Awesome! We copy text data (stress values in different directions) from an engineering simulation program and copy/paste into Excel. It is just a run-on of text and all of it is in one column. I think it is formatted as in FORTRAN 77: 80 columns but all slammed into one column in Excel. OMG. Well, you did it again, Chandoo: this will work to segregate the text. Great video as usual! Textjoin is awesome! Do you think this formula will considerably slow down a sheet if it is run across multiple rows? (Volatile vs non-volatile) I'm currently pasting a small chunk of text (~20 rows) into a worksheet, running Textsplit() and then recombining everything with Textjoin() and a little Concat(). Sometimes the Textsplit() will not even notice there's something in the cells and the sheet stops updating. But when it works it is wonderful! 😊

I have used this with datasets upto 50,000 rows with no significant slowdowns. That said, if you have a lot of text in each cell, or if this is a one time task, use Power Query to split things.

My textsplit didnt work for this data. 281000-10-99-10. do you know which function i can use to split them into 4 columns and remove -( dashes).

The last tip is fantastic. Thank you. I did not realize you could use multiple potential text separators. Do you have advice for separating lists of names where some names are like Mary Brody and others are like Mary Margaret Brody?

Thank you. In such cases, if we assume the first word is first name and last word is last name, then, you can use the TEXTBEFORE and TEXTAFTER functions to extract the words. For example, if B2 has "Mary Margaret Brody" =TEXTBEFORE(B2," ") =TEXTAFTER(B2," ",-1) give you Mary and Brody respectively.
