Every week I receive so many questions about whether it’s safe to take hormones after age 60, if it’s safe to start them more than 10 years after menopause, or when I have a family history of breast cancer, amongst others. Today I’ll be answering some of the most common questions regarding timing of hormone replacement and the science behind statements that we should stop them at a certain age, and similar recommendations that are still made by many physicians.
Also, don’t forget if you want an opportunity to meet with me in person and discuss your particular situation, and you’re not able to visit me in the office in Houston, please join me at our “Empowering Midlife Wellness” retreat May 5-8th at Miraval Austin! We were lied to. 76 with breast and thyroid cancer. Was told no help with symptoms. Started estradoil from urologist due to recurrent UTS happening monthly. GAME CHANGER! NOT ONE UTI IN A YEAR! Oncologist agreed even though I'm estrogen receptive breast cancer. This news will benefit so many women. My 50 yr. old daughter will have a better menopause and quality of life than I have.

The advantages are even more for me than you mention: If I take less my hair starts falling out, I cannot sleep, I get digestive issues, I become depressed or very emotional, anxious and get stress incontinence! It helps me physically emotionally and mentally in every way! Thank God for estrogen, I can recommend for every woman after 50. I am 76 now and will never stop taking them!

I went to a Gyno (a menopause specialist) a few days ago hoping for HRT for fatigue, moodiness, brain fog - and she told me NO because I'm 61. She also went ON and ON and ON about vaginal dryness because she said that i "MIGHT want to have sex when I'm SEVENTY ONE!" Oh she was HORRIBLE. She told me about the 2002 study, about "Bioidentical hormones" and all KINDS of shit that's already online, even after already telling me that I was too damn OLD because "plaque/arteries." I mean sure, I'm old, but I have NO other health issues, plus I exercise, eat right and am strong as a damn horse. I wouldn't even be ASKING for hormones if I had any other options.

I went through menopause at 51. I’m now 61 and will be 62 soon. HRT was never something discussed with me by my dr and even she had I probably just would have said “I want to do this naturally”. My biggest issue in the last 11 years is my sleep. It has steadily gotten worse and worse. I’m still very healthy but, it’s taking a toll on my body, I can feel it. I feel like I look a lot older in the last few years. I really feel like my lack of deep, restful sleep is the key to this feeling. My struggle has been finding a dr who will really consider putting me on HRT at my age. 😢

This is the first menopause/HRT info video I’ve watched and haven’t cried because I’ve been denied HRT for no other reason than that damn (not the word I’m actually thinking), flawed study. I work in the Medicine Residency at one of the largest programs/hospitals in Boston and recently, a few physicians there presented at DGIM rounds how HRT is so beneficial and should be the standard of care- to the shock and confusion of all the MDs on the zoom. I’m more than 10 years out-my periods stopped at 45, and much damage has been done, but hopefully, I can find someone here who will at least have the conversation with me…🙏🏼

Thank you so much for your opinion on your wisdom and research on HRT! I was using a transdermal patch for years after doing my own little bit of research after which I felt it would be in my best interest to take it. That was until a nurse practitioner asked me 'Doesnt it bother you taking Hrt for all these years?' I told her definitely not! But she insisted I should come off Hrt which I wasn't happy about. I was so annoyed at myself for letting her talk me out of it! 18 mts later I decided to go back and try to get my Hrt prescribed again, this time I made an appointment with the doctor, he was a newer doctor to this practice and younger. He had no problems with prescribing me my hrt patch again and I am delighted to be able to be taking it again! For a long time I've always been a great believer that women should be able to take a safe form of hrt if they are healthy enough to be able to do so! I am now 68 healthy, and really happy to be using my patch again!!

