Today we're talking about excesses and deficiencies of hormones in menopause. Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone. Have you ever wondered how in the world you’re supposed to know which hormone is causing your menopausal symptoms? And even if you do know which hormone is the culprit, how are you supposed to know whether your symptoms are a result of too much or too little of that hormone? In this tutorial, I’ll give you lists of the symptoms you might experience if you have too much or too little of each hormone. You might just see yourself in one of those lists!

Wow this is an eye opener and I think it may also highlight just how little focus there is on "women's health issues" in the world. I've seen women begin struggling with anxiety and develop so called "anxiety disorders" during menopause and they are often treated with anti depressants. If the anxiety is symptomatic of a hormonal imbalance shouldn't there at least be a consideration to look at balancing hormones in some way to provide relief. Something beyond a thyroid check??? The fact that anxiety is attributable to menopausal symptoms was pretty surprising to me....seems like all anybody thinks of is hot flashes. I am learning so, so, much and I'm disappointed that as a women so much about menopause is a "surprise" to me. I think you are doing such a great service to women everywhere. Such that one day women will be as knowledgeable about what to expect about menopause as nearly all of them are with "what to expect during pregnancy" and more importantly they'll be able to make unbiased decisions about how they'd like to manage their menopause. Big cheers for you and the work you do! I'll be ordering your book and recommending it to friends!

You really get it, Camille. Thank you. Unfortunately, menopause is THE most neglected topic on earth, even though half of the world's population spends half of their lives in the state of menopause! I'm doing everything I can to change that. Keep watching, my dear. You will have the menopause you (and all women) deserve.

Well said Camille and I couldn’t agree more with the lack of preparation for this stage. We suddenly find ourselves in it and the rapid scrambling begins on trying to figure this out. The pursuit of knowledge is intense. We’re in a race against the clock because we had a late start. I’m getting there, but can’t believe how long I’ve left my symptoms untreated. To your point, I do not want to go down the anxiety path. I’m a super upbeat, encouraging person. I can see the precursors and signs of how it could happen and want to prevent that debilitating side effect. Goodness, this stage in life is something!

I am so thankful for these videos! Around the time I turned 40 (I am now 49) I went to see my gynecologist. I felt like I was going crazy. Anxiety, migraines that had been once a year had become monthly. Usually on the 19th day of my cycle and sometime during the first week of my period. Periods that were very heavy with large clots. I also had hair falling out and could not lose weight. I was convinced I was in perimenopause and he just acted like I read too much and did blood work for my hormones which came back normal of course. I ended up taking Celexa and have spent 9 years not feeling like me. I now think,after watching your video my progesterone was low. I am trying to watch all of these videos so I can be informed and go to a different gynecologist to discuss some hormone options for me. Also, I have 3 daughters, one in her first year of having a period, that also have menstrual migraines. I’m trying to figure out which hormones might be affecting them too. Thank you so much!

Wendy, Please, please, have a consultation with me BEFORE seeing any physician. I will arm you with all the information you need, help you weight you benefits and risks, and school you in how to navigate the medical system in order to get what you want. There are more pitfalls than you can possibly imagine. And, if you go to your doctor before having a consultation, you could burn your bridges without even knowing it. You do not need any labs before having a consultation with me. All you need to do for scheduling is go to MenopauseTaylor.ME.

Dr Taylor, this is a question about estrogen. what about if one is taking the maximum dose of estrogen and still having symptoms ,; could it be that the body isn't absorbing the estrogen well enough. Or what should we look out for in this case. Thank you for your effort

What do you mean by "maximum dosage of estrogen"? There is no "maximum." The problem is that someone is telling you there's a maximum when there isn't! Most women need to worry about getting enough estrogen, not about getting too much estrogen.

Have you got a video on Arthritis Chronic Pain and hormones? I read that women with Peri and Meno can have pain exacerbations with hormone declines? I am 46 and notice that if I take a small dose of DHEA, my arthritis and Fibro (?) pain goes away. It's very dramatic. When it wears off, I get a sort of 'stiff man syndrome' and bodily pains.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 6 жыл бұрын
Emma, You are so astute! I have not yet aired a video specifically on arthritis associated with menopause. But notice that it is one of the 22 symptoms of post-menopause (video 11). There's absolutely no doubt that estrogen functions as oil for your joints. Without it, they become painful and stiff. DHEA works because some of it gets converted to estrogen in your joints. Estrogen works even better than DHEA, though. I have chronic osteoarthritis. It's the ONLY reason I retired from practicing OB/GYN. I know a lot about this, and I'll definitely be giving you multiple videos on it. In fact, I'll giving you multiple videos on each and every symptom of menopause. The thing about KZbin is that you can only cover a little bit of information at a time. So, I have a syllabus of about 900 (yes, 900) video tutorials planned for you. Of course, it will take quite a long time to air them all. If you want all this information right away, I have 3 different ways for you to get it pronto. All of these resources cover all 900 video topics in different ways: (1) You can attend my two-day seminar on February 10 & 11 (2) You can buy the seminar on DVD (from MenopauseTaylor.ME) (3) You can buy my Menopause book (from MenopauseTaylor.ME) I'm trying to provide women with all the educational resources they could possibly need regardless of their timeline, learning style, or budget. For women already dealing with menopause issues, these videos are a bit slow. I'm here to help you any way I can.

