People asking why a reunion will never happen are ignoring the obvious. For starters we know from Daniel Stern's epilogue in the series finale what happens to each of the characters as adults. Second, (and most important) the original series took place during a very turbulent and volitile period in American history, the last few years of the 60s and early 70s and was about a very specific time in Kevin Arnold's life, his adolescence. The title of the series perfectly encapsulates the whole essence of the show, "the wonder years" of youth. The original series ended beautifully and a reunion would just be jarring and totally unnecessary.

If they did a show, showing them age 25 years, it would put it being around 1998 considering the last episode supposedly took place in 1973. In real life i graduated HS in 1975, taught HS from 1980 -2013. I know what most HS students experience from the 1970s through 2013. A follow up in 1998 would put it at what educators refer to as still "BG" or before Google. Yes it came out in 1998 but smart phones had just started, Facebook didn't start until 2004. The point is yes, 1998 is different than 1973 but the radical changes of the impact of social media and instantaneous information was mainly still to come a few years later, what we refer to as "AG" or after Google. If they distorted the storyline, made it 2008 instead of 1998, more contrast in the two eras would show up (Wonder years vs WTF years lol) but then again the ages of Arnold and Winnie would be 10 years off.

I personally think a one off show would work. Have it take place in 94 , Kevin would be 38. A 20 year class reunion, though cliched, would be appropriate. Feel Kevin would be in a malaise at nearing 40 , he is more vocal than jack though about being in a dead end job. I think Kevin would have a good marriage and of course he’s a great dad. But then he hears that Winnie cooper will be attending the anniversary get together and it sends him into an emotional tizzy as Winnie was his first love and his first heartbreak. Of course you’d have the obligatory nostalgia trip with characters returning and such but I think the crux of this one shot show is a resolution with Kevin, with him and Winnie talking and laying bare feelings and the unsaid unresolved issues they had. There is a conflict within Kevin as to whether he will give up a wife that loves him and let down a son that looks up to him. In the end he realizes he was looking at “the wonder years” through rose tinted glasses and that Winnie was not very good for him. He realizes that the past is passed and with the weight off his shoulders he goes on to better himself. I don’t think it would be bittersweet at all that Winnie and Kevin not end up together.