At 69 I started back on HRT last week. Never should have stopped. HRT actually reduces cancer risks & strengthens heart & bones. Women have been misled about hormones ! @Marilyn7733

Hi. When you said your started fluttering, was that when you were off HRT or after you started again? I’m asking because within months of being taken off HRT, I started having heart palpitations, tachycardia, anxiety, etc. I am 69 years old too. I had a full hysterectomy in 2001, was put on HRT in the hospital and took it until the dr took me off at age 65. I first attributed it to the pandemic but the started researching HRT. I suffered for over two years, symptoms have leveled out but I’m still concerned about heart and bone health (not to mention thinning care and dry skin ugh). Did you have addl symptoms off HRT? I don’t want to start my post-divorce life without HRT!!

Ladies, you have to seek out a doctor who specializes in this. Most doctors don’t. There weren’t many in my area that did. I think this is why so many doctors don’t know much about this.

I had to fight to get on HRT, my 38 yr old F PCP was so against it. When I asked her about it, she said you can if you want, tho must stop as soon as possible. Then, made an offhand remark about her F patients who have had strokes prior to seeing her. She said the patient will ask, “ do you think it was my HRT?” & her reply was “Duh, of course”. Still so much misinformation from physicians

Same here. Dr gave me warnings again and again and finally prescribed it but it's the pill form of estrogen. I'll have to call and change it to the patch. I don't have symptoms other than mild hot flashes or so I thought. I can't sleep and if I do , wake up 2, 3 times a night and my skin has been pretty good but in the last year or so, aged so much etc. I didn't think they're menopause related. Too late for certain things but I am hoping it doesn't get worse from here on out.

I think it can feel cheeky to challenge a health professional but if done with humility then I think it’s okay to say that you’re understanding is that this study is out of date / old hormones used etc as it would be important for this professional to be aware and check the facts out for themselves

BLESS YOU! I went through menopause at age 38 when Premarin was the only game in town. I tried it, but it made me sick; then I found out how it was made so refused it on ethical grounds. I'm 74 now and looking for relief from a litany of typical post-menopausal symptoms - dry skin, loss of muscle mass, weight gain, sleeplessness, etc. We have one menopause specialist in town, and I think it's time to book an appointment with him to try estrogen. I'll never know if I don't give it a go, right?

Hi Doc! After listening to you and so many other smart, well-informed women, I'd like to meet with my reluctant GYN to get on appropriate HRT. I'm 62, at least 10 years post menopause (no HRT as all docs scared), with a family history of heart issues (however I don't currently have any symptoms or diagnoses). I am now pre-diabetic, A1C just barely over 6. Can you point me to the best studies to bring to my appointment when my doc believes HRT is contra-indicated and will "elevate risk of stroke and/or heart disease."

For those of you whose docs say no, an ND will probably help you. My MD said no and told me to go to a functional medicine doctor. I'm 60. so I found a naturopathic doc, and she was up on this current info and prescribed me .05 estradiol patch 2x/wk, plus natural micronized progesterone, 100 mg each night (but I cut the progesterone troche in half many nights because progesterone causes me to be lethargic and irritable, so I self adjust and was told to be sure I take it at least 12 nights per month, to counteract endometrial lining buildup from the estradiol.) My insurance in Oregon covers the naturopathic doc and the medications, including the compounded progesterone troche (oral melts in mouth.) Question for the doctor here: would a transdermal micronized progesterone cream ever be preferable over oral? Thanks for this v reassuring content!

Thank you so much for this very valuable Bio-identical HRT information. I'm going to start this w/ a functional Dr./ program & although I trust them - it is a little intimidating for me as Ive had negative results ,& harsh side effects from the oral regular hormones. Which the conventional Dr.'s preescribed fir my osteoporosis (diagnosed at 31 yrs.). I'm going to try to get stronger finally now - 26 yrs. later at 57 yrs. young (hopefully it's not too late to gain some positive results?! Of course a healthy whole food diet w/ some weight bearing exercises should help either way. 🙏🙏💖😊

You’re right!, I was on HRT after surgical menopause! But at age 60 my doc retired and the two female doc I seen would not approve it again! Only vag estradiol. They quoted me the study you read! I since had a broken leg dry eyes muscle pains and vag symptoms and uti and dry eyes etc lots of problems from not asking Continue IOUs HRT. They also mention this breast cancer stuff and I say with a full hysterectomy all hormones were cut off!

