Citroen UK very kindly invited me to their head office to test drive one of their brand new UK spec Citroen Ami press cars that have just arrived - can I answer some of your big questions about what Ami in the UK is going to look like?
I've never seen, sat in or driven an Ami before, will I still want to buy one after this?!
I also get let loose on the mean streets of Coventry in the very car that ‪@AutoalexCars‬ and ‪@CarThrottle‬ parked in a trolley bay at Asda! 😳

I saw one at the British Motor Show yesterday (21/08/22). It really made me smile and reminded me of when I chose a Fiat Panda over a 2CV 41 years ago! Then I sat in the Ami (as a 1.9m 100kg male) and thought “how spacious and comfortable”. Sadly the 28mph speed limit is a deal breaker for me. I’ve ridden motorbikes for a lifetime and UK “mumsie” drivers have an intent to squash any slow moving vehicle and in their rush to deliver Johnnie or/and Jemina to school/ballet/rugby/football/grannies destinations. 50mph (90 kph) limited top speed, some form of air conditioning (demist) facility and I’d be in like a shot. It has everything you need but without those two essentials - think UK 30mph in town speed limit and the onset of Global Warming - I will just watch and smile.

You go for it. Seriously considered one but ended up getting a Twizy instead. From my experience going up to say 20 miles round trip we always take the Twizy and that covers about 75% of journeys. Dropping top speed down from the Twizys 50mph to 28mph I reckon the Ami for us would still be good for 50% of all sub 20 mile trips, which is still good. We went with 2 inch foam inside cushion covers for the seats which are similar to the Ami. Makes the world of difference. Enjoy your Ami when it comes, anything that makes boring drives fun is a good thing.

@@grrfy Fair point as I would only feel comfortable taking a 28mph vehicle where speed limits are no more than 40 mph, although I think the Ami's top speed is restricted and the electric motor's torque would carry it up hills OK. Two things I’m interested to know about the uk ami’s relate to the European spec ones. They were updated in 2021 and early ones were recalled to have it retro fitted. Two faults were identified under warranty. 1. Leaky roof issues 2. Door locks sticking from being clogged with dirt. The second one was caused by the area inside of the wings being completely open and unshielded. They sealed the roofs and retro fitted inner wheel arch spats. Hopefully the uk models have this upgrade

I have no problems with the Type 2 Adaptor but if people research there is a small business in the UK that does tough leads and they make a compatible Ami extension lead with or without a built -in RCD that has a female 2 pin plug one end and UK plug on the other for home charging. Personal choice I suppose if people want to do it the French way or use the Type 2. Cannot understand why the anti people are so vocal no one is asking them to buy one.

Great little review and fun to watch, too. You're absolutely enthusiastic about what my mom would call a "Chausseewanze" - especially with a shape like this. Nice that Citroen showed some love and added some lovely little details here and there and except for the power it has really something from the 2CV. The spoiler might well be a lifting hook for stacked parking :-) Spacious inside...that's what the original Mini concept is: just tack the wheels in the very corners of the car, have a small electro motor and battery and there you go! It seems to have some of the Twizy virtues, hopefully without the vices. Access is easier for the second person and hopefully not that much draft inside. You can flip over a Twizy easily at sharp corners or entering a roundabout too fast. Maybe something unaware car drivers pampered by ALB and ESP should think about. You camera is not mirrored I suppose so Citroen did not bother a RHD for the UK? Socket: i can bring my hair dryer from the continent and plug it into a UK adapter...something that should work with the Ami, too. Or is it drawing too much current? I'd be surprised if it is more than 10A. Last but not least - shirt review: surprisingly quiet colour today, almost autumn like. :-)
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's LHD even here in the UK - it's so small you barely notice though! The charging thing is more about compliance with EV charging regulations - I suspect many people will end up using some kind of EU to UK adaptor even if they shouldn't.... but the official line is Type 2 is how it should be charged.
@MacBaerFFM
@MacBaerFFM 2 жыл бұрын
@@ModernHeroes Type2 adapter is definitely a plus over the Twizy, where you are left on your own devices and use a 3rd party or DIY Type2 adapter. And CPO often forbid using them. I remember when I ran out at 0% SoC going uphills and barely reached the gas station where I had to beg for electricity (the vacuums were plugged using Schuko sockets). If that Ami was designed to run 80 or 90 km per hour...like the Microlino (which is outrageously expensive imho)..so it comes with no A/C and probably no heating either? Hmm...

