“Oh my God! You’re so grumpy, but you saved my day.” I’ve been on both sides of this. When I’m on the Noob-side (because I’m completely lost!) I am THAT appreciative of the help from peers. When I’m on the Pro-side (because I’ve made the mistakes, someone showed me how to fix it, or I kept at it till I figured it out) I’m usually juggling a lot of things. I recognized the “attitude” as frustration in wanting to help a peer while dealing with time constraints. We asked, were helped, we learned, and we passed it on to the next person. Great information and presentation and THEATER in your work. Thank you.

Hi Leila and team. I gotta say, I didn't expect to be the excel go to person in the company I work for. But, one video after another, I got better and better working with Excel, doing my thing, getting all my documents sharper and more efficient to the point where high level management noticed. The result ...not only did I got promoted from team lead to a management position, I was also tasked with training team leaders, managers and high level executives on Excel for the entire company. Here I am, almost no education, and people rely on me for excel training ... and I blame you for that 😂!! Thanks.

I work for a large organization, during a regional meeting, an accountant was explaining a process she uses. One of the steps was to get data from the previous months spreadsheet. I was suprised when she started the vlookup formula. After the meeting I emailed her a suggestion that she use xlookup instead. I was suprised to see she had not heard if xlookup. Thank you for your videos and keeping us informed!
@LeilaGharani2 жыл бұрын
🙌 we need to spread the word.
@j.ballsdeep4202 жыл бұрын
I mean if she makes it work it's doing the same thing so long as data you need isn't on the left, laugh, but she probably uses a regular lookup with combo of index/match if she knows vlookup, in which case you wouldn't be wrong that it would be _easier_ to learn xlookup. Just saying if you're array lookup and return is in one column then it's literally no difference. Also, using PowerQuery for the connection to the folder containing each month's reporting so she could open her file and it would automatically load said data without ever needing to add a formula in the steps (assuming you have your preference for the query to refresh upon opening). 😉
@j.ballsdeep4202 жыл бұрын
This is why I hate explaining my process to an open room like a regional meeting or national (and don't). I never share my recipe unless in safe, closed door meetings with allies who are open to discussion rather than just assuming I should do something different cause I know a different way to do it. Only rubs me wrong cause you say she should use it instead when there are still reasons for using lookup, index/match, hlookup, or vlookup, or frankly maybe comfort with doing what's normal and maybe it doesn't matter if she's getting what she needs. Just saying that criticism, whether constructive or not, isn't always conveyed or received positively and comes across more like a critique to her process when there was no mention of her requesting your critique: tl;dr, you could come across like a dick providing feedback where it wasn't requested. Hopefully she learns to not share her recipe unless she's fine with your unsolicited suggestion of what to do instead of what she already is

I tried xlookup a few times and it works great. However, my company has some branches on older versions of Excel (xlookup doesn't exist in their version). If I send them a spreadsheet with xlookups, they just see errors. Because of this, I went back to index/match formulas to ensure compatibility.

Well unless you used the full file name in your array lookup it would break the same way for them as they wouldn't have your array workbook open, laugh. Either way, why would you be sending a file with calculations being done outside the workbook you're sending? Just save your file as CSV or create a new workbook pasting as values matching type.

Have you tried using table, row reference rather than absolutes, and referring to #ALL and header to only check the table and not the 107k rows or whatever it is standard for a worksheet? I have many calculations that go upward of 50k rows and calculation is -maybe- 5sec tops? I did have a bit more calculation time referencing the column absolute in my array lookup step, though

Back in the day when I was managing thousands of products in multiple tabs, I wish I had known about X-LOOKUP. I used to write macros to rearrange the raw data (A daily download from SAP), then run macros using VLOOKUP, to compare actuals orders and shipments in the quarter to quarterly plan and quarterly forecast totals to complete my variance reports. XLOOKUP would have saved me days of work every quarter to update macros and testing to assure accuracy.

Hi Leila, great video, as always :) thanks! I've got a question about lookup functions working with two workbooks - as it's is clearly visible in 4:01, once you are going from first workbook to the second, Excel 'keeps' vlookup formula in formula bar expecting table array. However, it happened to me many times, especially when I was working on large files, that when I was trying to select table array in the another file (not this one where I put formula) Excel was 'losing' the formula. I still could select some table array within this workbook where I put the formula , but not from the another workbook. It was like two workboooks that Excel couldn't connect through vlookup function. The solution that helped here was to close all excel workbooks ad open them again, but I'm wondering have You experienced such problem and have better solution? :)

INDEX() + MATCH() has been my go-to since it became available. I can't recall when I last used VLOOKUP(). XLOOKUP() is pretty cool, but INDEX() + MATCH() (plus a little error handling with IFNA()) has the benefit of being backward compatible for about 20 years of Excel versions.