Emma Chase since I stopped dairy my arthritis has diminished.... Not fully cured as its only 8 months but boy it's a hell of a lot better.. I was a vegetarian so I was quiet healthy !! But dairy is for baby cows not humans.. It's the biggest cause of arthritis etc and it's addictive For the baby cow to suckle . NO wonder I was hooked on cheese. 1 year later my fingers have gone back to normal no more swollen jones In my hands and no more pain.. I buy all the plant based milks I alternate then none stop.. It's far more interesting and safer!!!!! Get your Calcium through veg etc etc etc look into it..

Dear Dr. Barbie, Great tutorials! A lot of GYN don't talk about peri-menopause. I'll be 50 in February, still have periods regularly. My GYN only asks if I have them and do the examination. I have Hachimoto and Vitamin D deficiency, still don't use anything for hypothiroidism because the endocrinologist says so but I'm checking the level of thyroid hormones twice a year. For the last few years I had a weight gain, fatigue and joint pain (poliarthrosis) but I've managed to lose about 20 kilos for the last eight months and feel much better now. You've motivated me to go to the gym for the first time in my life (I've always loved to walk and swim). Thank you for everything. best regards Jelena, Serbia
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Jelena, It sounds like your staying on top of things. You probably have "Subclinical Hypothyroidism." That's where your TSH is rising, but all your other thyroid values are still normal. Some people stay like that forever or for a long time and do not meed medication. But keep getting your labs checked every 6 months. If you learn everything from me, you'll be able to work beautifully with your gynecologist. It's unfortunate that women aren't getting educated by physicians. It's primarily because you only get about 10 minutes at an office visit. Contrast that with the fact that my seminar is TWO DAYS! I guarantee that the education I give you is the most thorough and unbiased you 'll find anywhere. With it, you can work with any kind of healthcare provider you want. (You might know more than they do!) I'm very proud of you for resuming your fitness routine. That will help with everything!

I have only just discovered you, and in doing so, I have finally pulled my head out of the sand regarding my menopause (age 59). I'm a nurse and I should have better educated myself before. Although I now fear I have missed the boat. I'm about 5-7 years post menopausal, and all those years I ignorantly figured I was doing a favour to myself when I decided not go down the HRT path. Hopefully I can still do myself some justice...better late than never. You are a real gem, and I love your videos.

Welcome aboard to "Menopause Taylor University," Tonya. You'll find that if you start at the very first video (going by the number after each title), you'll understand absolutely everything. And you'll be shocked at what you didn't know, and delighted that you now do know. Each video builds on the last. It's just like school: You had to learn the alphabet before you could read. And nowadays, there are so many overwhelming misconceptions that women mistake as facts ... that you just don't know what you don't know. I respond to all comments here on KZbin daily. So, I will answer all your questions ... but I'll also know if you aren't watching the videos in order. (I'm like your mother. I have eyes in the back of my head!) And if you need me to help you tailor anything to your personal situation, you can schedule a one-on-one consultation at MenopauseTaylor.ME any time. You would be especially benefit day having a consultation to assess your benefits and risks of starting HRT now. Most women still have many more benefits than risks even 10 years into their window. I will help you assess yours.

Dr. Taylor I have got a really important question here .. does the menopause symptoms come in waves do they come and go in waves because I feel like I had it and then the strong symptoms went away and now I feel like I have it all over again and I guess I gauge it by the the hot flashes ...hot flashes go away then they come back and it’s been a while since I’ve had hot flashes but they’re back again so does this come in waves or does that depend on the person?

Early post menopause is the first 5 - 10 years. After 10 years, it's late post-menopause. This is important because the early post-menopause years are the most critical in increasing or decreasing your risk for the long-term diseases associated with how you manage your menopause: Heart attack, Osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's Disease.

