Have you ever been overlooked for a promotion? After watching this video (and thinking back to that time) did you miss any of these signs you won't get promoted?

My boss would ask my opinion all the time in private, then when we were in high level meetings, he would use my exact words as his own.

This video broke my heart. I hit about 3-4 of these issues. My immediate boss said I’m an excellent employee but it’s “who you know” and our key leaders are ultra authoritative. They have been promoting each other for years. I tried to stand out, support others and solve issues for 5 years. Alas. 3rd interview for new role outside the company next week.

I feel your pain and been there myself. In the end you can do all those things, but the final outcome is well out of your control.I learned long ago that you can even know the right people, but still go nowhere if they are not willing to help you. I see you wrote this comment some time ago, so hope that 3rd interview worked out for you and that you finally got the position you deserved! Best wishes to you.😉👍

Two years at entry level in my current company and I was put on higher duties for a while. After I spoke up about issues with a new computer system with higher management, things changed for the worst. The signs I noticed: 1) Taken off higher duties or your tasks are being delegated to others without any explanation or feedback. 2) Applying for higher positions internally and being told you interview well and have relevant experience, but aren't what they are looking for. When you ask for further details, they don't give any. 3) A sudden change in behaviour from your management (less friendly and caring than before). The tips in this video are great but only for those with a relatively fresh canvas. If you've already made the mistakes, you need to find another company and move on.

@@mba2ceo💯% bingo! I once had a much older and wiser coworker that would tell the younger guys "shut your mouth and do your job, cause you're not going to make any changes.They don't want our ideas, there's no suggestion box here."😂 Of course this is not one size fits all advice, but it is one size fits most. In the end, if your boss personally likes you , you'll get promoted without trying very hard at all.

Hi Kara, I am a regular follower and endorser of your videos to my colleagues. I find every points articulated in your powerful videos thought provoking. Grateful. Takeaways from this magnificent skill video: 1. Reach to colleagues and make them feel that you count them in your second home i.e. work place. 2. Never cease from putting forward your opinion especially in meetings, where you are expected to do so. 3. To be counted as a brain to call upon, improve your connection with the high level people. 4. Be a compass at the time of confusion in work place. Keep recalibrating the compass to show the right direction consistently.

These signs helped me in the opposite direction. I’m up for promotion and I’m super anxious I won’t get it, but I am visible, people always ask for my opinions and help on things. I am not involved in high up meetings yet, but my workplace is non-traditional working from home. They use group chats to discuss issues relevant to training leadership and I’m in those groups. I’ve also been given more higher level work the last few months, and they continue to add more tasks. multiple team members have been advocating for me and talking to leadership about how they support me being promoted. I love my coworkers and care so much about helping them feel welcome and supported every time I get a chance to take the lead. My work is so rewarding and I’m really passionate about it. It does feel like I’m an obvious choice but at the same time I still have this sense of doom that for some reason I won’t be chosen for promotion. Do you have any tips on workplace anxiety/that feeling that it’s too good to be true.
@kararonin

To me, it sounds like you've positioned yourself perfectly for a promotion. You're doing all the right things and you have the support of your coworkers behind you. I think what you're feeling is self-doubt - not believing that you'll actually get a promotion or be able to do the job. This is completely normal when we're facing a new stage in our career. I do have a video on "How to be confident when you lack confidence in your capability" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZOqaGVvrK1mrLM. I think this one will talk to you. Keep doing what you're doing and believe in yourself!

As a men, I try to keep away from getting work advice from women. Not because I’m sexist (I am a bit) but because I’m currently involved with a project that has a lot of upper management run by women. I did run into issues that defy logic and reason and I’ve lost the desire to advance. Your video however is very good and you brought up great points. Especially number one. I’ve always told people “be very good at something, you’re stuck while funny idiots will become your boss and ruin all your great work.

