What’s perhaps the most unfortunate for Jamie here is that the plan was if he didn’t think he had enough fuel, he was to give the position to Lowndes. Lowndes pit lane penalty put him out of the race, so Jamie was left on his own, with the order for Chaz to basically push until Jamie ran dry

I still don't understand why he didn't back off earlier than he did. If you go back and watch the last few laps of the race (the full race is on this channel) he was doing near lap record pace and still had a few second gap to Mostert. If he'd started conserving and bled 2 or 3 seconds of gap to Mostert in those laps it seems almost certain he'd've made it home on fuel; his pace only really started to fall at Forrest's Elbow, after all. The team were begging him to back it off, so obviously they shared this view. The only person who didn't accept the reality was Whincup himself.

You didn’t lose the race. You didn’t have the fuel to push hard enough. You put up a hell of a fight. You are the reason that race is now regarded as one of the greatest races of all time and you should stand proud of the Herculean effort you put in to come from almost last and a lap down to be leading the field by 3 seconds on the second to last lap.

If he tried to save fuel he would’ve been over taken there wasn’t much he could do apart from keep the foot down and hope for a miracle and he got pretty close

Had they pitted the result would have been worse. He had to take a punt and it almost worked

He had a 3+ second lead with about 3-4 laps left. Could've easily coasted a lap to save fuel and won. But as a Ford supporter am very happy with how the race turned out.

@@reece1718 3 seconds was nowhere near enough to be able to save fuel. He was driving as fast as he could and Chaz was still on him, if he was saving there is no way he doesn't get passed.

@@robbo_ Disagree. He ran out of fuel coming out of forrest elbow on the last lap. He was punching out fastest laps of the race in the dying laps. Could've easily backed off here and there for 3/4 of a lap to ensure he could still keep a decent pace and win.

Honestly I can't blame him he took a massive gamble that did not pay off but he was going to lose the lead anyway. He rolled the dice and still managed to come home I think 5th around the spot he would have been if they went for a splash and dash of fuel.

Out of that leading bunch only one car had the ability to fight at full pressure was the lowndes car and when frosty had the slow exit from hell corner that put an end to that
