This last year, I stayed a firm supporter of the club, my 53rd year of doing so… but I also became a supporter of The Square Ball… I took away so much from that interview that I didn’t know. The biggest thing that comes across here is that Angus genuinely seems to care about the club, the fans and the team. He didn’t have to do this, could easily have done an official club podcast where he got softer questions, but this is as close to facing the fans directly as he could’ve gotten. Even if he doesn’t stay too long, and is simply remaining to help transition the 49ers into the club, I think he understands the mistakes, and the errors, and will try his hardest to atone for any he’s made himself.

He didn't try to hide from the mistakes made which led to relegation last season. In the context of if the club is relegated surely you have to account for the fact that in those circumstances the majority of players are unlikely to retain their transfer value because if they had performed at that level we wouldn’t have been relegated in the first place. In what possible scenario do we get relegated but the majority of the players have played well enough to still be valued at what we paid for them?

Astonishingly good interview. Kinnear was surprisingly frank and revealing, without actually throwing too many culprits under the bus, other than Sinisterra, though clearly he thought that Orta was given too much freedom and really screwed up with some of the transfers. It is interesting though, that apparently Marcelo Bielsa wanted Aaronson, who turned out to be one of the most disastrous transfers, though perhaps not as disastrous for the club as Marsch, Kristensen and Firpo. Also interesting that he was surprised that so many of the players whose transfer value declined over the season wanted out after relegation rather than stay and fight for promotion. Also interesting that he thinks that Sinisterra is still potentially worth more in the transfer market than what Leeds paid for him. My overall impression though was that the club is in competent hands and that a return to the premiership within 3 years is very possible.

I admire the leadership of attending this interview. However, thinking March’s first season was a success is delusional. The regression was clear for all to see. We stayed up in spite of Marsch, not because of Marsch. Keeping him was the key mistake.

It’s not delusional if you look at from the point of view of the target that season was for Marsh to keep us up. He was successful at that. He was still a rancid manager though who shouldn’t have been given the job of m the first place

completely agree. even his wins were lucky. Norwich 94th minute goal, Watford could have gone either way, Wolves away on that Friday night 2-0 down they go down to 10 men and thankfully collapsed, Brentford when we stayed up they went down to 9 men in that game. Man City battered 4-0, Chelsea came beat 3-0 us didnt have a shot on target, Aston Villa beat us 3-0 didnt have a shot on target. warning signs were there
@RobertMcVay-q2l Жыл бұрын
The key mistake was selecting him as the successor for Bielsa in the first place. The kind of player we had, that Bielsa liked were completely different from the type of player Marsch needed. Bringing him in as anything more than a short term project made no sense and Orta deserves the blame. By doing this Orta set the players, the club, and even Marsch himself up for failure. We had a team made up of half Marsch ball players and half Bielsa players. Which meant we couldn't carry out either style effectively.
@Donners329 Жыл бұрын

@@Donners329 I think you might be missing my point mate! The boards target for marsh in that last part of the season was to stay up, we stayed up so they will see it as successful. Respect to Kinnear for coming on and overall was as open and honest as he could be regarding everything and didn't shy away from owning the mistakes. It's very easy and cynical as fans to question the loan release clause but ultimately the long term safety, under the previous owner would have been in jeopardy, which none of us want. I do think too much power was given to Orta post bielsa which hopefully has been rectified now with the new structure. Overall I think Angus has sincerity and dignity and does want us to succeed, yes he has made mistakes but he is the only one who's here to try make amends so let's see where we are in 12-18 months.

When the Leeds board sacked Bielsa all the questions were all wrong. Results had been awful and fans were asking why is Bielsa doing this and that? Bielsa hadn't changed, but the board hadn't listened to him and acted on his advice. It is quite obvious now that the problem was the board, the owners and directors and not Bielsa. The board acted shamelessly in sacking him when they were entirely at fault. Hang your head Angus, you were there on the board. Et tu, Brute?

Was it not just an issue of money? Bielsa made it clear he had a 2 year plan (which he delivered perfectly) but the club would then need to provide the huge cash injection to overhaul the team with 50 mill plus players to stay in the premier league. Radrizani never had the wealth necessary to make this happen. It was never an option and therefore the outcome (failure to maintain premier league status) was inevitable. Had it been the 49ers who owned the club at that time things could have been different.
@ianelliott549 Жыл бұрын
You say the board didn't listen to him and act on his advice.... his advice was to buy a new team. I've never heard such autistic advice as that in my life. You cannot buy a new team at any time, much less in your second year as a premier league team. If the 49ers had taken full control in the summer of 2021 then maybe they could have spent and bought enough good players to keep us going under biesla. But for him to suggest buying a new team to his owner when he knows his owner hasn't got much money and we've not long come out of the championship. Is plain special needs 🤷♂️🤷♂️

I agree with him. One toxic fan against a player, creates two toxic fans, against two players. The toxic fans grow, they target players and it damages the squad. The toxic fans are a disgrace, its became a social media problem that other clubs fuel also.