I think it's becoming difficult for many people to navigate the workplace. There are many differences across the board between professionals and these differences can be hard to manage. Try not to lose your desire to advance. Stay focused on generating results. Because in a good team, any manager/leader will be happy when you produce good results for them. It makes them look good.

I always seek for answers why my co-workers and Team Leader always push me for promotion, now I know the answers. I always do the opposite. I now know how to stop that as I do not want any promotion, it is making me frustrated when others push me to do do what I do not want. I know this is called promotion anxiety but dang! , thank you for you giving me the brightest idea. Love lots. :) ( I have a medical condition that is much more important than the promotion )

@jaaguitar 9 ай бұрын
"Tech knowledge" is important, or after the meeting the tech people will be laughing about you saying something stupid. Watch at least enough videos to be able to ask sensible questions. The soft skills people would advise you to always talk in meetings, but that may not be helping you.

And sadly that should be the opposite. You can talk a good game, but if you mess up at your job.. it makes things unbearable for those around you.

I consider the first one a self inflicted would. The second one can be too. I categorize most of this as "punch the clock" mentality. They either feel like if they just come in and punch the clock enough they'll get ahead, or they feel like they shouldn't have to do anything more than their job to get ahead. These are the same time of people when you tell them "hard work alone won't move you up" all they hear is don't work hard. The idea of getting up from their desk or building "relationships" doesn't occur to them. They think people who go to the company picnic are doing too much. They consider volunteering for those bigger projects instead of just waiting on them or not doing them at all brown nosing. Asking for an evaluation of your performance is overdoing it some how. A lot of people want to do the minimum and get the maximum. It could be something as simple as speaking to people on your way to work or congratulating someone above you for something they wee recognized for or a team accomplishment. Make yourself known and seen for good reasons.

Well everything you're saying maybe correct but it's not working for me. I'm very vocal and I always have expressed an interest in learning different aspects of a job so I could move up. I wind up being the kid that gets picked last because nobody else wants them on their team kind of situation. I have skills and I have natural talent. I'm very outgoing and I'm constantly mistaken for being in a position of leadership because that's just how I naturally carry myself. All of my family are alpha leaders. Is just a part of our DNA. But still not getting the promotions that I should be getting for the amount of energy that I put into every position I seek out. Yet the position always seemed to go to somebody else. So either I'm not quite what they had in mind or there's some kind of favoritism or nepotism going on and that's what the real story is. Scratching my head on this one.

Watched the video, thanks, but if you are very smart in your job, and your colleagues are downright jealous and they are long termers, whilst you are the newbie who learned fast to do the role, then the Management will always side with the long termers and their dictatorship, because they are too scared to argue with them. Just my experience. Love from Scotland, ❤ X ...

When you invest years of your life to this goal and then you get rejected it's nearly as devastating as getting fired! Be careful though some organizations will not promote you just see how you react. You really are playing survivor at work and I bet you never EVER knew it.

How to deal with unwelcome behavior in a new company by a group of existing people, just because you as a person are good with personality, knowledge and leadership skills?... If such team leaders have very close bonding with your manager... Because what I have seen once is that such team leaders are envious of you, they can't tolerate your popularity and your manager somewhat lets you get dominated by them...

If my job is desk job, how can i vesible in office???
@Volkbrecht
@Volkbrecht 11 ай бұрын
It might not be possible. Assess your situation. What is it that you do? Does your job even given you chances to do better than required? Or is all you can do more of the same work that others do? How are you managed? Are there even problems to take care of, or is your direct supervisor pretty much on top of his/her job? My guess: just you asking the question is a sign that there isn't a clear way ahead at your current job. So either you lack the skills and/or experience to even recognise the path forward, or the place is managed so smoothly that the company doesn't need to rely on underlings to pick up any slack, which means they don't need you to do any better than you currently are. Either way, if personal advancement is your goal, it's not likely to happen at your current job. The normal strategy in such a situation is to gather 2-3 years of experience, then look for a job that offers to give you at least a few new skills, but ideally you should aim for something that already comes with a bit more responsibility.