You can buy a EU two pin female to three pin male adapter on eBay/Amazon for around £5 The ami draws 1800w of power when charging, my mrs hair dryer is 1850-2400w depending on heat setting so should be perfectly safe on a household 3 pin socket, I’ve already fitted an outdoor weatherproof socket at the front of the house which is multi region

Mostly the quadracycle gets good reviews but the one deal killer for me is all that lovely glass which you cant see out of when it rains. The AMI has a very poor demisting facility for the windscreen and non existent for the side and rear windows. Better find a good anti mist spray and use it every day or get used to driving through frosted glass! Fix that and I would buy one as a second family car.

It's inconceivable that they manufactured this vehicle as a front-drive, when the driving position is placed nearly above the rear axle. Because, in that case, the weight distribution nclines mos of the weight to the rear, how is the driver supposed to get traction on wet or icey road surfaces? Rear-drive vehicles also have smaller turning circles, simply because of the absence of front-mounted half axles in them

The Ami is limited to 28mph to allow it to qualify as a quadricycle (whatever one of those is) in France but it's a shame they can't allow it to go a little faster over here in the UK where there's no such requirement. A larger battery would also be nice especially at the new higher price. They are gorgeous though, I've seen a few in France but haven't driven one yet.

28 mph is the killer for me. Surely they could extend it to 40 mph? I believe the Renault Twizy allows upto 50 mph and that's a quadricycle, so why can't they change the Ami? Also not keen on the Euro plug needing a converter as won't that overheat?
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes Жыл бұрын
It’s a light quadricycle rather than a heavy quadricycle (two versions of the Twizy are sold in France - the light version limited to 45km/h was never sold here). Not sure why the adaptor would overheat - seems like a fairly decent quality item and the plug is located securely etc.

I don't see a problem in a 40 zone - bikes are OK and slower than 28 mph. I don't understand the issue of charging though - can it be charged at home from a 3 pin - you seemed to imply this was dangerous / insurance wouldn't cover it?
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes Жыл бұрын
Officially, it's to be charged via a Type 2 wall box. In reality I'm sure lots of people will buy an EU to UK adaptor and charge it that way - you'd want to make sure it's good quality though.

@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's ever actually been 6000 EUR though - it's currently 7790 EUR in France. There's a government subsidy of 900 EUR that brings it a bit closer but it's hardly fair to compare government handouts between countries. Another important point is that the original round of reviews was made when there was no clear intention to bring Ami to the UK.

I was about to order one purely as a bobbing about in vehicle..I decided to look into insurance but because it’s so new very few companies are quoting for it so I phoned Citroen insurance explained I had over 40 years driving experience but it would be a new policy with zero no claims, no accidents and less than 3000 annual miles….the quote from Citroen over £600!….In addition to this the dealerships with the vehicle that I visited had little knowledge of the vehicle and it’s characteristics! My full NCB is on my Honda e so, as in your case, I’ve zero NCB to use for the Ami. I placed my order in June and was advised at the time of a September delivery. The disappointment for me is that it can't be charged via 13A UK plug. Our European neighbours can plug directly into their domestic supply. A reviewer in France stated, I can ask anyone in any street to help me charge it if I need, and offer to pay for their assistance. No matter how good the visibility. I personally would want to see as much of the road ahead as possible by sitting on the right.