Congratulations on your bone density gains, Dr Susan! I wonder if you could clarify something. I’ve heard conflicting information about whether estrogen replacement can actually help with increasing bone mineral density versus just preventing further bone loss. Is this a matter of dosage of the estradiol? My personal experience has been interesting. I have beginning osteoporosis and had been on the “standard” dose (0.05mg) estradiol patch for about three years. This brought my estradiol blood levels only to 25 and 30 pg/ml. (2 separate measurements). I also had mild to moderate hypercalciuria (3 separate 24-hr urine calcium tests over a 9 month period). My endocrinologist suggested thiazide diuretics for the hypercalciuria, which I was not comfortable with after doing some research. Instead, I asked my gynecologist for the next higher patch dose. (She’s great and had no objections). To my delight the following 24-hr urine calcium test showed no more hypercalciuria, and my estradiol level has increased to approximately 49 pg/ml. Might I be correct in assuming that the higher estradiol dose is better to maintain or perhaps even help increase my bone density going forward? My endocrinologist has not confirmed this and appeared to avoid going into explanations of this improvement of the hypercalciuria. I was wondering if you have more knowledge about this topic. Can an insufficient estradiol level be the cause of excess urine calcium levels? I would love to know! 😊 Thank you for your very helpful videos, Dr Susan! 🌸

I don’t think there’s any conflicting information in the scientific world about estrogen improving bone density, but it certainly needs to be the appropriate dose- so blood levels of 40 to 80 are adequate

I’m popping in to say don’t automatically rule out a male doctor. After trying 3 different female doctors and no one wanting to even discuss hormone therapy, I went to my current doc. He wasn’t thrilled about it (I’m 61 but menopause at 56). We talked about my risks, and I told him what I had learned in my research. I already have osteopenia despite many years of a job involving heavy lifting and that’s my biggest concern.

I am 66 and having an incredibly tough time getting anyone to prescribe; endocrinologist, obgyn, etc. I have severe anxiety that has gone into depression due to the severe anxiety... I finally went to a new ob/gyn, a woman and she reluctantly prescribed hrt. Now my insurance won't pay for it, so if I want it, it will cost me $300 a month. Money is tight, as I am divorced. I still think I would like to try it. I am really desperate.

I went through early menopause at age 43, so did one of my daughters. I have no history of heart disease or cancer on either side of my family. We do have a genetic history of migraines though. I took Premarin for about 25 into my late 60s but stopped because I had an increase of migraines. I was fine for a few years when I turned 72 I suddenly was all aches, pains, very dry skin, thinning hair, and sleep disturbances. Only one or two migraines per year though. I'm interested in the topical estrogen therapy. I'm wondering if it would trigger migraines as the Premarin eventually did. I'm really tired of all the aches, pains, loss of bone density (my DEXA scans were fine until a couple of years ago), and general fatigue and misery. I also would like to find a doctor in my area who is sensitive to this issue. I did have a gyn who had prescribed my meds who had twins in their 80s were still taking estrogen and were and in very good health. She has since retired though.

If it’s safe for four women over 60 to start taking hormone replacement therapy. Is it still applicable for those that are 79 to 80.? I have no history of heart disease, no cancers I don’t know her problems in my family history or do I. However, I do have four different autoimmune diseases, starting with celiac for many years , rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, PMR. Due to years of prison treatments I have now developed serious osteoporosis. My question, would HRT benefit me in any way as an aide in stopping some of the progression ? I also have stage 3 CKD brought on by years of Ibuprofen use. All of my vitals are normal and I hair complete blood panels drawn every three to four months.. Vaginal dryness is basically the reason for my interest .😮
