Uzbeg (Özbeg) Khan (1282-1341), was the longest-reigning khan of the Golden Horde, which was originally a Mongol and later Turkicized khanate established in the 13th century and originating as the northwestern sector of the Mongol Empire. Öz Beg maintained one of the largest armies in the world, which exceeded 300,000 warriors and was enmeshed in the disputes and political life of eastern Europe, being a kingmaker in both Russia and Bulgaria, as well as a son-in-law of the Byzantine Emperor. Öz Beg was very tolerant of Christians as exemplified by a letter of thanks he received from Pope John XXII in which the Christian leader thanked Öz Beg for his kind treatment of Christians. He also permitted the establishment of Genoese trading colonies on the southern shores of the Crimean Peninsula.