Hi Dr. Barbie! I have a question. I had what I was told a "total hysterectomy" in Dec 2000, hip to hip incision and started on Estrodiol. I was watching a previous video and am wondering if it was a true TOTAL hysterectomy? ? I've tried getting my medical records, keep being told it was to long ago. records are gone after 10 years? ? I'm 55 now. I tried the Dr, the hospital, all to no avail. What do you think, seems like with type of incision and Estrodiol it maybe was a total hysterectomy? ? Or will I just never know?? Thanks!
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Sherry, The incision tells you nothing about the procedure. But the fact that you began taking Estradiol immediately after the procedure would imply that you had your ovaries removed. The correct name for that procure would be "Total Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus & cervix), Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy (removal of both fallopian tubes & both ovaries). I would bet that your doctors back then said "Total Hysterectomy" incorrectly, knowing that the general public misdefines that as removal of uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, & ovaries. At age 55 now, you can assume that you're post-menopausal. If you ever have a pelvic ultrasound or pelvic CT scan, you'll probably find out if your ovaries are still there.

@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
Jamie, Yes, I know quite a bit about PMS. And the very best thing for it is birth control pills, patches, or vaginal rings. Don't assume that all birth control is the same. If you had side effects with one brand, just go to (or call) your doctor, describe the side effects, and let him/her change your pill to a different one. The reason there are so many different birth control pills is because they have different kinds of progesterone in them and different ratios of hormones in them. By being specific about what didn't suit your needs, your doctor can easily switch you to a different pill that will not produce those same effects. It's really a pretty easy adjustment to make. All birth control pills will make your periods very, very light. Most women love that. If you prefer a patch or a vaginal ring instead of a pill, just say so.

I went to a dr today that I got from the NAMS website. She too, stated the old study and the risk of blood clots from HRT. She did give me Estradiol patch 0.025 and PROMETRIUM 100 MG oral tab progesterone. I'm 55 and still within the window. The side effects make me a little nervous to take them though but I filled the prescription. What are your thoughts on this combination? I still have my uterus.
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 6 жыл бұрын
Your dosage of estrogen is half the necessary dosage to prevent the diseases associated with menopause (heart attack, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's). But I do think it's good to start at this dosage. Your progesterone dosage is the proper dosage for the 0.05 mg patch. In other words, your progesterone dosage outweighs your estrogen dosage. This is not problematic. But you may have side effects that are due to progesterone, such as drowsiness, bloating, depression. I think you should see how you feel for about a month. Then you can decide if you want to increase your dosage of estrogen. Remember, the name of the game is trade-offs. Taking hormones increases your risk of blood clots a little bit. In the WHI studies in 2002, the actual numbers were as follows: Without HRT, 8 women out of 10,000 had blood clots. With HRT, 16 some out of 10,000 had blood clots. Of course all the public heard was that "There was a 100% increase in blood clots." Well, 16 instead of 8 IS a 100% increase. But, when you know the real numbers, you may not think it's that big a deal. The trade-off is that you alleviate all 22 symptoms of post-menopause AND you lower your risks for heart attack, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's. If you haven't watched videos 98, 99, and 100, do so. You'll get a good grasp on all this.

Dr. Barbie, can estrogen deficiency cause migraines just like progesterone deficiency? I see that migraines is listed only under progesterone deficiency in your chart. I'm 40 years old and I've been suffering from menstrual migraines since 32. I started taking 17 beta estradiol topical gel during the one week before my period and it helps prevent the onset of migraines. If I don't take it, the attacks come. So I'm wondering if the drop of estrogen right before my period can cause migraines.

@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 7 жыл бұрын
I really don't understand how your "painful bladder" or anti-inflamatories have anything to do with taking only vaginal cream or with stopping it. Is there a reason (medical or personal or preferential) that you never took estrogen replacement therapy? The first 5 - 10 years of menopause is the most critical time for preventing heart attack (the number one killer of women over 50), osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's Disease. You should read a book called, The Estrogen Window, by Mache Seibel, M.D. I think it might help you make a decision as to what to do. Whatever you do, don't just let time go by without making an active decision as to how you want to handle this. Time is of the essence for you.

So, not just hormone levels, but their ratios relative to each other also matter!!! Great!!!
@MenopauseTaylor
@MenopauseTaylor 4 жыл бұрын
Sort of. Actual hormone levels are not used to manage menopause. I just want you to understand what's happening with you start transitioning. No one video is the whole story, ever. What I do NOT want you to assume is that you need to use hormone levels to determine HRT dosages. Nor do I want you to assume that there is a fixed ratio of one hormone to another interns of dosage. If you want to learn what you need for success, schedule a consultation so that I can tailor it all specifically to YOU.

@@avidreader7545 I'm so glad my down-to-earth (and somewhat quirky) teaching style works for you, my dear. I have such fun making props and coming up with ideas for how to make sure you understand everything. It's pure joy for me.
