Fall is prime time for great whites to roam off the coast of San Francisco. While they’ve been documented inside the bay in the past using electronic monitoring, none have been spotted inside the Golden Gate, let alone seen stalking and attacking prey.
Some say this was the first known recorded predation event in the San Francisco Bay.
On Saturday, October 10, 2015, witnesses from Alcatraz and the Alcatraz Cruises hybrid ferry watched in awe as a great white shark devoured a sea lion just a few yards off Alcatraz Island. This is the first attack by a great white shark ever recorded in San Francisco Bay.
The bloody spectacle is proof that one of the most feared oceanic beasts sometimes takes feeding forays into bay. Some believe that this year’s robust El Niño is driving sharks northward into uncharted territory.
The attack was recorded in great detail by the cameras aboard Alcatraz Cruises’ hybrid vessel and from Alcatraz Island.

New Yorker here who has been living in San Francisco for 4 years now, and every single time I look at the SF Bay, I cannot help but think of Great White Sharks. It is so surreal that something so exotic as the Great White Shark.. is swimming under the Golden Gate Bridge. Still crazy for me to think about sometimes lol..... weirdddd

Been here my whole life and wondered if the bay had whites.once the seals came in the bay and chose the slips and docks around fisherman's wharf to call a rests stop really had me wondering.we both know there in the bay via the Golden gate hunting.think il get a grant and study them by a cutout seal and dragging it around just to see wtf happens.imagine the footage of a white hitting cutout seal with alcatraz in backround.under the Golden gate they swim hunting for seals.a few years ago a party boat hooked a white off alcatraz for more confirmation there hunting.cut outs worked at the farrolones let's give it a go.that would be badass and fun.

When I lived in SF I did the same!!! I'm upset at myself that I didn't research Sharks more while I lived there. SF also has some of the biggest White sharks because the population isn't as big as say Australia or South Africa so they have a bigger diet and they get huge!! Plus there isn't as many Tiger or Bull sharks in the California waters so they have less conpetition

There are a LOT of surfers off of California coasts. Sitting on their board with their feet hanging in the water, or paddling out, splashing the water on their boards, surfers look a LOT like the pinnipeds that sharks prefer to eat, i.e., seals and sea-lions.

There have been fatal attacks in the Red Triangle (Bodega Bay in the north to Big Sur in the south coast of California) and one of the reasons for attacks north of California is because they used to dive north of San Francisco, for abalone and sea urchins (for their roe-eggs) and when you pry them off the sea floor, it releases odors into the water that are like dinner-bells to sharks! Divers would have a sack full of urchins and get attacked. Abalone have been scarce now for decades, few are left now, but there are still plenty of purple sea urchins. Another reason is that there are pinnipeds in those areas (sea lions and seals and elephant-seals further south) and that's a favorite prey of sharks, especially the Great White Shark! Another separate reason, dead whales have washed up on the shores in that area (called a whale fall) and instead of towing it back out to deep water in the ocean, they bury it right on shore! As it decomposes, the oils and fluids seep into the sand and the rains come and wash that out to sea. That WILL draw sharks as dead whales are one of their favorite ways to feed!

Last week I did the Alcatraz swim. I must admit that I also was worried a bit about this as well, because KZbin had to show me this video a couple of days before my swim. lol. I've swam with sharks before, even a 13ft Tiger shark, but the view in that water was clear, SF bay is not. However, the second you jump into the water you realize, that sharks are your least concern and you focus on your swim 😄 The only wildlife I was worried about were those sea lions even most of them are cute. Looking back it was a very rewarding thing to do. So don't let the video scare you.

@@swegotech8466 I tip my hat to you, Sir! Swimming with Sharks or in sharkinfected waters is a horrorvision to me, but I know it is possible. The Tigershark must have been a majestic sight to see. I'm not that brave, so I will not do the Alcatraz. Can Sealions be a aggressive?
@swegotech8466
@swegotech8466 Жыл бұрын
@@vanPoll yes watching the Tigershark was really an amazing expierence (I've that video on my KZbin if you want to see this). Yes some people go bitten by sealions in the SF bay. Even when there was one really close to my swim I don't really know how they react. I think most of them are not attacking you and they are more playful. But I have seen videos where people got in trouble with sea lions. So this was more my worries than the very very low chance of a shark attack.

And when I went to Alcatraz they said thier are no sharks in those waters, what a bunch of liars. Those tour people lied about alot of things.

There’s actually 11 different species of shark In the bay but none of them are harmful to humans, great whites aren’t even supposed to be there but as shown in the video occasionally they are found
