were not so many real fans in the crowd, especially also because you will have a hard time finding a free hotel room in the whole area there during the time of the festival. 2) This took place in July, and as we now know, Annette left the band due to irreconcilable differencies with the other bandmembers by end of September. I don't know, how many of these differencies already existed at that point. But maybe...

I like Slow Love Slow. I visualize Tuomas (Keyboards) writing the song thinking about his method of constructing his music in his slow thoughtful and very creative way. After Floor took over on the World tour she started singing it in the concerts, but later it was dropped from the regular setlist. She has sung it in her solo concerts, and does it justice. Here is a pretty good Fan cam of Floor sing Slow Love Slow with Nightwish only a couple of weeks after joining the band on tour. She adds a very sexy, sultry style and powerful ending vocals that have a very Pink Floyd feel, Marko seems to be having more fun and jokes in his intro, Jukka is intense with his brushes on the drums behind Floor, and Emppu has fun with the audience doing his blues style solo. This is the perfect song for Anette, Tuomas is brilliant at writing the right song for each singer, this is such a divergance for NW but a brilliant song, and Anette is outstanding here, her voice is so sultry and sensual, I love this song so much, it was fun for the whole band, Emppu had to learn to play Jazz, Jukka kept it simple with the brushes and Marcos walking bass is wonderful, Tuomas playing a relatively simple repeated refrain just underpinned it perfectly. This is why Nightwish as the top of the hill, they can play anything and do it better than most. Big love Brother

Nightwish, developing a new subgenre called jazz metal??? 😂 Tuomas is a really good composer, I admire his creativity and innovation. In the music school that Tuomas attended when he was young, he studied not only classical music but also a little jazz. Maybe it helped him in making this song? The saxophone that Tuomas practiced in his youth was also connected to playing jazz music. Kai Hahto (NW's current drummer) was a drummer in a jazz band in France in his youth, so he was able to advise Jukka Nevalainen on playing jazz.

The song is from the album / film music Imaginaerum. The scene takes place in a jazz bar and is about the relationship between father and daughter from the father's perspective. Slow Love refers to the fact that the father needs time to overcome the shadows of his own childhood. Unfortunately he doesn't succeed and the relationship fails. Tuomas probably wrote the song this way so that Anette could fully exploit her strengths. But it remained the only jazz song. Still, I prefer Floor's version. Her more balanced voice fits better with the required slow love, here in the Amsterdam concert: Floor Jansen - Slow, Love, Slow (Live) The song was only played on the Imaginaerum Tor, Floor mainly used it on her first solo tour.

Anette was unfortunate to be the buffer between Tarja and Floor. Tarja has so many old fans who can't accept change and she never did in five albums because she couldn't. Hence the reason, or one of them, for her sacking. Tuomas needed something different so hired a pop singer who made his next two albums sound so different. Better no, different yes and commercial yes but it meant they struggled with a live set as virtually all of the Tarja songs were beyond her and she did have tuning issues even on some of her own songs.

Oooooh yes! There's a lot of songs that weren't written for Floor that she can nail, but there's a few songs from both the Tarja and Anette eras of the band that simply belong to Tarja + Anette. This song 100% Anette's imo and it's one of their best ballad-type songs. Anette got a bad rap sometimes for not being as great of a singer, but as this video shows, she has a great voice, it's just a lot more pop rock-y and the songs have to be compatible with her style for it to work well live.
