Japan once went for nearly 400 years without an official state execution -- the longest consecutive period of any nation in history. Even in the modern ages, prisoners spend decades on death row, and as of late, more of them die of old age than from the gallows.

Yes. It's from the movie "Monster's Ball". The electric chair is the actual electric chair and execution chamber used by the State of Louisiana. Nicknamed "Gruesome Gertie", the chair was used in 87 executions from 11 September 1941 - 22 July 1991.

Blindfolds are not so the condemned can't see but so the executioner doesn't have to look. If you can't look at the condemned man in eyes as you execute him then you are a moral coward. If you advocate for capital punishment then it is more of a statement on you than the condemned.

I watched the film Ernst (?) Hagedorn, not the last execution in the GDR but I think it shows how it was done after 1966...he was put in a kind of straightjacket so he knew it wasn't to see anyone else, but in the room in Leipzig where there had been a guillotine til 1966, the condemned were expecting the executioner to come from the alcove on the left, instead he was behind the door and shot them before they had time to know what was going on.

@rainbowandlove The movie was called Let Him Have it. Christopher Eccleston played a chap called Derek Bentley, wrongly convicted for the murder of a policeman in 1955. His accomplice Christopher Craig shot the policeman, but at only 16 years old was also convinced of murder and jailed. Whilst at 19 years of age, Derek Bentley who had the mental age of an 8 year old was convicted and hung. He was believed to have been hung because he shouted the words Let Him Have It Chris. Nobody knows if he meant give him the policeman the gun or shoot him, and Derek, because of his mental capacity couldn’t understand, what they meant. So he confessed.
