In a previous video, we looked at the early history of the Falkland Islands; rival claims to its sovereignty and the status quo leading into the modern era. In this short extract from our full length video on Margaret Thatcher, we look at the emerging post colonial landscape and the political and economic triggers that led to the conflict between Argentina and the UK in 1982

Very nicely done. But I think it would be even better if you could go into more detail and make a longer video.

It is an excerpt from the full length video on Margaret Thatcher, so it necessarily was short, though there is another excerpt (also from that video) on the colonial history of the Falklands

Sadly the issue of Falklands has become a major part of Argentina's national identity. I have lost count on how many mentions of Las Malvinas I saw every day staying in Buenos Aires (BA) and some other parts of Argentina. From memory every public bus in BA has the islands drawn on the back, natural science museum in La Plata makes sure to include the tiny islands on every map of South America, Boca Juniors football fans chanting about it in the stadium, mentions in songs and popular media, various graffiti around town as well signs with distance markers pointing to them, small parks and plazas named dedicated to the heroes of the war in Falklands. Hilariously enough our guide to Cerro Uritorco (a famous peak "frequented by aliens") pointed at a small lake (Lago El Cajón) saying that it looks just like the left Falklands island. People are very much living with this national tragedy, unable to move on. The sinking of Belgrano conspiracy lives on, as well as claims that it was all United States' fault or the claim by the former president Fernandez that Falklands belong to Argentina because they are connected by continental shelf.. Heard it all speaking to people out there. Honestly it's extremely sad and disheartening. To me this is no better than Russia claiming that they are not complete without Crimea, or China suffering the "horrible trauma" of living without controlling Taiwan. Does every militaristic nation needs an enemy or injustice to united them? I hope that's not the case.

to confuse Argentina-Malvinas with Russia-Crimea or China-Taiwan is to show off a huge ignorance in geopolitics. maybe read more and write less?

Appreciate the reply@@fcsoldeu5338! This was the attitude of most Argentinians when talking about this issue. I also heard the words "eurocentric", "racist", "ignorant" flung in my direction with little explanation behind them. It's a very emotional issue for people out there.

One of the many pointless wars of the 20th century. The lives lost were worth far more than the rescue of reputations for either Argentina's generals or Britain's Thatcher.

A fair assessment, though the islanders themselves probably don't (didn't) see it that way. I thought it was interesting to assess their claims to self-determination against the broader backdrop of decolonisation and sovereignty that was a huge element of UN policy at the time. It was also ironic that the UK was long trying to offload the islands to Argentina anyway but were continually frustrated by locals sabotaging the process. There's never anything simple about politics.

@@heroesandlegends Definitely correct. I know I have been seriously offended when I feel invested in a conflict and someone dismissively describes it as a "waste for both sides,"as if no conflict is ever weighted in moral valence. But some are. I just feel hopeless when a conflict did not have to cost lives, as you suggest it might have been dispatched in negotiations. And I distinctly remember Reagan trying to stand under Thatcher's virtual ticker-tape war popularity, hoping some would make him look heroic (while he was illegally selling arms to the Contras. Nicaragua is another irony-laden story!).

A matter of principle. If Thatcher hadn't fought them this kind of encroachment would have continued increasingly so.

The Malvinas war orchestrated by the US whose goal was to sell new ships to the by that time obsolete UK navy. They did it the same year, a few months after the conflict ended. Needed a nice excuse provided the UK socio-economic depression, disastrous situation from the 73 oil crisis... The US totally controlled and directed any single move of both contenders, not only during the war but well before the Argentinian army stepped on the island... For instance, the previous year, 4 months before the conflict, the US gave order to the Argentinian regime to dismantel some dozens of exocet missiles...This would have disuaded anyone to approach unless suicidal... The US prevented the Argentinian regime to send sufficient men and equipment to the islands...Just a few contingents would do... The US also prevented Argentine to build an ad hoc airport and aerial base in the islands from which the air force would enjoy a definitive advantage...which would have in advance cancelled any attempt by the UK to regain the Malvinas...and made any navy approach just suicidal... The US prevented the use by Argentina of a scuadron of Mirage aircrafts made available by Peru...they were told to simply monitor the Patagonia skies, far from the scene was played... Argentinian government was forced by the US to stop while the trembling UK navy was just about to go back home mainly for logistics reasons, unable to stand 48 more hours as later declared by an UK navy officer there in command; and the neverending hell spit by the Argentinian air forces on the UK vessels... The Argentinian military's actions, like many other regimes in Hispanic America and beyond, were bound to commands issued by the US, who dictated what could be done, when and how...including preventing many governments from supporting Argentina...and Thatcher's B plan of NUKING Argentine. Facing this nuclear threat, the Pope Juan Pablo II, visited Buenos Aires by surprise right after his visit to Wales to calm the game down... Remember: virtually no Contemporary Era war without pirate US and/or UK behind...

@@fcsoldeu5338hey lad, the facts provided above are mere reproductions of well documented works and protagonists' statements (including British officials'). With some exceptions, like nuking plan B, do not expect to find them in anglosaxon materials, a.k.a. (typical) propaganda, which seems to be your source of misinfo. Do not blame yourself though: ignorance about anything is common to us all... However, since you have now more insights, you should just wonder about your own knowledge on the matter, instead of trying to contest them with nothing to offer in exchange apart from your nonsense tiktok trash-talk.