Fantastic interview and I'm proud of Angus. Tough job but faces it head on. I think he's spot on in terms of supporting professional footballers that want to be at the club, irrespective of form. Support features on both sides.

Bielsa wanted to replace the whole squad...what a fucking legend. We should have gone as big to replace the key areas as possible for him. It was disgusting that we went into the season with Cooper still at the back...klich...mckinstry on the bench. Bielsa should have walked tbh. Instead we did next to nothing then didn't back him in January.
@Cranndaddy Жыл бұрын
might not be the most relevant place for me to say this but just on trusting Bielsa - the lack of ambition from us by not signing Ben White in that first season was the first step to failure for me. Dan James, Rodrigo, Rutter etc massively overspending but we got priced out of signing the heart of our defence in that system. I’m probably deluded but felt that we could be a top 6 team now if we’d have signed him and brought our youngsters in 😂😂
@bluecheese20401 Жыл бұрын
@@Cranndaddy I think you're spot on. A defence built around Ben White or indeed a competent and fit defender (not Koch...llorente etc.) We could have been doing amazing things. We got 1 good value player im gnonto and that was only cause we couldn't get someone else. We've had a truly terrible hit rate if players. Shameful

@@CranndaddyRadz did not have the wealth to invest. That is clear from what Angus said. Alas, Radz should have sold after the 9th place finish and the 49ers could have backed Bielsa.

Angus you have got it very wrong if you think the recruitment for Bielsa was good. The whole responsibility for the success of those players rested with Marcello himself. The guy was a magician. That team was a mid table Championship side that he made perform at 200% of their real capacity. Nothing to do with player recruitment at all, and what's worse is, you let him go.
@EnglishMike Жыл бұрын
Watch the interview again. The recruitment was good enough to get us to 9th in the Premier League, then Bielsa wanted a new squad of players the club couldn't afford. Nothing would have been good enough for him at that point because Radrizzani didn't have enough money to pay for them. The (understandable) mistake was to persevere with Bielsa for another season knowing that they didn't give him what he wanted at that point. The hope was the squad would come through, but it didn't.
@JamieLowe-xp1le Жыл бұрын
@@EnglishMikethe mistake was radz should have sold up when we finished 9th and let’s also add to the context the year we finished 9th there was no fans that definitely played a part for me.
@EnglishMike Жыл бұрын
@@JamieLowe-xp1le Sure, but you have to admit that it would have been a really tough decision for any owner invested in the club to make. Radz isn't a faceless corporation only concerned about how much profit he could make from the sale. He was riding high from three great years of progress and Leeds' form at the end of the season (after the fans were back) was the best it had been all season. Nobody was sounding the alarm back then. It's only with hindsight people are saying he should have sold, just like I know now that I shouldn't have sold my 100 shares of Apple stock I owned 30 years ago.... _sigh_

I think the part about Bielsa wanting a complete squad overhaul of 40/50 million pound players feels quite hyperbolic unless it was in the context of ‘how do you think we kick on and get into Europe next year Marcelo?’ The man is a football purist but he’s not got his head in the clouds, he’d have known that was never a realistic request. I also doubt he’d have wanted a complete squad overhaul, I can’t imagine a scenario after the 2020/21 season where he wanted to replace any of Meslier, Raphinha, Phillips, Harrison, Rodrigo, possibly even Bamford, Koch and Dallas after the seasons they had. We also know he’s not a man who historically sticks around when things aren’t being run his way, so if he asked for let’s say £150/300 million worth of investment for a full squad overhaul and what he got was Dan James and Junior Firpo I think he’d have walked before the 2021/22 season even began, his stock was never hire he could have walked into most jobs he’d have wanted anywhere.

Recall report Marcelo actually stated he had extracted from & the boys had given their collective maximum no? Extrapolation - full squad overhaul when viewed from Angus position?
@harveyholmes9533 Жыл бұрын
@@christopherwilkinson893 I understand if he thought most of the guys who’d been there from the beginning would be burnt out and they needed overhauling (and he was right) but he wouldn’t have been looking to replace the players who’d signed in the first year of the premier league. I think he likely would have wanted 4 or 5 players to replace the likes of Klich, Ayling, Cooper, Alioski, gradually which is far less unreasonable.
@tellyhalkias4653 Жыл бұрын
@@harveyholmes9533 What I think is you are doing what most fans do---speculate on things we know nothing about since we were not in the room to hear anything. Angus' interview clearly shows how little fans do know about inside working and complexities, of these massive clubs like ours, The fact is, you, me everyone just pin idealistic traits on Bielsa because we love him so much, and inferring one thing from unrelated other things is not a valid way of looking at what he requested of Radz. What is more likely is the truth is somewhere in the middle, and lost in translation. Bielsa had been publicly on nrecord several times in his career saying his methods only worked for so long, and LUFC was a totally new experience for him to be at one place for so long, so even he had no clue how to deal with what ended up happening to him the season he was sacked.
