Rwandan media played a key role in fomenting ethnic divisions and sowing the seeds of mass slaughter in the years leading up to - and the 100 days of - the 1994 genocide.

When the Belgians colonized Rwanda, they judged the Tutsi to be racially superior to the Hutu and placed them in positions of power. So there were generations of violent resentment toward the Tutsi that culminated in genocide.
@princessdior9
@princessdior9 6 жыл бұрын
Actually Germans, Rwanda's colonizers, exasperated the divide between hutus and tutsis. They favored the Tutsi ruling class and promoted the racist Hamitic theory, which was one of the main justifications Hutus used for the genocide. The the Belgians made all this worse when they took over. They actually made Hutus and tutsi into ethnic entities, where before it was mostly economic and cultural status. Belgians made it policy that Rwandans had to carry identifications of whether they were Hutu or Tutsi, similar to apartheid.The French who had their own interests, financed the supply of weapons to Hutus before and DURING the genocide. So yes, actually these Western powers and their imperialist actions laid the groundwork for the genocide which too place, and what more they barely lifted a finger to stop it - which is just as complicit.

@@AB-80X These people were their neighbors right? Did Hutus and Tutsis tend to not interact or intermarry? How did they dehumanize people to the point where they could butcher and mutilate them like that? It's all so confusing to me. I remember watching CNN at the time and they had set up a camera alongside a river and you just see body after body go floating by. The brutality was just unreal.
@AB-80X
@AB-80X 4 жыл бұрын
@@lovedicedtomatoes9653 The dehumanizing really started after WW1. When the Belgians took over, they put the Tutsis in charge. At the same time Phrenology was all the rage in Europe, and the Tutsis were by the Belgians basically told they were dark skinned white people. This meant that for decades, the Tutsi minority along with the Catholic church undermined and suppressed the Hutu majority. This was amplified by the Belgians, as this was sort of what also happened in Belgium between the Valonians and Flanders. Belgians were used to a system where the minority of people ruled, and they ran Ruanda like that. Then later on when the Hutus had had enough in the 60's, they ceased power as Ruanda stopped being under Belgian rule. Now the Tutsi hate went full force, and Hutu Power came to be. Fast forward 30 years and Rwanda was in turmoil as outside Tutsis wanted to establish a nation for both Tutsis and Hutus. Add to this the fact that the Frensh were allies with the Hutu Rwandan government, and Paul Kagames army was Anglican. France wanted to keep Rwanda "French", and it was seen as a shameful loss if yet another African country started to spsak English rather than French. Therefore, France supported the former Rwandan presidency and government, thus creating an unstable situation where the Rwandan government army as well as Ineramwe received both training and weapons. Add to this that in '92, Butrus Butrus-Gali heloed the Rwandan government purchase an insane amount of illegal weapons from Egypt. Funny where that man was later in charge... Anyway, the hate towards the Tutsis had been brewing for 30 years, Interahamwe and Hutu Power was recruiting unemployed and bored young men like there was no tomorrow, so it was a pressure cooker. Then in early '94 massive storages of weapons and machetes from China was set up, and local Interahamwe and Hutu Power leaders were told to be on standby. Then on April 7 '94 the Rwandan army shot down the presidents plane, but blamed RPF. This was the signal to start the extermination of the Tutsis. So as you can see, many things conspired to set off this chain of events and the hate had 70 years to grow.

@@AB-80X Thank you for such a detailed answer. You are obviously extremely knowledgeable about what happened. I read that Rwanda experienced massive population growth in the decades before the genocide. I wonder if this rapid population growth led to destabilization and competition for resources, jobs, overcrowding, etc. In Syria, before the recent civil war, the population had increased around 8 fold in 50 years, which led to a lot of tension, especially when the drought struck. I'm wondering about the psychology of those who could hack a baby with a machete. To do something that monstrous, and for it to be so widespread with so many people participating- I just can't understand how so many got to be that hateful, that cruel. Did any priests participate in the genocide? Did the church condemn what was happening? Was Rwanda a Christian nation? Were the participants ostensibly Christian? And finally, I read that some of the Tutsi rebels had been given barracks in the capital or something like that as part of the peace accord- and then the plane was shot down. Do you know what happened to the Tutsi rebels who were in the capital as part of the peace accord- did they immediately flee?

@Koal Kottentail Thank you. Do you ever wonder what it would take to take a machete to a crying baby? People who did that are still alive. And it was done on a massive scale. I wonder if the people who did that feel shame. All the raping and murder and mutilating and torture. How do so many people who probably seem normal now do such unspeakable things? That is what I can't understand. Most Africans I meet seem like friendly people. I bet Rwanda is no different. So how do nice people get turned into monsters?

It's a toxic combination of beliefs and attitudes that precipitate genocide. Usually, the group that commits genocide feels aggrieved/victimized by the group it targets. The group that commits genocide views the target group as the source of its oppression and as possessing unearned power and unfair advantage. The group that commits genocide also typically correlates material success and power that it attributes to the target group with inherent moral, spiritual, and cultural inferiority.

Fun fact; one of the RTLM staffers was a white man by the name of George's Ruggiu who claims to be Italian but was born in Belgium, he inserted himself into Rwandan politics two years before the genocide and promoted hate and violence against the Tutsi people. He got 12 years in prison in 2000 for his part in the genocide, was shipped back to Italy and was released early in 2009 by the Italian government, violating the original sentence and so is now a free man. A piece of shit lunatic who got a lucky break because he never actually dirtied his own cowardly hands, or perhaps a faithful dog of certain former colonial powers who served time quietly for them.

For those asking "how" and "why" this happened, the explanation is longwinded but pretty straightforward. The Belgians instituted a racial code by taking two preexisting ethnic designations that were originally determined by lifestyle (Hutus were farmers and Tutsis were herders), and turning them explicitly genetic designations. It just so happened that Tutsis tended to be taller and lighter-skinned than Hutus, and the ruling Kingdom that was there when the Europeans seized the land was Tutsi. The colonizers perceived this to mean that Tutsis were closer to "white" than the Hutus, and thus they were "natural rulers." So the Belgians declared that all lightskinned and tall Rwandans were Tutsi, and the remaining majority Hutu. They then employed the Tutsi in the colonial government and treated Tutsi slightly less awful than the Hutu. The Rwandan Genocide was a direct result of racial tensions manufactured and actively stoked by the Belgian colonial government that festered for decades after independence. The Hutu-ruled dictatorship that rose after independence would regularly use the specter of a Tutsi coup bringing back the colonial government to keep the people in line and shore up its popularity. On the eve of the genocide, Rwanda had suffered an economic downturn, and Tutsi refugees in Uganda had formed a rebel army to invade Rwanda. The rebels had no intention of restoring the colonial government, just toppling the dictatorship and instituting multiparty democracy. Things came to a head with the still unsolved 1994 assassination of the Rwandan President, whose plane was shot down. That was the spark that lit the powderkeg that the regime and pro-government media had filled and primed over several years.
